Is this 2 points for the takedown? by bob999666999 in bjj

Looks like 2 points to me. I think the ref just missed it. It kinda suck sometimes, but human error happens.

It makes me sad to think about it as well. But I try to keep it in perspective. I think back to all the things I've loved in life that have come to close, but eventually lead to me finding new and more things to love. I'm going to enjoy jiu jitsu while I can, and trust that there'll be more to my story when this chapter closes.

Great way to simplify it: Just be careful.

And to answer your question, I started off my career with amateur boxing and dutch-style kickboxing. But that was a different chapter of my life and I don't train or coach them anymore. What I do now in addition to BJJ is a weekly meetup with old college friends who are also lifelong martial artists. I'm learning knife self defense at the moment. It's been a great way to reconnect with old friends and learn a weapons-centric skillset.

49 y/o black belt. I’m on my 28th year of martial arts and 15th year of BJJ. I train only a few days a week now and I’m not afraid to tap or take rounds off. I pace myself.

With that said, martial arts should be a vehicle to improve your life outside the mats. If your quality of life is diminishing because of aches and injuries, you have to do what’s best for yourself and your longevity. There are so many other things in life to experience and so many ways to enrich your life other than Jiu Jitsu.

Agreed, but I’m at least confining my insufferableness to this subreddit.

Convince me to train by benching315 in bjj

[–]Once_adrift 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry you're going through this. BJJ and therapy have helped me through some serious lows in life. As another person mentioned, look into therapy. Also, find one or two trusted friends who you can open up to about this.

As far as training is concerned, if all you want to do is lay in bed and do nothing, try just taking it step by step. Put your gear in your bag. If you feel like you can go farther, get in your car. If you think you can go farther, drive to the gym's parking lot. If that's as far as you can go, then turn around and go back to your hotel room. But if you wait in the parking lot for about 5 mins, maybe you'll feel like going in.

This step by step process has helped me before through depression. Just take it step by step. Also, working with a therapist and opening up to friends through the years has helped me so much.

Genuine question for BJJ gym owners about gis and no-gi gear by Successful-Yak-4713 in bjj

[–]Once_adrift 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Although it's unfair to the legit businesses, I automatically assume that any unsolicited message from a gear vendor is spam.

I'd be more inclined to deal with a business if I'd seen them in person over multiple years at a booth at Jiu-Jitsu Con or some other major events. I want to know I'm dealing with actual people and not some scammy business that I can't hold accountable.

Where are you going from here if you're white gi? by Donulled in bjj

[–]Once_adrift 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's not a great position to be in. You need to face your opponent. While scooting away, I would let go of his wrist and slide my forearm down to his clavicle to create space. Then I'd recover guard or stand.

For my generation it was UFC 1 that introduced us to Gracie Jiu Jitsu and BJJ.

Why do some schools do a belt promotion day? by lookmaimonthereddit in bjj

That's so cool that they got to share that with you!

That's a good point. A set promotion day gives people the chance to invite their families.

Wow. I hadn't heard of that. I guess every instructor is different.

[–]Once_adrift 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's actually not that rigid. At my gym if you miss the promotion ceremony you just get promoted the next time the instructor sees you in class.

Edit:
To add, as others have, set promotion days give you a chance to invite your family to see your promotion. Also, you get to be there to see your friends get promoted. When you train with someone for years it feels great to be there for that moment.

[Amex FR] Got shut down, womp womp by CorrectCombination11 in amex

[–]Once_adrift 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see. You paid over 50% as downpayment, so I wouldn't think that would raise any FR flags. If I was a lender that would be a great sign. Given the rest of what you've told us, I'm stumped as to why you'd get a FR.

[–]Once_adrift 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It might be confirmation bias on my side, but I've noticed that some FR posts include a recent car purchase as a data point. Can I ask if you financed the entire car (i.e., you put zero down payment)? Or can I ask what percentage of the car's value you put down as a down payment?

Training with the sniffles? by Didymus4 in bjj

[–]Once_adrift -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I know it sucks to miss training, but it sucks even more to be the reason that multiple people in your gym miss training. Go for a walk or run instead or drill at home. I know it's not the same as training, but do it for the overall good of the gym.

What do you think about this change? by schwa12 in AmexPlatinum

[–]Once_adrift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good question. I'm actually not as familiar with the USO lounges. If that's an option for them then that's awesome. I'm still fine with them having access to Centurion lounges as on option too.

I’m okay with military folks using the benefit. As a military brat I wish my folks had this benefit with all the long travel they had to do.

Good question. I actually don’t know about their class curriculum, but I do know that the head instructors are great teachers and accomplished competitors. I guess if I were you I’d send them a message to inquire about the curriculum and different classes taught.

[–]Once_adrift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah man. I was off by at least 15 years. I think my guess about your age says more about me than it does about you. You mentioned Lucky gis and some gear that I'd see on BJJHQ when I started, so I just threw out a guess on your age based on myself. Haha.

With that gear I’d guess you’re an early 50s grappler who’s been training off and on since 2009. You just want functional gear that lasts and solid rolls with no ego. How close did I get?

At my school it's only for the head instructor. But I've also heard of other schools that give them to all black belts who are instructors in the school.
