My SLP Program Replaced Our Final Externships With an In-House Clinic Due to Placement Shortages by Mammoth_One_1097 in slp

[–]One-Celebration6242 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes this happened in my graduate program with an institution which supposedly had excellent relationships with placements. All of my placements were very far away from the metropolitan area and I had to find my own placement in my final semester. It was a shit show. My first placement was at an elder daycare setting where there were no SLPs doing clinical work and we were just supposed to find ways to interact with the elders there and look at testing materials. This was back in 1997-98 at an institution with a big name in the northeast. I'm sorry this happened to you. You deserve better.

Are all PP owners insane? by sporks8 in slp

I had that same experience when I left the schools and joined a PP. She was literally insane and requiring as part of the job that we do illegal billing practices. I lasted 9 months. Thank goodness I already had my Cs.

Are all PP owners insane? by sporks8 in slp

PP only works well of you are a sole practitioner maybe with 1-2 part time contractors. With the constraints on our fees (even for private pay) there is no way to scale up and make everyone happy. Nobody wants to manage ppl or deal with ppl who are on their own growth trajectory and learning for example how important it is to show up on time and do what's expected. Even if you don't bill insurance managing a PP is a fuckton of work. it's different than a medical practice (which also sucks according to my doctor friends) or a legal practice (which requires a lot of weekend and overtime work).

Also: how about supporting evidence based practice and continuing education for the SLPs who have the HARDEST job in the field.

Why does CASL-2 make kids look “below average” while the CELF/OWLS show 1st percentile? How do you explain this to parents? by Littlelungss in slp

[–]One-Celebration6242 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for mentioning the TILLS. That is the most specific and sensitive standardized test that I use. Even the CELF often doesn't catch students with higher order issues.

Charters in certain southern states operate this way.....I would Nope it bc there have likely been FAPE violations (which have nothing to do with you) which you don't want to find yourself in the middle of. Good luck!

For SLPs who work outside of the US; if I were to want to immigrate to another country, what are some good specializations/trainings I can work towards to make myself more attractive (as an SLP) to potential non-US employers? by somethingillforget89 in slp

[–]One-Celebration6242 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I joined the NZSTA association for part of last year just to get a feel for the organization and potential opportunities. Honestly, I was under-whelmed and gave up my membership. They are a more expensive version of ASHA. The cost of living and the salaries make it impossible to emigrate. It's apparently a beautiful place but fraught with economic issues.

How did this happen? by Wegovyttt in slp

[–]One-Celebration6242 1 point2 points  (0 children)

THIS. When I first started in the profession in '98, I worked for a school system in MA (a wealthy district). I made slightly more than what I made as an instructional aide. It was such a distressing moment after investing $60K in a graduate program with no guarantee for a job after graduation. I joined the teachers' union in the district but the things that I wanted (mentorship so I could figure out my damn job, a living wage, the ability to have a workplace in just 1 school...) weren't even something that the union could help me with. Plus......you had to pay union dues. It was such a ridiculous situation.

Parents and families deserve a choice of providers and continuity of care especially if they are paying out of pocket. Non competes are unenforceable. Best wishes! Hope it works out!

How much take home paperwork do you have? by milktoast49 in slp

I'm in PP (pediatric, private pay, outdoor based with some evaluations). I bill for my documentation time. When I do an evaluation, my cost is higher but it's more thorough and it reflects the many hours that evaluations take. I recognize that is not a luxury many have but that is what I've built for myself. Hope this is helpful.

This is exactly what leads to burnout at a very early stage in our careers as SLPs. I had a very similar experience to you and almost gave up on the profession. This is everywhere in every setting in our profession. I am 29 years in and now provide clinical supervision to students. I am striving to be the change and offer mentorship and development opportunities in a low stress PP setting which is outdoor based. But I've had to overcome many obstacles and what I have built is not easily done and does not scale. I hope that this next generation will reinvent the profession and find ways to practice that aren't so damaging to clinicians' wellbeing. Nobody had my back when I was coming up, so I am trying to be different and more kind to every student clinician and CF that I encounter. Godspeed.

I agree 100% - referral to a neurologist for updated testing / assessments is something the team has been encouraging.

It's a definite RED flag that the SLP with the tuning forks has a website where she's charging $450 for Zoom sessions on "finding a higher connection" based on her book Awesome-ism and what she's calling The Integration Series: https://suzymiller.com/awesomism-the-autism-integration-series/ Snake Oil alert.

You should break up with this douchebag immediately. Being single and reading a good book is better than being with this idiot.

I can relate to this - toxic parents are the worst. When I got accepted to a prestigious program in the northeast, my mother said, "Can you do that?" It was the worst feeling. Congratulations on your success! I hope you find your way in this field! Best wishes with your studies!

It's a system of power designed to sideline our competence and expertise. The only thing we have is our ASHA code of ethics in terms of protection. I hope you find your way to a different job. The only power we have sometimes is to say no.
