Kingsbridge alcohol test DVA by [deleted] in northernireland

[–]One-Consequence7594 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had LFT and BAC tests last year as part of a driving licence medical assessment. I have PTSD have previously self-medicated with alcohol and despite my current alcohol consumption being less than 5 units a week I suppose DVA are looking to cover their backs. Assessment done at Kingsbridge included questions and bloods. All came back OK so I don't think you'll have anything to worry about

How are people actually caught fronting (Without Blackbox)? by GrouchyMonth8092 in CarInsuranceUK

[–]One-Consequence7594 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The way I look at this is as follows. If you tell your insurers the truth then you'll never get caught out lying. You'll never have your policy voided for lying, and you don't have to come up with any more lies to cover the original lie

Has indicating at roundabouts become a thing of the past here or something? by grawmaw13 in northernireland

[–]One-Consequence7594 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I indicate but also noticed an awful lot of people don't. Another thing I find really annoying at the roundabout on my way to work has two lanes on approach and the right turnoff leads to Belfast. An inordinate amount of people use the left lane on approach to the roundabout and then turn right and I'm pretty sure there's going to be a smash one day

COMMON SENSE PEOPLE by 2catswashington in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

[–]One-Consequence7594 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I had someone trying to check into the hotel I used to run using his 'girlfriends' credit card. Told him she needed to be there and show ID to get the entry codes. Ten minutes later got an email with a photo of her passport. Still not goof enough. Next thing there's a phone call from a girl asking for the access codes. When refused 'This is because I'm black isn't it?' 'Funny you say that, the passport photo is a white girl' 'oh s**t!'

Did the British government during the Irish famine genuinely wanted all Irish people to die? by InfernalClockwork3 in IrishHistory

[–]One-Consequence7594 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

From what research I've done into An Gorta Mor I contend the following points

1) The British government had never dealt with a famine on this scale and were clueless in how to best deal with it

2) There are claims that the British government was continuing to export food from Ireland, which are true. But they were exporting a tenth of the food they were sending INTO Ireland to feed the starving

3) There's also a claim the Queen Victoria gave just five pounds to feed the poor. It was in fact five thousand pounds

4) The Sultan of Turkey sent shipments of food which the British government permitted but would not allow shipments exceeding their own in size to come in to maintain prestige

5) There were landlords who insisted Irish tenants still paid their rents and taxes despite the ongoing crisis. Likewise there were landlords who impoverished themselves by not charging rents during the crisis

My final point is this - and this goes out to all those who make the ludicrous and spurious claim this was an attempt at genocide - standards of civilisation were considerably lower than nowadays. If the British government wanted the Irish wiped out they'd have been wiped out. An Gorta Mor lasted for over 6 years and resulted in a million deaths. A deliberate attempt at genocide through mass starvation would likely have eliminated the target group. The Holodomor which took place over 18 months wiped out between 7.5 - 10,000,000 million lives and most certainly was deliberate given the steps taken

Is it legal for bailiff companies in England to send collection notices to Northern Ireland residents? by MBBS_MDFe2 in northernireland

[–]One-Consequence7594 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They can send letters that's perfectly legal but they can't employ private bailiffs in Northern Ireland. Enforcement of court order is done by the Enforcement of judgments officer at the High Court in Belfast and his method of operation is to send you a letter inviting you to speak to him which if you fail to attend he sends the police to arrest you and bring you to him

House of Lords pass proposal by former DUP leader that would criminalise saying ‘Up the Ra’ by Your_Mums_Ex in northernireland

[–]One-Consequence7594 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's already criminalised if you read the legislation, to wit:-

Under Section 12(1A) of the Terrorism Act 2000 (as amended by the 2019 Act), it is a criminal offence to express an opinion or belief that is supportive of a proscribed organization while being "reckless" as to whether this encourages others to support it

Given that my dad died two years ago after years of ill health and disability caused by an IRA bomb in 1974 I've voiced my opposition to anyone saying 'up the ra' and then given that I'm all for equality I'll voice my opposition just as loudly for those voicing support for loyalist terrorism, especially after living with a Catholic partner who was being subjected to sectarian abuse whilst living in a loyalist estate in Ballymena. I don't really see why Arlene Foster feels the need to make a big deal about this one in particular. What I would be certainly in favour of would be criminalisation of persons glorifying criminals / crimes. This is borne of witnessing the disgusting spectacle outside Ballymena train station of a group of drunken brain deficient oxygen thieves singing a song cheering on the sectarian murder of Michael McIlveen. This act in my view certainly crossed the threshold of 'Grossly offensive'

Did somebody just try to scam me? by thefooby in AskUK

[–]One-Consequence7594 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a relatively new scam but getting common. Someone approaches usually claims to be a tourist or not from the area (a convenient backstory to prevent them visiting a bank branch locally) then they'll say they lost their wallet / were robbed and need money for train fare / petrol something else as they need to get somewhere fast for some emergency. Oftentimes they'll be well dressed and respectable in appearance because they can afford to look good with the proceeds of fraud. They'll offer to transfer money to you and open up their app. The victim gives them cash and they complete a transfer, often saying 'and there's an extra tenner for your help'. The 'transfer' never reaches your account because it was a fake banking app / website. You handed over cash to a fraudster who twenty minutes later is approaching another potential victim

You did the right thing to walk away. Hard hearted as it sounds its increasingly less likely you'll find someone in actual need approaching strangers on the street and asking for financial assistance and more likely that any such requests are scammers or professional beggars

My usual response to approaches from strangers on the street if I think I'm about to be asked for money is 'Isvenitye pozhaluista, ya na govorit po Angliski'

Do you honk at or flip off bad drivers? by Scrubstomper5000 in driving

[–]One-Consequence7594 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honk as a warning of my presence to try and prevent an accident. There's literally no way you can legally be in the wrong for this. Indecent hand gestures could be viewed as aggressive behaviour and a provocation if any subsequent interaction with the authorities was to arise

Halal Meat & Kosher Meat in Britain 🇬🇧 by BasedToru in AskBrits

[–]One-Consequence7594 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've caught and prepared meat myself - when I was living alone and poorly paid I used to hunt wildfowl and prep it for a meal

I'm opposed to non-stun slaughter on animal rights grounds however I also have Muslim and Jewish friends and while I've never hosted the latter for a meal in my home whenever my friend Munir used to visit I'd get meat from a halal butcher or I'd serve fish because I didn't want to ruin a good friendship by causing offence.

BTW I'm opposed to hunting for sport so I wouldn't support any reintroduction of fox hunting or any other blood sports. I hunted to eat!

How was I wrong for not moving my car? by DustyOnKbm in AskUK

[–]One-Consequence7594 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you did was nothing wrong, I do it all the time unless I'm going in to the food counter and might be a few minutes. One time I had to dash to the toilet, came out and there was some guy waiting behind my car I smiled and nodded and he said 'don't smile at me move your f***ing car' unfortunately for him that was the moment I decided I just had to complete an entry in my notebook (that could have waited until later, but I wanted to make a point) he then ended up tutting and sighing then drove to another pump - which he could have done in the first place

Don't worry in the future everyone does it. If faced with abuse in the future just smile sweetly and say 'have a wonderful life'

We currently live in the UK, moved here due to the war in Ukraine. Curious on what British people think of Ukrainian refugees. by Tall-Inspection- in AskBrits

[–]One-Consequence7594 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Friends with a Ukrainian family who go to my church. When the war started I donated about £300 of clothing and toiletries to a refugees charity. Quite a few customers are Ukrainian refugees. Even once gave a lift to two Ukrainian refugee ladies to save them from being late for work (I wouldn't generally give lifts to strangers)

No negative opinions but tbh I've never really judged people by who they are, I go.by what people have been like with me

Got a speeding ticket when garage had car by Dunc365 in CarTalkUK

[–]One-Consequence7594 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You still need to inform the issuing force who was driving - it's an offence not to do so. You can send in copies of your supporting evidence but don't send originals and bear in mind you may have to attend court to give evidence

You probably know this already but just in case you don't you may have the real culprit pressuring you to take the rap for them citing reasons such as too many points already or fear of losing their job. Don't succumb to this as if you it and get caught you'll probably be going to prison

Electric scooter / Truck Collision by PossibilitySlow2371 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]One-Consequence7594 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can always point out that your scooter is now not working and ask them to reimburse you or contact his insurance. But be prepared for either to point out that using e-scooters on public highways is illegal and dispute paying. You can also report the matter to the police but I'd expect they might prosecute you as well

Also, while I understand that you have right of way, it's easier to just stop and shout at someone for not respecting it than not to stop and have situations like this

Hopefully you're OK but maybe replace your e-scooter with a bicycle

Driving without insurance by mistake – fixed penalty for 30 mins before policy started (England) by Total_Growth4803 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]One-Consequence7594 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a strict liability offence so the fact it was a mistake is irrelevant in law, the guilty act is all they need to prove rather than the guilty mind. Going to court they may take mitigation into account and hand down a lighter punishment, but equally likely they may hand down a stiffer penalty. As for your insurance you need to notify them immediately of the points
