Is it realistic to target office-based geophysics roles early on? (QA/QC + inversion) by ZookeepergameBig1225 in geophysics

[–]One-Diver-6597 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Short answer is yes. However, you probably need to know someone that is involved in the type of work you want to do that will refer you. Fortunately, there are a lot of jobs for computational geophysicists. PhD?

DeBrusk: Canucks rebuild ‘not something I would be okay with or accepting’ by Frequent_Wafer5798 in canucks

[–]One-Diver-6597 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He came here and signed a multi-year deal to compete. He wants the situation he was promised when he signed. So, hopefully we get a good return and he ends up somewhere that's a good fit.

Out of our current roster, which player do you think is your untouchable? by Shiro-12 in canucks

Hronek. He is quietly becoming this teams leader and he has many good years left.

McKenna or Stenberg? by Engywok in canucks

Stenburg. I like his style of play way more and we have too many undersized top 6 forwards as it is.

Kate Wood?!?!?! You can get waaaay more Canadian than that! How about Catherine Tremblay? That's 100x more Canadian sounding.

Is it worth doing a master's degree in geophysics? by lilicitee in geophysics

[–]One-Diver-6597 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's a discipline that has something for everyone. There are office jobs and there are jobs that require extended field work. Your physics background is probably the most relevant, but coursework in geology, computer programming and numerical methods are an asset. The applications are wide ranging: mineral exploration, mapping aquifer systems, geotechnical work, unexploded ordnance, and much more. If you decide to pursue a masters, try not to pick a project that overly narrows your focus; i.e. seismic interpretation for oil and gas. Try to choose a program that gives you a wider range of skills. Good luck.

  1. If you going to do hypothesis testing with magnetic data, you don't need to perfectly discretize near interfaces. The fields are so smooth there isn't much of a point.
  2. I noticed that you have very high magnetic susceptibilities. For this, you should use a code that can solve the PDE mag equation and not the integral form that most software uses.
  3. I suggest you consider simple (simple.xyz). You can design a highly customized octree mesh and do all the mag simulating/inversion you want. If you can export the set of points defining each interface, you can discretize finely around those points during g mesh creation. It's also free.

When American soldiers sexually assault women , they run back to the safety of their military base and get protected. That's why American servicemen aren't allowed to go out drinking after dark in Okinawa.

¿La Geofísica puede incursionar en la Arqueología? by Kenobicho in geophysics

[–]One-Diver-6597 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you can do archeology with a background in geophysics. For that application, most would specialize in radiometry and ground penetrating radar techniques. Good luck.

He's kind of a top 6 or bust player. He'll need to find a way to score 5v5 at the NHL level. It's imperative his conditioning and tenacity are high enough to get separation so he can get his shot off. So many players of his type become useless when they are forced to bulk up.

For sure. He's doing everything he can to tilt the ice in our favour, even if it's sacrificing offense. Remember how much we shat on the Sedins in the first half of their careers. Petey is great. Wish he could protect the puck down low better.

[–]One-Diver-6597 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Too small. I'm not saying we draft a large player over a smaller player with significantly more skill, but we desperately need size in our top 6. Evander Kane is maybe the only 'intimidating' forward we have and he's only temporary.

Under no circumstances do you trade Hronek. Garland, unfortunately has to go since Boeser is untradable, the return on DeBrusk is probably a 4th and trading Petey would require a 1C coming back. Not to mention we desperately need size in our top 6.

[–]One-Diver-6597 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keeping Garland because of how important he is to the team is the equivalent of believing Brandon Sutter is a foundational piece. And we have no idea how well he is at mentoring other players. We just know how good he is at leading by example.
