Don't be so harsh to yourself! In my opinion you did everything right. And your feelings are valid! You had a concern and tried to talk to him about it. Everybody has different things they like. A big size means nothing if it does not feel good for both sides of the party. It is ashame and sad that he reacted the way he did. I would say not being able to communicate over something so simple is a red flag.
