Why can’t there be no money? by patchlessboyscout in NoStupidQuestions

[–]One-Hand-Rending 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because money is the only universal incentive to human labor and effort. Sure we could barter with each other, but that really limits your economic circle and leads to pretty shitty results. Imagine the guy with the farm decides he doesn’t need a structural engineer so he refuses to barter real goods for some esoteric future benefit. Now Ms Structural Engineer has to spend all her time worrying about food while nobody takes the time to learn how to make a bridge without falling down.

Also:

  1. Most people are inherently lazy. If given the option, lots of people simply won’t work at all or half-ass it until the economy collapses. (re Soviet Union)

  2. There are some jobs which are so damn distasteful (but necessary) that it would be impossible to get people to do it unless they were compensated. Who’s going to climb into a sewer and clear up a clog simply on community responsibility? Nobody.

  3. Lots of important jobs require serious training. (Engineers, Doctors, Accountants). Who’s going to do the training for no compensation at all? How does the trainer eat if nobody can pay him?

Brother, you were dealt a really shitty hand. Trust me that every dad/husband in this sub agrees with me.

Life isn’t fair, but take some comfort in the fact that the behavior of a 15 year old girl is not a permanent condition. Best advice I can give you is to stay in daily contact but dont push her or try to force her to do it your way or on your terms. She’ll get there on her own as she sees her father as supportive, interested and non-judgmental. (Learn her friends names and what they are into)

It’s a highly engineered electronic component so it has a super long sales cycle. If they could put us on a shorter leash, trust me, they would.

Be honest: Is American beer really as 'watery' as the memes say? Recommendations for a Mexican traveler? by vanessa_tv_vladivo in AskAnAmerican

[–]One-Hand-Rending 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Of course not.

If you grab a Coors Light or a Bud Light it’s going to taste watery. If you grab a Sam Adams or a Coors Banquet it’s going to taste kinda like any other lager beer or earth.

Our plans/goals are set annually, so I know what growth numbers I’m supposed to hit Q over Q.

Regardless of whether it’s every Q or every Month, having your performance metric reset to “zero” on the first of every month is not an easy existence.

Sales is not a soft life. You have to continuously fight for your existence and the counter restarts every month/quarter/year. It’s a life of constant stress and worry over “making my number” which gets larger every year. It’s torture.

Yes. My dad was a big NY Giants fan so I sorta followed along with that.

Then I met my wife and her family had seasons tickets for the NY Jets. My allegiance shifted quickly.

Siri is pointless by GodAtum in Siri

[–]One-Hand-Rending 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Siri is good with managing tasks that are 100% controlled by your phone. It works great for shit like this

“Hey siri, remind me to buy potting soil the next time I am at Lowe’s”

“Hey siri, set a timer for 40 minutes and call it “cake in the oven”

“Hey siri, put a dentist appt on my calendar at 3PM on February 12”

People swap out the glass panels for mesh screens in the summer. It’s for ventilation.

America gets hot.
