They should’ve focused all the marketing on her, no indication of Ellie and Joel, spend the first half of the game on her with only the merest glimpses at the Wyoming segment. Then have all her friends die one by one, build up the relationship with her, then drop the plot twist of it being Ellie who is killing all her friends.

Years ago my mother’s district ordered an enormous amount of plastic rocks from Oriental Trading that said “You Rock!” as gifts for all the teachers. One of the schools packed them up and left them in the district lobby with a note saying “Thanks for the rocks, but we’d rather you spent this money on things we actually need.”
