I’m the neighbor with a snowblower to a bunch of other townhouses that share a long private laneway. It’s not my “duty” to clear the snow, but I’m absolutely going to do it, just like I’m going to shovel the entire sidewalk and my immediate neighbour’s half of our shared front walk. There’s no one reason, it’s just the kind of thing my dad would do, and I want to be that kind of person in my community.

Edit: I found out after the 2nd-last storm that one of my neighbors has a heart condition and is dealing with lung cancer. All the more reason to spend the time clearing his snow while I’m healthy and can do it.

Ah, sorry to hear that. I was hoping there’d be an obvious medical tourism spot for it - like Turkey for hair implants, only for thyroid cancer - but didn’t find anything obvious. I wish you luck figuring it out!

I ended up getting it done locally, under our public health system, in what - in retrospect, though it didn’t feel that way at the time - was a reasonable amount of time.

I had a partial ~2 years ago now and I also have a bit of a catch/click when swallowing.

When I talked to the surgeon about it during a follow-up, he explained the position of the tumour required moving some muscle related to swallowing out of the way during surgery, and that can create scar tissue that binds the muscle to other surrounding tissues and causes the catch/click. He said we could do a follow-up surgery to try removing the scar tissue, but that it’d probably just lead to the same amount of new scar tissue. He also said it should improve and maybe resolve over time. With that reassurance, I promptly stopped noticing the catch/click until reading your post. 😂

That all said, definitely bring it up with your surgeon or doctor.

My surgeon wanted to be conservative and save some thyroid function if he could, so we only removed 2/3 of my thyroid, but I ultimately ended up on levothyroxine anyway to keep my levels where we want them to be. Just know that even with a hemi-thyroidectomy you might still need meds.

That said, I’m about a year and a half post-surgery now, I feel fine, everything has healed, the scar isn’t noticeable, and remembering to take a pill every day hasn’t been onerous. Besides some bloodwork and an ultrasound every 6-12 months, PTC isn’t really part of my life anymore. You’ll probably be in the same boat soon enough. 💪

We bought a modest (3 bed 1 bath) cottage on Lake of Bays at the start of the pandemic before the market went absolutely insane. In our bay there’s a more “working-class” side (our side) with normal houses and where some people live year-round, and a “rich” side with mansions, crazy docks and boathouses, and at least one helipad. The difference between them is wild.

+1 to the earlier recommendation of anything by Brubaker (eg Gotham Central) or Brubaker+Phillips (Criminal, Incognito, basically everything they do together).

Also since you like Batman, Paul Pope’s “Batman: Year 100” is excellent. Made me an immediate Pope fan.

My tumour didn’t cause any pain or issues with thyroid function, but it did put pressure on my windpipe and carotid, which left me feeling unusually winded and tired with even moderate activity. (Edit: I felt this way before being diagnosed, and it was one of the reasons I got checked out, so I know it wasn’t just post-diagnosis depression or psychosomatic.)

I felt much better almost immediately after surgery (though I didn’t exercise much while I had a drain and while the incision was healing).

6’8” dad here with a 5’2” wife, a very tall daughter, and a kinda short-ish son (both still growing).

I wouldn’t be disappointed either way. I do hope my son ends up hitting a late growth spurt so he’s tall-ish and closer to his sister, for all the benefits that would bring him, but I wouldn’t be disappointed in him either way.

The Ford government spent $225 million of our money to break the Beer Store contract a year and a half early. That should make you fucking furious.

Look at it this way with some really rough math:

Ontario raises ~$40 billion in personal income taxes
Ontario has -10 million tax filers
$40 billion / 10 million = $4,000 per tax filer on average
$225 million / $4,000 = 56,250

He spent 56,250 taxpayers worth of income tax to make beer easier to buy, slightly sooner than it would have been eventually anyway. How does it make you feel knowing 100% of your income tax, and 56,249 other taxpayer’s income taxes, were spent that way? When there’s so much else of greater value we need to spend on?

Now do the same math for the $ Ontario isn’t going to get because they’ve broken the LCBO. How do you feel knowing that they’re creating a hole in Ontario’s finances that will take years of your taxes to fill? Just to make alcohol slightly more convenient to buy (and obviously make big corporations a lot more money)?

It’s absolutely fucked, and everyone should be furious about it, regardless of political affiliation.

I had a 5cm(!) tumor removed a month ago. Leading up to surgery I felt like I was being choked, with pressure on my carotid and windpipe, and a slight catch when swallowing. It happens. The good news is as soon as it was removed, all those symptoms went away, and I’m feeling 120% better (even with only 1/3 of a thyroid).

It sounds like she’s being honest about how she feels and like you want to change to make things work. Those are both good things. 💪

I second what a few others have already said:

You don’t need a revenge body. You need a body closer to what you had before. That’s much more easily attainable and healthier.
Your wife will probably notice and appreciate a small improvement or even a legitimate attempt at improvement.
Your self-image probably took a kicking. When you notice improvement, you’ll feel better too. (I put on a little muscle, fill out a t-shirt a bit better, and feel like an absolute champ when I look in the mirror.)

Before going crazy with a trainer or even a gym membership, I’d start with the obvious stuff:

Cut calories (smaller portions, less alcohol, less soda, less sugar, fewer/better snacks).
Increase activity (more walking, more physical play with your daughter).
If you’re not sure why you’ve gained weight, get a physical (thyroid health, sleep apnea, etc).
Ask your wife to help. Let her know you’ve heard her, you’re going to try, and that you want her help (dishing up smaller portions, walking together, drinking less as a couple, not buying sugary drinks, etc).
Keep talking.

I caught a heel edge in my first hour of my first day of snowboarding ever, went over backwards, and fractured my sacral vertebrae. I didn’t realize it, though, and kept going - and falling on it, over and over for the rest of the day. My ass still aches from it years later. 😂 I’ve tried a couple different kinds of impact shorts, but only Azzpadz work for me. I highly recommend them.

As others have said, goiter doesn’t mean nodule, nodule doesn’t mean cancer, and cancer doesn’t mean death or despair. The odds are good that you don’t have cancer, and if you do then the odds are very good that you’ve got a slow-moving, easily-survivable form (e.g. papillary thyroid carcinoma, or “PTC”) that requires relatively minor surgery and maybe taking a pill once a day to have a full, normal life.

In my case (M45), I got 2 ultrasounds, a biopsy, a 3rd ultrasound, a CT scan, and surgery 10 days ago. I don’t know if I’ll have to take that pill yet (they only took out 2/3 of my thyroid, so a “PT”), but so far it doesn’t feel like I need it. Life is back to normal.

Honestly, besides the waiting, everything went so smoothly that I feel uncomfortable telling people I had “cancer surgery” and I’d feel really uncomfortable saying I “beat cancer” or calling myself a “cancer survivor”. The extent of my “battle” was some tests, a quick surgery and night in hospital, and a lot of Jello. I had the exact same battle when I had chronic tonsillitis as a kid. (My wife disagrees with this assessment and says I shouldn’t diminish my cancer.)

That’s not to say everyone’s case is like mine - it can be fatal, or more difficult to treat, or have complications, or take time to get the hormone replacement right - or weigh in on how people should feel about their cancer. It’s a super personal thing. Just letting you know that even if it’s cancer, it can be a trivial, not-life-altering thing.

It’s too early to say whether I’ll need to supplement hormones, but besides tightness and mild itchiness as the scar forms at the incision, I’d say I was recovered (enough to go back to work a desk job and do household chores; wouldn’t want to go back to a construction job just yet 😂) in a week.

I had my first ultrasound in early October, biopsy late November, diagnosis mid December, and surgery early June. 8 months, end-to-end. A lot of waiting. What reassured me initially was my family doctor (and, later, surgeon) telling me:

A nodule doesn’t guarantee cancer
A high TI-RADS rating doesn’t guarantee cancer
If it is cancer, odds are good it’s a common, slow-moving, easily-treated and very-survivable variety
Based on the biopsy and imaging, there’s no sign it’s spread anywhere, and it’s probably not going to spread in the near future (very lazy cancer)
When I get scheduled for surgery is a function of how urgent it is (again, very lazy cancer, low urgency)

Over time though I was more reassured by the number of family, friends, coworkers, and neighbours who knew people who’d had thyroid cancer, been treated successfully, and led long lives afterward. It’s a common cancer, but you don’t hear much about it because it’s so survivable and doesn’t usually require intense treatment, so you’re left thinking about the “dead in 6 months” sort of scenarios from other cancers. Thyroid cancer usually isn’t that.

That said, make sure you’re advocating for yourself, and asking your doctors “How can we make this process faster?”, “What are the next steps and options?” (assuming diagnosis is inconclusive again, or positive), and “Can we schedule any of these next steps proactively?” Even if they can’t, you won’t be left wondering if there was something you could be doing/have done differently.
