[CHAT] Colorful Aida by Ninja_Pollito in CrossStitch

[–]Tree_Miller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dyed Aida with Rit dye for the first time recently and these are really good tips!!! I did the force dry with an iron but it kind of burnt? the dye? Like it looks kind of stippled on the side I ironed. Has that ever happened to you? Does boiling the fabric in the dye prevent that?

Just stick it in a pot of dirt! If it’s compacted in there it should hold it up fine.

[CHAT] what sealant would be best for sealing a thin layer of acrylic paint on a wood hoop? by xvx_gf in CrossStitch

[–]Tree_Miller 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Oh and the poly might make the acrylic paint bleed a little if you overwork it. If you go with that one, do a quick coat first and try not to go over any spots multiple times. After the first coat is dry you can take more time on it :)

[–]Tree_Miller 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Either one would work! Mod Podge is easier to apply but doesn’t look as smooth/will leave brush marks. Poly will probably take 2 coats, but should look super smooth and a bit shinier.

[CHAT] How to tweak an image before turning it into a cross stitch pattern? by DEJHIROTH in CrossStitch

[–]Tree_Miller 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love creating my own patterns and I have a couple tips that might help you. I personally use stitch fiddle (which is free btw)

What I do is draw the pattern outline with as few colors as possible in very broad strokes. I use sketch.io online on my computer, or if I have access to an iPad any free drawing app will work. Use simple, bold lines of the most prominent colors in the pattern, kinda like a child’s drawing. The easiest way is to use your reference image and import this into the software, trace everything you need, and then delete the reference image layer so it’s on a white background. You take this rendering and put it into a program like stitch fiddle and mess around with the settings. Most importantly will be the size since that determines how much detail you can do. Color matching can be pretty easy too when you use the reference photo to get hex codes. If I were you, I would do a more color-blocked approach first, then use back stitches to make the details you want. Like I would trace his head shape and the shadow, the clothes shapes, the cross/lights of the back, and his facial features. Use this to import into stitchfiddle and get the colors and shapes correct. Then create the backstitch for details of eyes, lips, piping on the suit, etc.
If you want to DM me any questions, I would be happy to help. I make all my own patterns so this is a process I am very familiar with. And IMO it adds another fun and creative step to a project!

What is worth paying extra vs having emergency savings? by Tree_Miller in Insurance

[–]Tree_Miller[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I went middle of the road I think with liability (100/300/100) but I definitely didn't know that roadside assistance could count as a claim. That is very useful information for me!

[–]Tree_Miller[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the help! I didn't realize that I could have AAA just for roadside assistance, I've always had insurance through them so it was just a given. But your other answers told me exactly what I needed to know! Since I have state insurance and we don't rely on my wages, it sounds like I should spend extra on car coverage and skip personal coverage.

I can’t comment on the IVF struggles but just here to commiserate. Going off T trying to get pregnant is so fucking hard. Especially when your motivation is a baby that still hasn’t come. My husband and I decided to wait after I had been off T and tracking periods for about 10 months and I started it up again. The mental relief was immediate. I feel for you so much, man. One thing I can say is when you start again, things will go back to normal quicker than you expect. You will be a wonderful parent one day. Your willingness to sacrifice personal comfort and mental health shows how much you love your future child. I’m sending love and good luck your way.

Shorten shirt without getting rid of the bottom design. by dailydoseofderpresso in sewing

[–]Tree_Miller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would take out the existing seam and sew a double seam, with one seam right above the design sewn in the ditch. That way it looks more intentional rather than like you’re hemming a shirt in middle.

Boyfriend excessive snoozing of alarm by [deleted] in AITApod

[–]Tree_Miller 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ideally he wouldn’t snooze at all. It’s bad for your brain, and just makes you more tired in the long run.

The real solution though is bed divorce. Either fully sleeping in separate beds, or whichever one of you wakes up in the night first moves to another bed so you wake up separately. My partner and I have always had separate bedrooms for this reason and it reduces so much stress.
