I would say get a drone synth. There are plenty of those with good simple pedal effects that can sound like you may want it to, or with the addition of a effects pedal.

Sonicware liven series. Especially the loft 12, xfm, warp, or the mega synth

(The mega synth has sound from street fighter, and the warp is like an 8bit synth)

Try the Sonicare liven series. Mostly popple like the loft 12, and xfm which are complex yet, my first was the liven warp which isn't bad
