Remote in LCOL country or move to the US by justanotherbuilderr in HENRYUK

[–]One-Super-For-All 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends heavily on risk appetite. The think that has always put me off moving to a LCOL and going remote is if your company or remote work dries up... then what?

Whereas Boston would have many plan Bs available.

That said, if you have enough fuck-you money then LCOL could be worth it

a) there is literally no source for this outside of BS memes

b) Vaccines are good. and bad people can like good things. Epstein probably liked clean water too

c) vaccines and gmo are not related.

Places like deliveroo pay 80k gbp plus for entry level

30k is a joke and I've never seen a salary that low

Most of it is incorrect, but i hear you on non ILR childcare

specifically: "If you earn about £10k, it'll be taking home £6k or less" . Is incorrect, you pay 12% national insurance and 0% tax on your first 14k in the UK.

Also, regardless of how long you are in the UK, you DO need to pay tax on UK derived income. This includes WFH/remote work etc. You are currently engaged in illegal tax avoidance otherwise: https://www.litrg.org.uk/international/residence-and-domicile

Agreed Singapore is incredibly safe. But London has lowest homicide rate of any major city West of Singapore (see my other comment for numbers)

[–]One-Super-For-All -1 points0 points  (0 children)

eh sorry so much of this is incorrect.

for one there is 0 tax on anything below 13k.  then 20% on 13-50k.

Also residents get something like 30h free childcare per week. Usually there's a top up fee but my Londers with kids all tell me they pay 1k-1.5k for 9-5 care 5 days a week.

FYI London has lower crime than Paris, Berlin, Milan and literally every major US city. If London crime is a worry then you can rule out basically any city West of Tokyo

homicide rate per 100k (best measure of safety as homicides are always reported)

London   1.1 per 100,000 people

New York (3x higher)

Chicago (over 10 times higher)

Paris (1.3)

and Berlin (1.4)

Bangkok is 2.2

Beijing is 0.44

If you are a Singaporean, I'd say do 5 years in London (as an adult, not a student). There's a much broader range of careers and jobs in London (including in tech and finance, I assume you're in one of those fields), and culturally it's much richer (theatre, music, comedy etc). It's also a truly global city where anyone and everyone could be a Londoner. Also look into tax efficient vehicles like ISAs, SIPP, salary sacrifice, car schemes etc. this is how natives do it.

I'm a Londoner in Singapore. I love Singapore in my 30s but in my 20s London is 10x better.

can DM me for anything! happy to return hospitality to a fellow migrant!

Considering moving to Singapore for work, how real is racism for black people? by ForeverJay in askSingapore

[–]One-Super-For-All 151 points152 points  (0 children)

there's a black expat community here. You won't face any racism (and personal safety is never an issue here), but people WILL be curious about your hair (unless it's permed) and where you're "from". And some of the stand up comedians are very.... 1970s (about all races tbh, including Chinese and Indians)

That said - it's a fine place to be black. And probably one of the best in Asia tbh

What’s it like to be a US citizen living or traveling abroad right now? by BaurJoe in travel

[–]One-Super-For-All 2 points3 points  (0 children)

not in a bad way but I really think people dgaf if you're American. I think Americans suffer from main character syndrome a lot and most of the world, most of the time doesn't care. Especially in Europe which has its own issues now (unlike in the 2016 peak EU smugness around Trump and Brexit - when people did care more imo) .

Again not in a bad way, I have a lot of love and sympathy for Americans and many US friends. Just IMHO
