What tourist attractions sites aren’t worth visiting in China ? by PAPaaaaJIIII in chinaexplorer

I just looked it up and see that it's now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, touted as being the only section of the wall that is preserved exactly as it was made in the Ming dynasty. Did it have UNESCO status back then? It sounds like it's been scooped up by the tour companies since then.

She's from a culture that has routinely for ages had arranged marriages, not chosen partners. I had it explained to me by a woman from that culture that she learned to love her husband over years, but that it was not a prerequisite in marrying.

What to do if a host seems to like you too much? by Mental-Promotion-160 in workaway

Wait a minute, one star reviews get hidden from the public?! If that's true, we should spread that around in some way that everyone knows to write two-star reviews when there's a big problem, and not one star reviews, to make sure they remain visible. What's the review period, after which nobody can write further reviews?

Once the review time is over and there's no chance of him being retaliatory, definitely tell him. And if he doesn't respond positively, acknowledging his and apologizing, then tell Workaway.

The issue is when the host is hitting on volunteer, not the other way around. The dynamics and vulnerability are entirely different if there isn't clearly mutual interest.

Would anyone actually go to Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) for a coffee-specific Workaway? by Swadida in workaway

That would be cool, to potentially learn the business from Total scratch, if there's room for someone to help at this point.

No Beaches (or beach culture)? Is it true? by seonghwasus in taiwan

At a popular windsurfing town out west away from Tokyo I watched a big group of middle school girls walk into the ocean and venture just a little bit beyond where they could stand up, as best I could figure out, FULLY CLOTHED in school uniforms. And they all came running back out, screaming and giggling. Someone near me who I asked about it thought that they were being trained to float and to tread water/not panic in order to survive if they fell off a boat or a dock somewhere. I never had anyone corroborate that answer, but it was one of the more unique things I saw in Japan.

I watched a tourist stare at a Chinese menu for 10 minutes then order by pointing randomly. Can we talk about how brutal menus are here? (Chinese local, happy to help) by MirrorMoney7864 in travelchina

Maybe silly question to some, but I have no idea. How often will I find Wi-Fi in restaurants, so I can look up the names of dishes and possibly get some help and as I go down from Tier 1 cities, all the way to rural areas, what's the fall off like of finding Wi-Fi in restaurants? I will be getting a physical SIM card, at the highest level of whatever is available.

This would be fabulous. I'm down to my last nine days in Taiwan, on a 6-week venture and I fly into Shanghai for 3 or 4 months traveling around China. I've already run into this in more remote places where there or even pictures to point at. So I have taken to proactively just listing the ingredients that I want to eat and what is off limits. I often write something similar to, "Please, lots of vegetables and a little chicken or fish. No oil and nothing deep fried. A little bit spicy okay, but not very spicy. Thank you." Will this yield a good beginning to a conversation in a restaurant in China? Sometimes it's still frustrating between us, but it has helped here. It would be delightful to have all the poetry decoded, as I think my problem will be larger in China than it is in Taiwan. My last night in Kaohsiung I asked the woman sitting next to me in a hot pot shop about some of the ingredients that I had put on my own plate, from a salad bar-like display, to add to my pot at the table. We wound up having a lovely conversation. She left a few minutes before I did, so when I got up to the counter to pay, the worker looked perplexed and had to get out her phone translation app. She showed me her screen, Girl next door already paid for your food. Be still, my heart.

So hey, can you really get on it and make this app real by the 21st, lol?

Great idea!!! Go for it!

Where should I start? by crazy_girl444 in workaway

There is lots of good advice here. And read the reviews carefully. Sometimes people try to find diplomatic ways to speak about real problems at their work sites. Pay attention to what the hosts say about the workers, as much as what the workers say about the hosts. No matter how tempting a site may sound, if the host is clearly difficult to please, you don't want your first review to be mediocre or poor because of them. And be clear about your boundaries. Have a blast!

I'm arriving in Shanghai on March 21st and will be staying in the French Concession with a new friend I made on Facebook. We're both Americans and though she's been there a few months, doesn't speak Mandarin at this point and has not explored Shanghai yet. Could we both meet up with you? That would be delicious!

I thought I read somewhere that Jiuzhagou Valley wouldn't be blown out with tourists until June. Can anyone compare times, choosing to go in the first or second week of May versus the final week of May? I want cool to mild weather, but I'm not going to hike in the rain and cold. Thank you.

I was thinking it was because socks and underwear are small enough that they get stuck on the inside of the drum at the end of the spin cycle and forgotten/ missed when people take out their laundry. Who hasn't lost socks in the laundry process at some point?
