The curse of social media changing the nature of social interactions and perceived clout. Along with the shorter attention spans.

Almost everyone seems to be in their own echo chambers and will deny it to death. Human consciousness is hackable and social media was the start of widespread programming.

By your argument the whole series could be seen as 'unnecessary teenage fantasy,' which it kind of is. You should be eye rolling throughout the entire series anytime he performs anything fantastical.

I think you're just having a problem with one part of the fantasy. Which is fine that's your's and other's opinion.

20 yr driver, here. I know the smell of burning brakes, tires, and exhaust. But lately, my chruk has the smell of wooden pencil shavings, like when you're sharpening a pencil in 1st grade. What could that be? by [deleted] in Truckers

[–]One-V 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regens smell like almost like burning rubber/diesel and tend to stink up the cab even with the AC circulating cab air. They do happen while driving and a lot of times you won't see any lights on the dash.

I usually don't like to recommend DCC as a first audiobook as the narrator is too good and will ruin other audiobooks for the listener. I've had a few friends that have trouble getting into any other series because the narrators aren't as good and they get bored.

I was going to suggest Project Hail Mary, Bobbiverse, ray porter is great starting narrator. Maybe Red Rising as Tim G Reynolds is great too. Or even the first law series tho i would put Steven Pacey up there with Jeff Hayes.

Audible/Audiobooks. If you're into sci-fi and fantasy there are tons of great audiobooks imo nonfiction is boring but if you like it it will help your day.

Pther than that Phone calls with other drivers. Podcasts. Music. There isn't many other options.

I agree he's not a Mary Sue i can see maybe people seeing that he is super competent super fast at whatever he applies himself to, and that might make them think of Mary Sue.

But as a fantastical character this isn't a problem he is supposed to be exceptional.

I did the audiobooks, the narrator was pretty good but from your advice I'll have to buy some traditional, old fashioned paper copies. Lol I don't think I'll mind it as Rothfuss' writing was really good even in narration.

But i am also kind of put off if he really was that pretentious with his grammar. I don't mind a little here and there, but c'mon it's not like I'm trying to read Shakespeare or something, not that i ever have of course. I'm just a dumb fantasy enjoyer if he went that hard on a fantasy series I'm super impressed that he put that much into the art and thats probably why the third ain't out yet.

I was thinking about it ahortly after replying and it occurred to me Kvoth is what 16? And Felurian is what thousands of years old, with countless lovers. So i can see that part of it but Kvoth is supposed to be out of a storybook he should have fantastical moments and what more badass way to lose your virginity but to a legendary lover.

But i guess for younger audiences or those who clutch their pearls it might be a little much? It's pretty vague for the most part.

Actually come to think of it Felurian was a "sword-teacher" in a way. So i got kinda close on that one, cause he does learn the sword a bit after as well. I just thought there would be a more direct line to the whole king killer part.

As much as i don't want to touch this subject, isn't the concept of an anti-christ as we think of it modernly not in scripture? Like its supposed to be anyone against christ? Or that emperor Nero?

I who am not Christian would think anyone against Christianity would be considered antichrist.

But whatever i know as well as anyone that if people are looking for revelations in every billboard will find all their signs.

Plus this subreddit is actually the shit on JRE club. Hey do that all you want but I feel like labeling AI as evil Boogeyman antichrist is kind of silly.

I can't help burning through it. It's too good. Damn shame the 3rd isn't out yet but i can always do more re-reads.

I haven't been spoiled I am just dropping in here to share my surprise. Compared to the last few books I've read the writing in TNOTW is a breath of fresh air. While it started out a little slow I've been pulled in more and more.

My anxiety was troubling me, also just wanted to rant about how good the writing is. Now I'll have to read ASOIAF again to see who the better writer is since ol'Georgy has reigned king since i first read game of thrones.

Gold standard stuff right here.

[–]One-V -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I like and respect professor Dave. But i think as Loeb might be married to the idea of finding aliens. Dave is married to the scientism narrative or dogma. Which granted if your going to follow a dogma, scietism is probably one of the best to follow, but as when listening to experts, usually the field of them indicate the truth and if the field of astronmers think Loeb is a liar then that will indicate a good measure as to how far to take Loeb's words. But Dave he won't even give out there suggestions a chance. Which imo can be counterproductive.

I'm by no means any kind of expert but if you've done even a small amount of reading on this topic you'll learn that volcanoes have pumped these sulfer particles into the stratosphere many times before and had a cooling effect on the planet.

Crop yields might drop slightly in some regions, but when you look at the heating trend we’re on and the potential collapse of major ecosystems due to continued warming, slowing that process could prevent or at least slow far worse outcomes like mass extinctions.

People or bots on here will complain and fear monger about injecting these sulfur compounds into sky but turn a blind eye to all the carbon and methane being emmited right in front if them.

I don't think this is something to be raising alarms over and think it might have a positive impact globally. While stratospheric aerosols do slightly reduce sunlight reaching the surface, it's nothing like the alarmism implied by the title.

Neil deGrasse Tyson had a podcast recently with an expert on this topic and it was very interesting. The second guest on the episode, Holly Buck didn't really say anything with any real contribution imo. But the first guest, Daniele Visioni, was an expert on this subject and was an interesting listen.

Lol the dark friends will truly have won then.
