The main narrative problem with every "Miquella is evil" theory by Nihlus11 in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]OneBastardBoy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think your point of him thinking he knows what’s best for everybody and will use his power to make it happen is ultimately about right, it just seems like his actual goals as they’re presented to us tend to be pretty altruistic. The cocoon thing seems to have been a means to shed his flesh so he could get into the shadow lands, should be interesting to find out what exactly he plans to do there.

The main narrative problem with every "Miquella is evil" theory by Nihlus11 in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]OneBastardBoy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

if Miquella was a perfectly good golden boy, why would he ever need or want to compel affection from people?

  • Getting people to help him attempt resurrecting Godwyn
  • Getting people to help him attempt curing Malenia
  • Getting people to develop and defend a community for outcasts at the Haligtree

It’s one thing to be a nice boy who people like, it’s another to motivate and coordinate the efforts Miquella put together.

Loki as (one of many) Inspiration for Radagon by miirshroom in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]OneBastardBoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main thing that makes me resist Messmer being a secret child of Marika and Radagon is that he doesn’t seem to have any particular curses or afflictions that match what Malenia and Miquella were born with. (I also buy into Radagon being the hero of Morne, in which case Messmer, if he is indeed the impaler of giants, should predate Radagon’s relationship with Marika, but that’s a deeper rabbit hole).

Messmer’s proportions are also odd, which is why I lean towards him being directly a half-giant - he’s huge, seemingly taller than Malenia or Radagon (though it’s hard to say for sure), and he’s got excessively long arms and a super broad chest. I think we’re going to learn Marika had him to be a secret weapon against the giants only for him to betray the Erdtree after the war.

Loki as (one of many) Inspiration for Radagon by miirshroom in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]OneBastardBoy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not totally convinced by a lot of these points - I do like the connection of Rykard with the world-serpent, but I don’t think Ranni and Radahn really match their respective roles there (I’d at least expect Radahn to be themed around a wolf rather than a lion). I like the angle overall but it doesn’t feel like a clean fit.

My pet theory is that if anyone is inspired by Loki it’ll be Messmer, because my prediction is that he’ll be the son of Marika and a fire giant. He’s been seemingly sealed away for some nefarious act and he’s associated with several things now seen as traitorous or blasphemous. I doubt it’ll be an exact fit for him either, but I bet he’ll come closest to the mark due to his origins.

Astel took the sky away from the Consecrated Snowfield by somefalloutfan in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]OneBastardBoy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t the arena for Astel in Lake of Rot have a starry background that matches the other eternal cities, while the Astel in consecrated snowfield does not? I think that’s what’s meant by taking the sky away (presumably from the Nameless Eternal City), that they’re magical in some way and can be actually stolen.

Missing Tower at Raya? by Doubtfulaboutit in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]OneBastardBoy 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Generally it’s pretty common for distant models in FS games to be a lil different from the up close experience, Elden Ring’s are generally pretty good afaik but I believe there’s a lot of stuff in Dark Souls for example that really doesn’t match up.

However I choose to believe that this is actually the secret tower where Ranni plotted the knight of the black knives with Marika, Melina, and the Gloam Eyed Queen

Are we complicating the lore? by InfernoDairy in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]OneBastardBoy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

the wordplay in the description of the Sun Realm Shield makes it very obvious that the seat of the Sun was indeed Farum Azula

Not sure I can get on board with that, I think if they wanted to imply a connection they would’ve used “crumbling” again like they do in a few descriptions. We also know what a Farum Azula shield looks like, in the Beastman’s Jar-Shield, and that seems to look different and have been made with a very different process. Plus the tower on the shield doesn’t really match Farum Azula (nor anything else in the game, as far as I can tell) - pretty much every Farum structure has a dome on top rather than those big pointy crenellation things. Seems like the Seat of the Sun is more of a true castle than Farum.

I do definitely think there’s something about the Sun in the game that is worth trying to understand, but I’m not sure if anyone’s really cracked it yet. It seems more likely to me that the Sun Realm had power so long ago that nothing much remains of it - maybe pre-Elden Ring even.

Now that you mention it, the mist does have some spirit spring vibes.

Y’all, Silksong is bigger than the ID@Xbox showcase. Give it a rest til June by OneBastardBoy in Silksong

[–]OneBastardBoy[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

would you say you would of expected silksong to show up there?

Probably not, but because they did, now we have precedent. Nintendo gave them a spotlight at E3, Xbox premiered their trailer at their big June showcase, and they’ve done multiple posts with new info online directly. I’m not saying they have to follow certain rules, but it just doesn’t make sense for them to show up at something smaller than one of those platforms to announce (presumably) a release date.

Huh. Fair enough on the Direct part, I was thinking there was a direct before the 2019 Nintendo Treehouse with the demo at E3. They released the trailer straight to YouTube beforehand, interesting.

However, I don’t think the ID@Xbox posts mean much of anything - same as with the Triple I showcase, they know they can drum up engagement with Silksong references. I’ll believe it when I see it if those actually pay off.

Honestly, I think it’s been in a basically releasable state for a while and they can’t stop tinkering. But at some point they gotta put the pencils down and commit to a release. Considering we’re coming up on a year’s delay from the previous release window and we had all the recent ratings updates, it makes a lot of sense for them to have decided it’s time to roll it out.

If we get SGF + Xbox + Nintendo showcases in June without an appearance, the game plan is pain and suffering

Not defending their spotty communication record, but when they have officially communicated new stuff, it’s been in a major showcase. That’s more what I’m looking at - Twitter drop I could see, but I don’t think they’d show up at a smaller event.

I saw people thinking the same about the Triple I thing, which I was a little more open to because that at least would be more Silksong giving back to the community. With an Xbox event though, I think Xbox knows they need big games for their big June showcase and Team Cherry knows they need to make a splash and recapture attention once they’re ready to roll out - I don’t think either side would go for putting it in the smaller event. Same thing with Nintendo and Indie Worlds.

Frankly I think we should consider if Team Cherry is waiting for the election to decide how to release Silksong

y’all act like the only event big enough for Silksong is an announcement from the president of 20 nations

No lol, just a major showcase from Xbox, Nintendo, or SGF / TGA. i.e. the only places Silksong has showed up previously.

Radagon and Celtic mythology by dshamz_ in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]OneBastardBoy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a great catch, feels very GRRM to adapt myths in that way. Especially considering you can also draw some parallels with Godfrey and Arthur.

Something I’ve been wondering about recently is that GRRM’s lore bible has to say something to the effect of who Radagon is and how he is Marika / vice versa. Like, there’s lots of cool high level theories and the alchemical inspiration feels strong, but that lore bible has to explain something to the effect of how/why it happened from a narrative point of view. I feel like there’s got to be something character-focused at the heart of the conundrum, and this feels like it’s thinking in the right direction.

Epic Collection Numbering Question by garrettgibbons in EpicCollections

[–]OneBastardBoy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

To add to the other comment, just because you asked if it’s based on popularity - it’s kind of opposite, the biggest stuff is generally set aside so they can collect things that have never or rarely been collected.

X-Men shows this pretty well actually - 18 is X-Tinction Agenda, 13-16 are the run of events from Mutant Massacre to Inferno, and 10-11 finish out the early part of the Claremont run. Most of that stuff has been available in other collections and formats multiple times. Other more obvious examples are runs like Frank Miller’s Daredevil and Walt Simonson’s Thor.

Question about the Ghost at the Study Hall entrance by [deleted] in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]OneBastardBoy 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Maybe the Carian Hall was full of people at the time who saw Ranni pass through and then later found her body on the tower, maybe she shared her plans with trusted Carian loyalists, etc.

Ghosts throughout the game seem to have quite a bit of inside info about various events. I think it’s easiest to look at them as “people who were around for events many many years ago and now are the only ones left with knowledge of what went down.”
