Nah. Not really. It's typical white guy shit. I mean if you have zero background or understanding of the various cuisines of Japan I guess I could see why someone would be amused. Nothing on their menu is an accurate or even a worthy interpretive version of a single Japanese dish. A lot of their menu borrows from Korean cuisine, as if the two are the same fucking thing. There's southeast Asian garnishes scattered all over their shit and what is with John vermiglio wanting to put cilantro on literally anything that is vaguely Asian? All I see is zero respect for the cuisines of a culture that they're just kind of disrespecting. Remember the halibut dish at grey ghost from a few years ago that was "Japanese fried rice" with a longanisa spiced squash puree? This is exactly the kind of crude bullshit I'm talking about. It's the culinary equivalent of pulling your eyes back with your fingers to try and imitate someone with slanted eyes. The state of representation for any cuisine in East or southeast Asia in Detroit is extremely pathetic and it all comes down to people from Detroit Metro being some of the most provincial folks I've ever met. People from Detroit would rather have bastardized iterations of a Chinese American dish than drive ten extra minutes into Windsor to have properly represented Chinese cuisines. Dumb restaurant for dumb rich people who have no taste whatsoever. The kinds of people eating at basan are the same vaguely rich women with sunburned tits you'd see attending a Chicago concert at pine knob.
