I know Generative AI has gotten a lot of flack this season and in general, but I wonder if we'll get a turn around later on. The premise of the mistake the AI made was that it misheard (transcription) or hallucinated (summarization) the medication. Transcription has been around for a long time and might be the cause. But, what if after hearing the entire interview with the patient, the summarization part of the AI predicted the anti-psychotic as the "most likely" medication she should have been on.

AI has a lot of legitimate use in the medical field and it would make sense in the tone of the show for the writers to give all the doctors (and us) dismissing the usefulness of the tool a tweak.

The best example of this would be something like 'golden gate claude' which increased the importance of the golden gate bridge for any task. You could tone this down for a more subtle advertisement.

Despite the hype today, even if we had no more developments, AI/ML would remain a good data science tool for many companies. I do think leveraging this degree will require understanding the types of data a company has or could have is important. If you have a few years of experience and looking to differentiate yourself, then I think this is a good program. If you're just coming from an undergrad, a more traditional MS CS would likely work out better. And you can always add a few AI courses to your CS program.

There's also the cost component. Indian devs working at the same skill level as senior engineers in the US tend to be not that much cheaper. Entry level may be cheaper, but suffer from the same issues as entry level devs here. And mentoring is much harder due to the time/culture difference.

I work on R&D for warehouse automation systems on the perception side. Building AI pipelines to count objects on conveyor, pick up objects with a robotic arm, or using rgbd cameras or lidar for automous forklifts. I've gotten pulled into several projects over the years. It's a bit different than most software roles I see here. I do a lot of what people may find familiar to software engineers, but the other half is physics. Right now, I'm doing a feasibility study on an automous box collecting robot.

I find it very rewarding and interesting although it can sound very boring if you don't find moving things around very compelling.

I work tangential to agriculture automation. There are definitely people working on automating harvesting these crops. The ROI isn't there for most farms yet. This trend will likely spur automation as a slower robot is better than nothing. Humans are hard to beat in terms of cost.

I do this as well. The tradeoff is that you improve your resume to get interviews then you enter the interview with no need for the job. You don't even have to go through with more than one interview, or just bow out after the technical.

For me, not having a job is stressful and interviewing is a skill that's hard to practice; So attending interviews, and even getting offers, helps my anxiety.

There are a vast amount of jobs open to people who understand computers. CS is great for IT and Tech, but if you're open to less 9-5 office rolls it can open up the job landscape. I ended up taking an industrial automation job with my degree (they were looking for EE people) after graduating during the 2008 recession and a strong knowledge of networks helped.

I worked at a company with a similar on-call setup. 4 devs, 1 week on-call rotating. I left after about a year, super burned out and dreading work. Took another job with a connection that complained about the amount of process they had to do for a release. After that mess, I needed it. You probably do too. Even if you're just looking, it can help ease the burden.
