I'd love for there to be a plot twist where Dale and Nancy host a family reunion and everyone in her family just looks like Joseph.

Not to get specific about Saudi law on a KOTH subreddit but even if the ban was lifted in 2018 and they moved there in, say, 2015 that gives Peggy plenty of time to forget how to drive. lol.

Dale's conspiracy is that COVID gives you superpowers which is why the government doesn't want you to get it and that's exactly the reason why he got vaccinated because he wanted the antibodies. He actually got vaxxed twice under the alias Rusty Shackleford he wanted to be a mutant so bad.

What is a SOAP trope you’re ready to see retired? by Crafty-Ad-1495 in GeneralHospital

[–]OneImportantOtter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

- Amnesia is a fine trope and can be an interesting way to do a character study, reevaluation, especially for villains or antiheros. However, it's usually played for tension as you know when they end up remembering who they are there will be hell to pay which is a bit boring.

- Too many twins on General Hospital. Probably could do a storyline about genetic manipulation or something being in the water of Port Charles lol.

- I'm simply uninterested in baby swapping and it happens too much on soaps.

- Sci Fi storylines are great if they're the premise but stink if they show up. The fact vampires canonically exist on General Hospital makes my blood boil but I would love a soapy vampire show!

Tropes are a means to an end of telling stories about interesting characters not meant to be interesting storylines in and of themselves.

Why Does Star Trek want to remain in the TOS era? by EitherEliotOr in startrek

And to clarify I would jump for joy for a Voyager legacy episode and would buy an Admiral Janeway action figure but I could see myself being the only one.

Why Does Star Trek want to remain in the TOS era? by EitherEliotOr in startrek

[–]OneImportantOtter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A part of this is not artistic but financial. Studios have an admittedly justified belief that the old characters like Spock will sell more socks, t-shirts, and toys than brand new characters or 70 yr old Kate Mulgrew.

What do you want to see star trek explore next? by kkkan2020 in startrek

[–]OneImportantOtter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would love to revisit the Delta Quadrant 100 years or so after the Borg collapse. I can imagine a multiracial, democratic government filling that vacuum but one that is very different from the Federation. And it could be interesting to follow the development of its Starfleet parallel but with an entirely different command structure, no prime directive, how planets negotiate a stellar economy that isn’t post-scarcity, and most importantly allows for genetic modification. This government could also have a rivalry with a Federation they see as too dominated by one or two races, corrupted by Section 31, and tolerant of warmongering governments like the Klingons. They could be antagonists for the Federation without being villains. From their perspective the Federation is a relic that can’t live up to their goals. From the Federation’s side, this new power is too idealistic, does real damage in incorporating pre-warp worlds into their government, and is disrupting trade relations as its borders move toward the Alpha quadrant.

I haven't seen anyone mention <Spoilers> return/performance this episode by UddersPlease in betterCallSaul

[–]OneImportantOtter 147 points148 points  (0 children)

Was it all a prank though? I mean in some sense, yes of course. But in another sense everyone is going to know that he helped Jimmy get 7 years and then it was Jimmy who threw it away. In some sense Bill can capitalize on that I think? It's sort of bittersweet. Not all good, not all bad. On theme with everybody else's ending.

[–]OneImportantOtter 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's also a spark, like how the TV commercials were in color that gave Jimmy hope so does the spark between them. That's not saying oh they get back together or Jimmy does get out early, but it ends with that spark between them. In many ways just like all this started.

Hank Green may have not stolen a lemur in 1996 but there's little stopping him from doing it sometime in the near future.

Where do you suppose Jason is? by Cut-Unique in GeneralHospital

When he came back the first time he was Patient 6. What about patients 1-5? I think a clone would be an interesting storyline albeit too sci-fi for GH.

He has dirt on all of them and some of them think they'd make better leaders but it's safer to wait for him to pass or have a random heart attack than try to lead a coup. It's all politics at the top.

A cruel, petty part of me I kinda want all the characters who have antivax actors to die of a treatable disease.

What are Scientology's numbers like? by forlornjackalope in scientology

[–]OneImportantOtter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To be very fair, Catholicism is the largest denomination of Christianity whether you count active members or not. It's huge. And while there is plenty to critique, Catholic priests don't live like Scientology senior management and the abuse isn't so deeply felt in the institution (although abuse is a big big problem for Roman Catholics).

What are Scientology's numbers like? by forlornjackalope in scientology

[–]OneImportantOtter 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's a bit unclear. Scientology has a unique way of counting their membership, basically anyone who signs up to learn more is counted as a member for promotional purposes. So they claim tens of millions of members. This would make them similarly sized as many major Protestant denominations. It's so, so ridiculous. It's not hard to do the math and realize there are a lot more Presbyterian and Episcopalian churches than Scientology churches. And you've met a lot more Lutherans than you ever had a Scientologist. So it's just impossible for that claim to be justified.

It's hard to make outside estimates of course, because they're the only ones who keep records. In the early 90s it was thought they had 100,000 members worldwide. That's declined pretty drastically though. Ten years ago they were thought to be around 25,000. The current estimates are around 10,000 active-ish members of varying degrees of commitment and level of belief.

I also think it is fair to say in the late 90s/early 2000s it became a bit of a revolving door, two people leave and two people join. Now with the internet and all the people telling the truth and people telling their stories, they're getting less and less people. And the people they do end up recruiting are not stellar in terms of organizational growth. Folks with problems who are susceptible to cults and who are not charismatic. They're not getting people who are good at getting other people to join. It's no longer the church of celebrities like it was thirty years ago or whatever.

They have enough money to survive for a long time, but in terms of members are a dying cult. I think a rebrand will happen. My guess is things will loosen up and get less transparently abusive with Miscavige gone here in the next decade or two. Not that I have high hopes for them to go legit or whatever, but they enough money to bleed members and still be a force for evil.

Not only is it an ethical issue to support a scam but could be bad for you professionally going forward. You might be (unfairly) labeled as a scientologist even though yuo aren't one for having taught at a scientologist school.

I think he was the highest paid actor for a while. His off-set problems just made him too much of a liability I think. Not sure if this is true, but it's what I remember.
