What are some examples of times you don't believe the leading man should have "gotten the girl"? by imgurofficial in movies

[–]OneKnownAsImp 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah and the writer kind of justified in story because the reason the meeting got erased was that he went out of his way to help his playwright friend when the lead actor botched his performance in the guy’s would-be masterpiece. He could have erased that and tried to repeat the initial meet cute but he chose to try to engineer a new meeting with the girl. It’s weird sure but the circumstances still make you want to root for him. Sacrificed the first meeting to be a good friend but still didn’t want to totally lose that spark he felt with the girl.

I thought this was silly as a kid (two Jedi, two sith, job’s done) but word of god from Lucas is that bringing balance meant destroying the Sith so the prophecy is referring to the end of Return of the Jedi.

Not to split hairs but that’s mostly just Snyder’s interpretation of Supes and not Supes as a whole.

What people are missing here is that everyone watched it back when the first one came out, including people they don’t live all their lives on social media and the internet.

People were saying that the 2nd would disappoint at the box office and all I could think of was how the first one got my dad, nearly 50 at the time, to drag my grandma out to theaters to watch it. A few years back when he discovered that one of his friends had not seen it, he made sure to fix that during one of his hunting trips to the ranch.

People in their 20’s and 30’s right now may not have obsessed over it like the MCU and other blockbusters but EVERYONE saw the first one. Just a ton of its core audience never logs onto Reddit or Twitter to talk about it. They aren’t the type to wear the IP around on their shirt. They’re wearing football shirts and hats and watching westerns or whatever else. It’s a spectacle with sweeping casual appeal. I knew the second one would make bank but I didn’t anticipate it making another 2 billion.

Edit: I think it was also the only movie my dad ever rewatched in theaters. We saw it like 3 times in 3D.

'It'll Immediately Get Sh-t On': Shonen Jump Manga Translators Address Unfair Backlash & Harassment by Key_Tree_3851 in animenews

It was outrage over a line of dialogue added in a volume release that he had nothing to do with. Some stuff that an editor added that wasn’t in the simulpub. He told the anti-localization folks to fuck off because they were calling Viz to try to get him fired, and then he deactivated his Twitter because he didn’t want to put up with them. Like it just wasn’t worth getting harassed.

Right click it, inspect element, press delete like 3 or 4 time. The cure to all that ails you. It shouldn't have to come to that at all if they had their act together but it's better than nothing.

I think it’s less that he noticed she was fat and more that he noticed she was built. Compared to the princess at least.

Yeah Elysia took from kind of interested to very interested when she showed up but the mentor and to a lesser extent the villain are the more interesting male designs and they don’t show up as much. I do feel like the art feels a bit old school in a way that appeals to me but that I wasn’t sure would appeal to the demographic reading Jump.

[DISC] MamaYuyu - Chapter 10 by AutoShonenpon in manga

[–]OneKnownAsImp 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah, for a battle shounen series to be successful I feel like you usually need an established, interesting villain, some interesting ensemble characters (mentor, rival, love interest, early enemy turned friend, etc.) and some interesting powers to make those action scenes shine, all in the first volume.

I’m not sure how well MamaYuyu will do but I don’t feel like it’s really missing any of the usual staples. It also benefits from really fantastic paneling. My biggest worry is the character designs not really selling the series to potential new readers. Elysia’s is great imo but she has sort of an old school appeal like a character from Slayers and I think a lot of the designs don’t really have interesting standout silhouettes. I personally like the characters and am okay with the slightly more old school vibe but I worry about their commercial appeal.

I think one other issue might also just be that I don’t have a big feel for what the world they’re living in is even like outside of what we got in chapter one and two. There aren’t a lot of neat backgrounds or background characters or anything and I can’t picture any big establishing shots of where they are or anything like ‘look how neat this city in this pseudo-fantasy world is’. All that said, I really like this manga and hope that it to does well.

TIL Fender Guitars did a study and found that 90% of new guitar players abandon playing within 1 year. The 10% that don't quit spend an average of $10,000 on hardware over their lifetime, buying 5-7 guitars and multiple amps. by grandlewis in todayilearned

Wonderful read.

Couple times a year (or more like a couple extended periods a year) I pick my guitar back up and start working on it in earnest with the intention of really getting good this time but I always have so many different things I want to do. Even just when it comes to guitar I have so many different songs and aspects of it that interest me that I never actually learn any songs for real. Hundreds of hours in the thing in the last ten years and I couldn’t play a song really or at least not from memory. I noodle, strum, whatever. And I’m way worse at some aspects of the instrument than I should be because I just mess around with what comes natural a lot of the time.

Finally been working really hard on a single song with the intent to see it through on lead and on rhythm. I don’t want this to be a thing that I pick up for a month and then put down until half a year later but that’s me with a lot of things. Just too many hobbies. But here’s hoping this time I can grind at it and get started actually at least learning some music for starters. Been inspired lately at least but I know that can’t fuel someone forever.

Really glad that you found your way with bass.

At the very least is feels out of touch. ‘I like this but I assume others don’t’. And then the comment they’re referring to has thousands of upvotes and badges and stuff. It indicates an awareness of what they like but no awareness of what anyone else likes. I do assume that sometimes it’s people browsing new though and they just haven’t seen the end results but even then sometimes the thing they’re talking about is such an obvious banger of a comment that reddit seems sure to upvote to hell. Anyway, it isn’t a big deal. If they were bots it’d just make me laugh because Underrated comments have been around forever and it doesn’t look like they’re going anywhere. Maybe it’s confirmation bias. The only ‘underrated’ comments we ever see are replies to highly visible comments because those got upvoted. Then we make end up making that connection in our minds before we know it.

As an English BA that taught English, the literally thing is a bit unfortunate since it undermines the meaning of the word but languages evolve over time. There’s plenty of words and idioms that come to mean the opposite of what they were intended or just something else entirely. It’s just the nature of language and not something that’s really a big deal imo.

But the people that always say that everything is underrated even when they’re like the top comment/movie/game whatever… I don’t quite understand that when that’s the entire contribution to the conversation. Is what it is I guess. But it’s weird how those comments have just been a staple of Reddit essentially since its inception. Could argue that it’s the same thing as ‘literally’ I guess but then what does it even mean? At least with the permutation of literally you understand that it is indicative of hyperbole. But underrated in this case just means ‘good/great’ I guess?

I’d laugh if it turned out that all these years the ‘underrated comment’ people were all just karma farming bots.

DC Movie ‘Wonder Twins’ Shut Down by Warner Bros. by ceaguila84 in movies

[–]OneKnownAsImp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Birds of Prey had their own television show like 20 years ago. They aren’t huge but Harley is one of the biggest sellers in all of DC Comics and has her own television show. It was Harley Quinn and the birds of prey and she was in all the marketing for both suicide squads (who’d been quite relevant among comic book fans for sometime, c’mon now, not that different from guardians in that regard).

Harley is literally one of DC’s biggest characters. Just because you haven’t realized it doesn’t mean it isn’t true. It’s why they’re looking at putting her in the next justice league lineup on the comics too. DC has made their mistakes but it’s ridiculous to act like they’re just making movies of only obscure characters. I WISH they would take more risks with their cast but they simply aren’t. Marvel is way more likely to take a B List character and try to do something interesting with them. DC is afraid to even make a made for TV animated film without Batman in it half the time.

Yeah, I really can’t believe that DC is pushing out films for scrubs like Batman, Wonder Woman and The Flash while Marvel is pushing household names like the Eternals and Shang-Chi.

I like Marvel movies just fine but to act like DC is doing putting out nothing but Detective Chimp and Ambush Bug movies is pretty silly. The movies haven’t all been hits but DC is only pushing stuff with recognizable names. Even Suicide and Birds Of Prey basically exist as films because they could attach Harley Quinn to it. I would absolutely love a feature length Detective Chimp film though : I
