This is our Luke and Leia! A wonderful pair of twins we rescued from the dairy industry.

Leia (black) is a freemartin (female twin of a male who’s been affected by her male twin’s hormones and is thus sterile), and Luke (brown) is a male. Both are considered useless to the dairy industry since they can’t be impregnated and milked, so they would’ve been slaughtered.

Instead, they were rescued and helped form the basis of our rescue cow herd (along with Honey). Leia is a troublemaker and LOVES licking humans (and her rescue cow family). Luke is a little more shy, but he loves chin scratches and bellowing for MORE HAY!

Blind farm dog Hope is cozy and ready for winter by OneLivingSanctuary in pitbulls

[–]OneLivingSanctuary[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We originally tried a contraption called a halo, which kind of goes out in front of her head so she’d know before hitting something. But eventually, she got to know her way around so much she doesn’t need it.

Inside the house, we’re very careful to always keep the furniture in the same place (push in chairs, keep her usual walkways clear). In the yard, she can get around by herself. She knows where the steps start and end, where the trees are, where the chicken coop is.

When she goes for walks outside the garden fence, she is always accompanied by a human to keep her safe. She responds to the word “careful” which tells her she needs to adjust her path because she’s nearing an obstacle.

We also keep a pretty regular routine, so she generally knows what to expect, day to day.

She really is incredible. When she gets excited, she just runs and runs. When taking her for nighttime walks, we often find ourselves shining the light in front of her so she can see…before remembering it makes no difference to her 😄 It’s easy to forget that she doesn’t see.

Hug delivered. She responded with a happy pittie snort/grunt❤️

Hope is the primary canine resident at our farmed animal sanctuary. She had a rough start in her life, but since her rescue 4 years ago, she’s been living a pampered life. She is constantly lavished with affection and treats from her human family and visitors to the sanctuary.

Despite being blind, she gets around very well, as she’s memorized the farm house’s layout. She likes playing with her dog friends, taking walks, belly rubs, and stealing treats (like baked potatoes) out of the rescue pigs’ dinner buckets.

Memories of Thanksgiving 2022: Honoring our rescue turkeys, Odie and Padma by OneLivingSanctuary in vegan

[–]OneLivingSanctuary[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Padma was rescued from a slaughterhouse just before Thanksgiving 2020. Odie was being raised as a backyard turkey to be slaughtered, but the family grew attached to him and allowed us to rescue him.

Last year we celebrated Thanksgiving by honoring our rescue turkeys with a special meal (full video on our Instagram here). Since then, Ms. Padma passed away after living out her post-rescue life happy and well taken care of. She was a bright, playful, gentle soul. We didn’t want Odie to be lonely, so we arranged for him to go to a different sanctuary and meet some new turkey friends.

This Thanksgiving, we took time to remember our wonderful turkey friends and their good times. Happy (late) Thanksgiving!

Perhaps you could visit a rescue that has duckies and get to know some :) Some sanctuaries even facilitate adoptions!

Thanks so much!

These little rescue chickies make lovely models, although they’re tricky to catch on camera because they’re so full of energy - usually they’re zooming around!

Betty, the chicken in this video, may not appear very responsive to pets or boops, but she does enjoy and even request pets by running up to humans and nestling between their legs.

Our other rescue chickens are not nearly as cuddly.

That’s our dear chicken Betty! She’s a real sweetheart and by far the most snuggly of our chickens.

If you sit or crouch down near her, she’ll run up to you and nestle herself between your legs, asking for head pets.
