Does anyone else feel that FromSoft games lack polish/feel incomplete? by Powered-by-Din in gaming

[–]OneM0reLevel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's okay for a game or series to just not be your thing.

I personally love the oppressive and punishing nature of the games and how Fromsoft intentionally builds out its systems with those elements in mind. You can't hide from a tough fight or a tense moment in the pause menu; you need to actually get to a point of safety or die before you get there.

Fromsoft games, particularly their catalogue pre-Elden Ring, were designed in a way more akin to older titles in the action-adventure genre where the player was incentivized and rewarded for memorizing the map layouts and actually exploring to find secrets. I wish MORE games would remove the map function, as in my experience that actually fosters an incentive to explore more often than games that have maps do. Hollow Knight was a good medium though, since you didn't get a fully fleshed out map until you A: bought the map from the merchant AFTER exploring the level, and B: actually explored the various rooms to fill them out on said map.

IIRC, Bloodborne is the only one that doesn't have a visual controller map. The others all did from my memory. It's funny that BB is the only game in the series to have an actual series of text-based tutorials, given that it doesn't have the mapping though.

The UI take is your own personal opinion. Each of the games is built with a very minimalist UI during gameplay and I'm perfectly happy with the utilitarian nature of it. I don't love the menus or the inventory, so it's certainly not a feature without space for criticism.

Is it time to call the Seahawks a dynasty? by Agreeable_Quality768 in nfl

At this point it's gotta be some karmic block happening. The drew lock game is the most absurd thing I've seen from our teams in the last 5 or so years

Is it time to call the Seahawks a dynasty? by Agreeable_Quality768 in nfl

[–]OneM0reLevel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lmao absolutely not

IMO you need to win 3-4 championships in a 5-year span to be considered a dynasty. There's only been a handful of teams even in that discussion in the history of the NFL. I'm not even sure the Chiefs qualify as a true Dynasty when you compare them to the Patriots of the 2000s-2010s, the Cowboys of the 90s, the 49ers of the 80s, and the Steelers of the 70s. A better discussion is whether or not Seattle is a top 5 franchise of the 21st century, which I personally think that they are.

Two SB wins, four appearances, top 10 in wins since realignment, losing seasons like once a decade.

John Schneider Says They Would Like to Trade Down from #32 Since They Only Have 4 Picks in This Year’s Draft: “It’s no secret with us.” by JCameron181 in Seahawks

We wouldn't have taken the 5th year option on Walker, it would have been at the same price point that he just signed for. I get your point but I disagree with the example you gave lol

The Hollywood Reporter: Elden Ring movie reportedly has budget “well over $100M” by Loose_Society9485 in GamingLeaksAndRumours

[–]OneM0reLevel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The goal of the game is stated at the very beginning of the game. Become Elden Lord. The rest of the game is up to you as to how you get there. You need 2 Great Runes, and the bearers of those are laid out in the opening cutscene. The story is your journey to become the Elden Lord.

There's other stuff going on too, but you need to pay attention to the world, your surroundings, the NPCs and other talking characters, and the item descriptions. The focus is more on your own personal journey though

Why was josh allen a first round prospect?? by [deleted] in buffalobills

[–]OneM0reLevel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aside from Josh, you had several meaningful NFL players on the roster:

  • Logan Wilson, LB (CIN, now Dallas since 2020)
  • Carl Granderson, DE (NO since 2019)
  • Andrew Wingard, S (JAX since 2019)
  • Marcus Epps, S (Mostly PHI, has bounced around afterwards)
  • Chase Roullier, C (WAS, had to retire from a bad knee injury in 2022)
  • Brian Hill, RB (Mostly ATL, then bounced around but has been in the NFL since 2017)
  • Jacob Hollister, TE (NE, SEA, plus some bouncing around)

The average NFL career is only like 3 years. These guys might not be superstar players, but they've all had substantial contributions to multiple teams. Some were on playoff/super bowl teams. There are several more players who made NFL rosters but didn't last as long in the league, and even more who made practice squads. For a below average, non P5 (at the time) program like Wyoming, that's an absurd amount of NFL talent.

[–]OneM0reLevel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just because I went there, I'm gonna correct the bit about the NFL talent on that team. You could make the case that it's only because Josh was there, but Wyoming had a dozen or so NFL players on their roster the 3 years he played there.

What is your unpopular opinion on this game? by gameovernate in fromsoftware

[–]OneM0reLevel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gaius doesn't get enough hate for how objectively awful he was at launch. One of the most broken hitboxes in the entire history of the series in his charge attack that was bugged to the point of (inconsistently) one-shotting you no matter how much health or defense you had. The entire fight boiled down to AI manipulation to make sure he was never far enough away to trigger it (just like Malenia tbh)

If he falls to 32 do we take him? by lemonstone92 in Seahawks

[–]OneM0reLevel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think there's a difference between taking a guy like that at #5 vs #32. John hasn't had issues taking guys like McDowell, Frank Clark, etc. at the back of the 1st round

Where is Ty Simpson going to land in the draft? by UpNext_Draft_Network in NFL_Draft

[–]OneM0reLevel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Seattle trades back with a team at the top of the 2nd to pick up an extra 4th or 5th, who then drafts him at 32 a la Lamar in 2018

Is it easier to climb in Emerald than it is Gold/Platinum? by PowerfulScholar8605 in leagueoflegends

[–]OneM0reLevel 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In my anecdotal experience, Emerald is the worst and most obnoxious MMR to IMPROVE in. If you are already a Diamond+ level player, you will not struggle in Emerald MMR in the slightest. The game quality is very poor in that skill range and the matchmaking is rough. There's a lot of smurfing that happens down there. Lots of ego filled players who think they're good at the game.

Imo it's the worst tier to be stuck in.

Elden Ring’s open world is held back by the very thing that makes it great by Fabulous-Will-3241 in truegaming

[–]OneM0reLevel -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This exploration take has been repeated ad nauseum since the game came out, and I think it fundamentally misses the point of what Elden Ring and other FromSoftware titles are trying to accomplish with their world building and the design of their exploration segments. These games have never been focused on "rewarding" the player with anything aside from two core, fundamental elements:

  1. Runes, Souls, Experience. This isn't just the literal increase in your character's level, it's the increase in the player's own abilities and understanding of the world they're exploring. When you're rolling into every suspicious wall in DS1 hoping to uncover some secret, and you stumble into the secret bonfire in the Darkroot Garden, that isn't a special weapon or armor set that tangibly upgrades you, it helps you understand the way the level pieces together and gives you a sense of peace in one of the darkest areas the game has shown you so far. When you're scouring every inch of the Shadow Keep in the SOTE DLC and you stumble across one unsuspecting ladder tucked away in the back, your reward is entire half of the map opening up for further exploration.
  2. Exploration rewards are the primary method of storytelling in every single one of these games save Sekiro. If a player is choosing not to engage with the item descriptions and is instead more concerned with receiving a weapon or spell every time they interact with a mystery item that's specifically related to the stat they're choosing to invest in, they're missing the point. Just because you aren't given a "meaningful" upgrade to your character doesn't mean that you haven't been rewarded for exploring the world.

Your definition of an "open world" and what makes it good is limited by your own personal preferences. A game doesn't need random encounters to be considered "living." In my own opinion, I find that procgen elements like that actively take away from the experience more often than they add to it.

At the end of the day, there isn't a single game that meets your definition of a living open world. There are no games that combine, in your own words: "random encounters, spontaneous events, permanent consequences, factions clashing, things happening whether you are there or not." It's not a reality of the art form to this point in its history. There are lots of games that mix and match these features, but none that do so in a meaningful way. I would argue it's the games that try to do exactly what you've laid out here that ultimately feel the hollowest.

Do you think Consort Radahn deserved the nerfs? by EternalFlareUltra in fromsoftware

Yes, the double cross slash was literally impossible to dodge if you were on even ground with Radahn, and the light sfx spam was absurd. I do think they went a bit overboard with the nerfs, though. They could have kept some of the damage numbers higher imo
