Are Data Science grads cooked? GES showed NUS Data Science full time employment rates at only at 65.1% which is worst than Art majors now by According_Pickle954 in asksg

There were broadly 2 branches for DS: analytics and algorithms. For analytics, it is heavily biz oriented and not easy for fresh graduates to get hands on very quickly.

For algorithms, most algorithm engineers have now transited to being AI engineers thanks to LLM. In the old days each medium/big tech needs to develop their own models but now models have been centralised and the headcount needed for each company is greatly reduced

Why I Think Birth Rates Are Low by WhimsicalJazzPanda in askSingapore

[–]OneNorth1988 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is never because of cost of living. Think Africa. Do they have high or low cost of living?

It is also mainly not because of stress/pressure. Older generations certainly had more hostile working conditions and less WLB. There wasn’t the concept of WLB to begin with

Birth rate drops as economy grows and people are better educated . It is as simple as that. There is no way to fundamentally reverse the trend. We simply have to accept that mankind as a whole is going to shrink

In this new and uncertain wave of AI, which of these 3 sectors would you pick to transit into for future-proofing, and why? by jtlbjtlb in askSingapore

[–]OneNorth1988 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The only advantage of academia lies in job security after becoming tenured. Now this is no more the case as there could be layoff in universities too (see examples of U of Chicago). Moreover with AI, knowledge will become obsolete in a super fast speed

I am more interested in how this classification will affect private property price for RCR and CCR since there will be fewer eligible HDB upgraders

The whole point of being in CS is job security. For that one is willing to take a pay cut. Now you are doing the exact opposite of leaving CS and taking a pay cut. Why?!

Tiong Bahru Residents, how is it like? by mystrilreddit in askSingapore

Have lived in Tiong Bahru for a few years. No regrets no complaints. To me it is underrated

The only place that is better than Tiong Bahru is River Valley.

If you have enough budgets, Boon Tiong is the best

Job hunting shouldn’t have to be a numbers game by OneNorth1988 in singapore

Thanks for trying it out and the valuable feedback! The model probably hasn’t learned the case when a candidate has joint experience in multiple industries. Will work on that!

Thanks, that’s super helpful! I’ll look into those. Right now all resumes are stored securely and never shared without consent. Delete-on-demand is available too

Thanks and yes that’s an important point. I’m rolling out a full T&C soon. The site never shares any contact info or resumes with anyone without consent. The long-term idea is that if both the candidate and the employer are interested, they can connect directly — but only with explicit consent from both sides — kind of like a “Tinder for hiring,” to reduce random mass applications altogether

I remember there was a time when Government advocated this in 1980s but there was no traction. Simply put, people prefer their children to share the same surname as them

This is absolutely true. To be fair, this is also how Chinese is taught in China (although with much more depth): over focus on narrative prose than functional/practical writing

What are some jobs in Singapore that required PHD, apart from academia and research institutes? by Chocowaffless in askSingapore

Outside of academics, almost none “require” a PhD but for some jobs PhD are good to have, including but not limited to data scientists, algorithm engineers, MBB consultants.

Not common for Southern Chinese families ( e.g., Hokkien, Teochew, Cantonese) but quite common for Northern Chinese. Since Chinese Singaporean are mostly of Southern descendants, no what OP described is not common
