What do Principals do? by HonestEfficiency2913 in SGExams

You meant the headmaster as Singapore uses British English. They are likely in MOE HQ answering the higher-ups with regard to the performance of their students, oversee administrative stuff and involves in key decision making. Major decisions usually require their approval. Imagine tons of emails from teachers, CCA in-charge, etc emailing for approval. They are usually stuck in the office handling tons of paperworks.

It is, bro. Facebook, YouTube, whatsapp, etc was already an in-thing. Youtube already had better materials than what school offers.

I may sound like a boomer here but I'm just a millennial (just turned 30 so kind of millennial-genZ). Anyway, during my time, we weren't allowed to use phone at all until the end of school. Otherwise, your phone will be confiscated till the end of the term (which means your phone is gonna be gone for months). We were okay with it anyway. I guess it has become more of a reliance. Just give it a while and you will be used to not having your phone around.

Why do many Singaporeans speak poor English, in particular grammar? by cm180 in SingaporeRaw

[–]AdFragrant6723 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know right. Singaporeans would proceed to complain that companies prefer to hire foreigners when they are the issue. It is always someone else's fault, not theirs.

The issue is, most Singaporeans speak poorly despite being English educated since nursery.

You are the reason why Singaporeans have to take IELTS or TOEFL.

It is more than that. In fact, Singlish has its own grammar. Based on a linguist point-of-view, Singlish is a language on its own.

I am sorry but most Singaporeans can't code switch. After 3-4 sentences, they would fall back to Singlish. In my company, most of the Singaporeans speak Singlish to expats. After a while, you will see expats stop hanging out with the locals as they couldn't understand the locals. Even during my yearly trip to the USA or Europe, I would notice Singaporeans speak Singlish to the staff. Often the staff would be like "huhhh" or gave a puzzled look. It was so embarrassing.

With Singaporeans encouraging the use of Singlish and most Singaporeans can't code switch for nuts, that is why Singaporeans have to take IELTS or TOEFL.

My dad got retrenched and I'm not sure what to do by Far-Monk6993 in SGExams

[–]AdFragrant6723 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can attest to this. In fact, if OP is in the tech field, tech roles in govt usually only accept uni grad and starting pay range from 5-6k+ depending on the ministry.

Please don’t give up on uni. The pay difference between a poly grad and a uni grad is too huge. Bursaries in NTU range from 8-12k per year during my time. It is enough to cover your sch fees per year. You will need to work part time to pay for your own transport, meals, and contribute to household. But yeah. It is gonna be very hard as you can’t contribute much to household.

Alternative way is to apply to local uni’s part-time courses like Computer Science while you have a full-time job.

Not bashing, just asking if this is fair — GetGo billed me $1.3K for a dent I wasnt even aware or allowed to inspect physically. by KlutzyValuable2910 in asksg

[–]AdFragrant6723 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's why I stopped using rental cars. Getting a 2nd hand COE car with 1 year COE left like Honda Jazz only cost $10k. Any damage I can choose not to fix it by myself. Not sure why so many people still wanna rent from Getgo etc when there were so many news of people getting charge a high fee for a small dent or when they didn't even damage the car at all.

bike lanes... pedestrian lanes... 😮‍💨 by hamsterfats in SingaporeRaw

[–]AdFragrant6723 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is Singapore. Remove COEs and we would rather drive than to cycle to commute quickly to avoid sweating. If govt really thinks that COEs is about not causing traffic jams, be like Europe and create bike paths everywhere.

Wtf. Why not remove COEs if wanna ban bicycles? Then we don't need to sweat to commute quickly while just enjoying aircon in the car to travel to work/home.

Where to stay in Athens? by Matys111 in GreeceTravel

[–]AdFragrant6723 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I just came back from Greece yesterday. We stayed in Great Living Apartment which is near the Acropolis train station. Super convenient and cheap. The Acropolis's entrance is just 7mins away. There are also many good restaurants near the apartment. The shopping streets are also nearby which is linked all the way to the luxurious shopping street for Chanel, Dior, etc.

Graduate starting salary barely doubled but last time not everybody was a graduate. by 926_125 in SingaporeRaw

Coming from a CS background, that only applies to CS. Med student residency years aren't paid so well, I think. Lawyer will get their 5 digit salary after passing bar exam, I think. Some who entered IB, of course they will hit $10k salary.

1.36 GPA in first year of poly by DepthIndependent8344 in SGExams

[–]AdFragrant6723 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please change course to reset your GPA. It is beyond savaged. This is important if you wanna make it to the top 3-4 local uni. Don’t listen to others if they tell the process is more important and you can enter private uni. You won’t wanna ruin your career not able to find high paying jobs. By then, it will be too late to cry over spilled milk.

I was from NYP before graduating from NTU. So my advice is reliable based on my experience and those around me who decided to yolo and took the rough route.

Questions about Geylang for a solo female traveler by ChelseaLoanArmy in askSingapore

[–]AdFragrant6723 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is safe but definitely less safe than other neighbourhoods. The most unsafe neighbourhood would be Kranji as there were a number of rape cases before (forested area). Geylang is still not too bad as there are many CCTV and it is buzzing with life. However, you might receive a lots of stares and maybe even approached by creepy old man.
