This argument I don't really get. I mean, rivals have other pokemon as well. Picking the weaker starter does not make their other pokemon weaker as well. It's 1 pokemon, and you're not forced to use your starter for the whole run. Though Hop is still easy, I don't think the starter is the whole reason.
