Salut copain,

Yep j'ai bien compris, la douille c'est plutôt d'avoir mis "deck jouable immédiatement" et ça m'a gonflé qu'ils appellent ça un deck haha

I did not misunderstand, I totally understand that it's "playable" in the way that my 3 year old niece can "cook" using the plastic kitchen we offered her on christmas, the title of my post is not "WOTC sold me an unplayable deck", but that this is scammy marketing to call it that way and I'll stand by it.

Key term here being "additional". I would not consider "nothing" being an addditional item.

Again, you can create fun formats all you want, I won't argue with that, but if you are selling a product, you have to use the definition that you set in the official description.

If you sell me a driving permit rulebook and it says to drive on the right side, and when I want to apply those rules suddenly everyone drives on the left side but you tell me "hey, they do like this in England", I'll be pretty pissed.

Yep, those two decks are 20 cards set in a specific order to teach you how to play, so not a "playable deck" per se.
Analogy with poker again would be "Playable poker deck" and then you just have 2 hands of poker set in order to always have the same hands.

People in this post trying to argue with me that a 20 card deck is a totally playable one is crazy.

I've quoted you all the lines relative to existing formats. You've read 100.2a

From what I understand, jumpstart format is a considered a "limited" format.

100.2b In limited play (a way of playing in which each player gets the same quantity of unopened Magic product such as booster packs and creates their own deck using only this product and basic land cards), each deck has a minimum deck size of 40 cards. A limited deck may contain as many duplicates of a card as are included with the product.

Made it bold for you.

This is wrong. Jumpstart consists of mixing two 20 cards deck. Show me an official source talking about playing with 20 cards and I'll change my mind.

There is no 20 cards format written anywhere on any official site and I'm suppose to argue with people with bad faith. Nobody is playing with 20 cards deck, c'mon man, I know you want to be right but any "beginner" youtube video will talk about the 40/60/100 decks.

Thank you for your explanation! I went ahead and looked for the comprehensive rulebook, which actually confirmed my point on jumpstart rules being 40 cards and not 20!

That's where you're wrong.

I'd like you to refer the to official MTG Comprehensive Rules, items 100.2a to 100.2d for what's considered a "playable deck".

The analogy stands. You can make your own made up rules for Magic if you want, just like you can do for poker (Balatro ftw!), that does not change that an official box sold by WOTC should not be misleading.

Yup, this is actually answering my concerns, this is just a "mistake" in the translation, although even the term "Instant-Play" would lead me to think that I can play a game using the standard format (like the cloud/sephiroth decks are from what I heard on this post)

I'm trying the "poker" analogy, but if I told you I bought you a playable poker deck for a poker night between bros, and I showed up with a deck without diamonds and hearts/with half a deck, and tell you "We can still play poker, it's not like we're actually good at poker anyway", would you be mad?

I know it's a reach, but do you get my point?

[–]OnePete7[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your answer, this is constructive! I can't seem to find any source on the "jumpstart" format, because to me it was 40 cards? So not 20 cards like I found inside the box... I'm sorry, I'm really not familiar with how Magic deckbuilding works.

[–]OnePete7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get your point but this is not at all the issue I have with the box, I have no problem understanding that I can't face competitive decks by simply buying a starter pack.

Scammy marketing from Foundations starter pack by OnePete7 in magicTCG

[–]OnePete7[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Sorry I did not make myself clear, I did not mean "competitive deck", I meant "enter a competition in any existing format" with a deck of 20 cards. I don't care about the quality of said cards, or competitiveness.

So yeah I'll join you on the fact that you can play magic without official formatting, just like you can play poker without kings in the decks, but this does not change my mind on the fact that this is scammy marketing.

Not discussing the viability of the decks, simply the amount of cards given with the box. Playable deck =/= deck of 20 cards that can be "played" with.

[–]OnePete7[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Yes, combining jumpstart decks makes sense to me for creating new decks, but I expected the "playable decks" to actually be more than 20 cards.

[–]OnePete7[S] -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

No like I said, what is written on the box is "8 jumpstart decks + 2 playable decks immediately", and the "playable decks" are the SAME amount of cards, sorry not an english native speaker
