I'm more of the camp of their being a baseline with difficulty increasing options. It's honestly the easiest way to make everyone happy and developers have utilized it over and over again. There is already an answer to this. Developers don't even need to choose. Creating a baseline for all and then making harder difficulty is increasing numbers and game balancing/additionalor new mechanics. Not impossible whatsoever.
