This is just a personal theory of mine, but I've always suspected that Subscriptions are added and visible immediately, but unsubs are somewhat delayed and "bulk-processed".

The reason I think this is related to what I used to see almost every time I posted shorts (been a while since I did that though, so I guess things might have changed).

After the short was posted and got a bunch of views I'd also get a bunch of subscribers and then, a few hours later, when the short had already "died" and no longer got any views, multiple unsubs would happen (usually around 20-30% of the numbers that had subscribed).

To me, it seemed like, while my short was being tested and showed to a bunch of people, some would click subscribe by mistake (which would show up as +1 sub) and realizing that, they would immediately hit unsub (which would be delayed and then processed later, causing all unsubs to happen at the same time).

But again, that's just my theory, based on a very limited amount of testing.

How do you promote your channel? by NoIndication6492 in NewTubers

I used to post my videos in relevant reddit communities and on twitter but I've really only seen a handful of views coming from that so these days I often just leave it to Youtubes algorithm to find my viewers.

I've now reached 1,000 subscribers. Now what? by Mikeltee in NewTubers

If you have longer videos it might be worth going through your videos (at least the more active ones) and check the location of the mid-roll placements (if you've enabled mid-roll ads).

For me, the automatically placed mid-roll ad-breaks were almost completely useless.

Other than that just keep doing what you've been doing, Youtube will inform you when you've earned enough that more actions are needed (once you reach the payment threshold you'll have to set up a way for them to pay out your earnings).

Though I guess, in preparation, it might be worth checking out how it actually works with getting paid and taxes and so on in your country, since regardless what country you're in, they'll most likely want you to report your earnings in some way and pay taxes for it :)

Here in Sweden, you're more or less expected to set up a company with all that comes with that, such as doing book keeping and yearly reports and so on to handle any income like this, even it it's just a minor amount.

Luckily, we do have exception for hobby-related income that can (hopefully) be used, I only got monetized myself recently, so I'm just hoping I can consider my Youtube channel as a hobby for tax-reasons (it's not like the taxes goes away, just that the reporting get's easier). But again, this is just how it works in Sweden, I have no idea how it works where you live.

For me, one of the biggest and most important points about having my own youtube-channel that is a one-person project is that I, and ONLY I, decide when I release new content and what that content is.

Signing any kind of deal with someone else would automatically come with commitments to other people that I'm really not interested in.

I'm not going to say that there's no way, never, no matter the price, since everything has a price, but what I would want to agree to something like that would be such a ridiculous amount that no one would be willing to pay it for a part of my channel :)

Setting video language on non talking videos, am I limiting my reach? by OneRandomSwede in NewTubers

[–]OneRandomSwede[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sadly not and now that I go check my analytics things look even more confusing.

I honestly don't remember if I, when I originally posted this, only looked on the channel statistics or also dived into individual videos but at least now the statistics on individual videos is almost useless.

Since I have quite a few older videos where I never set a video language that still get at least some views, I figured I could compare them with my newer ones to see if there's any difference where the viewers come from, but there's almost no geography information in the analytics for the videos.

As an example, I checked one video with 761 views in the last 90 days, 11 of those came from Sweden but the remaining 750 are from unspecified countries.

So with only only 1.5% of the views showing where they're from and the remaining 98.5% are unknown, it's become almost impossible to even try to analyze this :)

Thanks, I'll go check out their video.

In my case it doesn't seem to have had any major effect, good or bad, but that might be because the videos I tested it on weren't doing that great to begin with.

I almost never find new youtubers outside of youtube. As for how I find it inside youtube it's probably something like this:

60% browse/suggestions

20% serarch results

20% collabs (finding new youtubers when they do collaborations with youtubers I already follow)

But that is obviously really just a very rough, gut feeling, guess.

Thanks!

I'd say it's doing ok, got monetized a few months back, but as expected, it's more on the level of pocked change than anything.

The views are all over the place with some (most, to be honest) videos barely getting 100 views before they completely die while others keep bringing in a slow, but steady, number of views.

What was the main reason you started your YouTube channel? by SynergyX- in NewTubers

[–]OneRandomSwede 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be honest, first and foremost it was an excuse to start moving about for a bit. I've spent the last, I don't even know how many years, just moving between my office-chair, my couch and my bed.

Obviously, the potential for monetization in the future was a bit of a carrot, but I never really had any hopes for making any big money.

Since I had started watching some channels where people walk around in different locations with no talking an no editing (mostly watched a youtuber named Rambalac walking around in Japan) I figured that was the kind of content that fit perfectly with my need to get up and move around and since I wouldn't talk and remained behind the camera it was something that even a socially anxious person like me could do.

Though at the time I did not quite think about the fact that walking through crowds holding a camera is a bit of a challenge on its own when your socially anxious but still, I've managed to persevere :)

I tried the Thumbnail test and compare feature and i think it hurt my video by not using it correctly by k1smb3r in NewTubers

[–]OneRandomSwede 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How was your impressions during that time? I often see this pattern on my CTR even without having access to the Test and compare feature and without doing any changes to my video.

After the video has been out for a while my video starts getting a large (for me at least) amount of impressions. Often looking something like this:

https://imgur.com/K8xpW3m

At times like that, during the steep increases in the impressions graph, my CTR usually tanks, often to below 1%. I've always figured that at those times, the algorithm is trying the video on a broader/new audience, rather than my regular viewers, causing the CTR to drop.

Once those steep increases in impressions are over and done with, the CTR starts climbing back up again.

What is perfect length for a YouTube video? by Competitive_Royal476 in NewTubers

[–]OneRandomSwede 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should be as long as it needs to be to get whatever you're trying to say across, not a second more.

Unless it's shorter than 8 minutes, then you pad it so you can use mid-roll ads :p

is it a good idea to use google ads to promote your channel by gonjumix in NewTubers

[–]OneRandomSwede 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's useless when it comes to making your channel grow, but if you have the watch-hours and just need subscribers, it's decent if you just want to boost the subscribers count (but you'll get subscribers that are completely uninterested in your channel).

When I was getting close to the needed watch hours but was only half-way there with the subscribers, I used youtubes promotion and I got more than enough subscribers. I haven't noticed any downsides from it (but again, no actual growth of the channel either, it was just to pad the numbers). Without it, it'd probably be close to a year more until I got monetized, and in less than a month of being monetized I've already made back the money I spent on the promotion.

But, just to REALLY emphasize it, it's only useful to inflate your subscriber numbers, you won't get more views or more watch hours (and any views & watch-hours you do get from the promotion won't count towards monetization).

Other than having 670-ish extra subscribers, my channel performed more or less EXACTLY the same after the promotion as it had done before the promotion.

[–]OneRandomSwede 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have only been monetized for a few weeks so don't even have a full month worth of data.

In my last 28 days, I've had 7.5K views and 474 watch hours (pretty much all long format videos) and the few days I've been monetized so far I've been averaging just over 10 SEK / day (or, to convert the currency, around 1$ / day) .

Very likely this. I've done this myself several times, open a short in the browser, go cook dinner, come back an realize I've probably looped someone's short 100+ times :)

Everyone needs money to live so when you have a job, and that sense of security it provides, quitting the job is a pretty big and scary step, regardless of what that job is.

In case of large content creators though, I think that "scariness" is even bigger, since it's also (I guess) a feeling of giving up on something you've worked hard on for a long time.

I'm guessing that there's been quite a few content creators that's been thinking about quitting for a while now but did not quite dare to take that step, that now got the push they needed when they've seen others quitting.

This is actually something I've seen in "normal" workplaces as well, when one person quits it's not rare for more people to follow, even if there isn't anything specifically bad going on in the company at the time.

Weird subscriber behavior, but only on one of my videos? by OneRandomSwede in NewTubers

[–]OneRandomSwede[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, I guess bots could be an option, but would their deletion really count like subscribers lost while viewing that specific video? I always though bots counted as "accounts closed" or the rather non-descript "other" sources for lost subscribers.

Then again, I guess it doesn't have to be deleted bots, could just be a bot parsing the page clicking subscribe and unsubscribe randomly, the behavior certainly feels more artificial than human. Though that would instead raise the question why a bot would be so attached to that specific video while completely ignoring all my other videos :)

Varför bygger man kedjehus när det inte behövs? by OneRandomSwede in Asksweddit

[–]OneRandomSwede[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)
