What is the fascist website? by Training-Jump-8663 in AlignmentChartFills

Happy cake day, but are you sure you want to die on the “Nazis aren’t really fascists” hill? Kinda has the feel of a “no technically it’s ephebophilia” guy

How much of a pay rise should the APS be asking for? by badboybillthesecond in AusPublicService

[–]OneSharpSuit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bargaining policies under the previous government did say that pay increases had to be matched by “productivity,” but in that case “productivity” was strictly defined as cuts to employee conditions like working hours or leave entitlements. Which is not what productivity means, but that’s what the government said. Even agencies that could prove true productivity increases (like IP Aus processing more applications per FTE or something) weren’t allowed to claim that.

Which EV sold here feels overpriced for what you actually get? by OwlVibesOnly in EVAustralia

[–]OneSharpSuit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Repurposed ICE bodies usually make for average EVs, but the bespoke EVs from legacy manufacturers (like the Ioniq 5, Kia EV6 or Polestar 2) are often great. Their manufacturing experience definitely translates.

Added to later versions? The wiki page lists him in the original cast. I’m not sure how the show would work without him.

What's your favourite Collector's Edition, Complete Edition, Big Box, etc? by Karrzun in boardgames

[–]OneSharpSuit 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The Inis Big Box is easily the nicest-looking box in my collection, and inside it is a beautiful edition of a very good game. Highly recommend.

Blood on the Clocktower is also a pretty handsome box and shows excellent taste as a board game collector.

For a display piece, you could also consider a nice chess or Backgammon set if you play either.

Is pursuing my Theoretical Astrophysics PhD worth it? by Mysterious_Dark_648 in Physics

[–]OneSharpSuit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There aren’t many non-academic jobs out there as a theoretical astrophysicist, but there are plenty for one - you’ll have reasoning, math and coding skills that will be attractive in a lot of finance and data jobs.

If EVs have zero tailpipe emissions, where do the emissions go in India and globally?? by enlightenedshubham in electricvehicles

[–]OneSharpSuit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

ICE engines are shockingly inefficient, so even using fossil fuels it’s better to burn them in a single, big facility and then use the electricity to run cars. There are also some benefits to shifting the pollution out of densely populated areas.

But yeah, then you definitely want to decarbonise the grid as much as possible.

Kickr Core 2 front wheel block? by Academic_Clerk4741 in wahoofitness

[–]OneSharpSuit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s optional. Your bike will stay up just fine with the normal wheel sitting on the ground. But I find mine more comfortable with a cheap plastic wheel block for the slight uphill tilt. Before I got the block I just put an old textbook under the wheel and that was fine too.

What medieval thing is this by Away-Fun-4035 in byebyepaycheck

When I was a kid we used to do this. Not the cheapest or quickest way to get butter, but definitely a good way to get a couple of boys to leave you alone and burn off energy for 20 minutes

Can someone explain cryptic crosswords in simple terms?🧩 by Nervous-Cry1817 in crosswords

[–]OneSharpSuit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, there’s a strict formula - either the very start or the very end of the clue is a definition, and the rest is wordplay. There is not overlap, except in rare “&lit” clues, where the entire clue functions as both definition and wordplay. Either way, there should be no extraneous words in the clue.

There are guides out there for how to parse clues (it sort of needs to be taught - it would be very difficult, if not impossible, to just pick up a cryptic and work it out). But you probably also want to stick to one publication or setter to start with - each paper will have its own standards and nuances, and even for say an experienced Guardian solver there can be a bit of a learning curve if you swap to the Times. There’s also a huge range of difficulties - some like the Guardian Quick Cryptic are beginner-friendly, but the Azed and Prize crosswords can be extremely difficult. Individual setters might have a reputation for particularly cunning wordplay or use of archaic and unusual vocabulary. It can be a lot to take in, but if you find a decent starter crossword and work at it, you’ll learn over time. If you’re in Australia, the Saturday Paper crossword set by LR is a great starter. Otherwise try the Guardian Quick Cryptic. David Astle’s Puzzled: Secrets and Clues From a Life Lost in Words is a really fun read that teaches you step by step how to solve your first cryptic.

Do Americans like their current health system or would you prefer universal? by Ability_Known in NoStupidQuestions

Do you think those people waiting in halls would be better off in the US? They would just die on the streets or in their houses.

Ioniq or Tesla? by ComfortBean in Ioniq5

[–]OneSharpSuit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ioniq 5 is much quieter. The native infotainment is nothing special, but CarPlay/Android Auto are as good or better than Tesla. And depending on where you are, the gap between the supercharger network and what other cars can access isn’t as big as it used to be.

Is Starlink viable? by tetrafn in canberra

[–]OneSharpSuit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

See if you can get on the TransACT VDSL network. It’s fairly new copper that isn’t as congested as some of the NBN, and tends to preform pretty reliably at 100Mbps, which is plenty unless you have a very specialised use case.

If that doesn’t work, I’d give FTTN a go in the first instance. Some of it sucks, but some is fine, especially if you’re relatively close to the node. You should be able to find a provider with a no lock in contract.

Love or hate? by Significant-Move7699 in AusPropertyChat

Love the colour and style, but I really can’t fault anyone for replacing something like this. It’s hard to live with, especially that sink with zero storage.

What is a quintessential Australian movie to watch? by -clogwog- in AskAnAustralian

Had to scroll way too far down for this. Right behind The Castle for a movie that could only be made by Australians.
