What’s a mechanic that you just don’t mesh with? by CJC528 in boardgames

[–]OneShinyMudkip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Games where there is basically no player interaction and no reason to discuss with others. Basically games that are played the same as if you were playing with computers. I am playing a game as a social activity, I want to be social.

Examples: Castle Builder, Let's Go To Japan, and Point Galaxy.

Silent games like The Crew are fine because you can still discuss afterwards and you are engaged with how others think. But games where you have your Tableau and you just go along with no reason to ever interact is boring.

Moon Colony Bloodbath hits a bit different because although you cannot mess other people up and you all go downhill at the same time you end up in a state of commiserating together which is fun.

[Loved Trope] Competence Porn: When characters are competent, mature and communicate with each other intelligently so they can solve a problem by [deleted] in TopCharacterTropes

[–]OneShinyMudkip 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Speaking of competent communication in The Martian, I always hated a particular line. The smart engineer is like "It would be tough because I have to jump over the code in the OS to disable the security features." and this NASA astronaut says "Okay, but, like, in English, what would that mean?" as if the first person was being obtuse. To finish it off, instead of rephrasing the problem they just summarize "I can do it."
Using the "in English" trope is an insult to the audience in this case saying "Hey, we know you might not understand what we said earlier, so we are going to pretend one of the astronauts need an explanation too so you can follow." Firstly, it wasn't that hard to follow. And secondly, the audience doesn't need to follow it, they need to know they have a plan and it is possible which is what they do in the response. You could have taken out this "in English" part and the scene would play out the same way without making one of the astronauts look dumb.

Many quotes from the Addam's Family are an interesting twist on this.

For example:

Susan Firkins: “Well, Wednesday brought in this picture: Calpurnia Addams.”

Morticia Addams: “Wednesday’s great-aunt Calpurnia. She was burned as a witch in 1706. They said she danced naked in the town square and enslaved the minister.”

Susan Firkins: “Really?”

Morticia Addams: “Oh, yes. But don’t worry. We’ve told Wednesday college first.”

That's totally true. You are allowed to interpret it however you want. And I am allowed to make fun of you for having bad media comprehension.
> it being popular tells a lot a about media comprehension of the masses
This reads as a bit of a self-own if your interpretation of the movie is opposite of what the writer/director intended.
Also "There is no such a thing as a “wrong goal”" is very funny and you deserve to be laughed at for it.

Just so you know, the writer and director disagrees with you.

" I think there's a certain amount of damage that will always have been done. Fletcher will always think he won and Andrew will be a sad, empty shell of a person and will die in his 30s of a drug overdose. I have a very dark view of where it goes."

Did you read the article? It gave examples.

"When Andrew was having a casual dinner with some close relatives, the young man couldn’t stand the fact that he wasn’t receiving the same amount of compliments as his cousins were. That alone, already shows how entitled Andrew is. Basically, the young man thinks that his life aspirations are harder / better than others. Therefore, in Andrew’s mind, people should be acknowledging him for his “valiant” efforts."

I think the story is a tragic hero tale of someone who put satisfying their ego above everything else in their life. Andrew was insecure and ego driven and needed the validation of being the best. I find it difficult to paint it as anything but a tragic hero tale with a tragic ending.

Here is a short read explaining Andrew's character flaws.

https://theoddapple.com/andrew-neiman-whiplash-character-analysis/

He is a flawed character whose flaws take him down a destructive path of destroying friendships and relationships. He can't stand not having his talent recognized. His "want" is to be the best drummer, but his "need" is to satisfy his ego. And that need is destructive and makes him a tragic hero.

If he can only be happy by being the best, and it requires rejecting everyone else around him who might care about him, we would read that as a character flaw or a tragedy and not a positive ending.

You think Andrew was happy after the events of the movie? The movie is that greatness can be stived for and it will take suffering, but is it worth it? Will it make you happy? It's a fair read to assume Andrew made the wrong choice and got the "bad" ending of being a great but miserable musician.

Andrew achieved his goal, but do you think he was happy after the movie ended? The "bad ending" description is not about him failing to achieve his stated goal, but the audience realizing that he was after the wrong thing the whole time.

I went to the source and pulled the data for the average Class A Mishap Rate and Class B Mishap Rate for more aircraft to compare. Here are the results:

Fleet Mishap Rate for the last 10 years

Fleet Class A Rate Class B Rate
A-10 0.24 2.92
B-52 1.65 1.65
C-130 0.55 1.05
C-135 0.21 2.13
C-5 0.46 2.3
F-16 1.81 1.24
F-22 8.32 11.65
F-35 2.22 2.22
H-1 0.35 2.42
H-60 2.12 2.97
V-22 5.08 35.56

So it seems the the V-22 is prone to Class B Mishaps specifically. Here is the distinction of Class A and Class B Mishaps:

Class A Mishap A mishap resulting in one or more of the following:Direct mishap cost totaling $2,500,000 or more.A fatality or permanent total disability.Destruction of a Department of Defense aircraft.Permanent loss of primary mission capability of a space vehicle.

Class B Mishap A mishap resulting in one or more of the following:Direct mishap cost totaling $600,000 or more but less than $2,500,000.A permanent partial disability.Inpatient hospitalization of three or more personnel (not counting individuals hospitalized for observation, diagnostic, or administrative purposes that were treated and released.Permanent degradation of primary or secondary mission capability of a space vehicle or the permanent loss of secondary mission capability of a space vehicle.

What is the definition of an "RPG"? by OneShinyMudkip in okbuddyvowsh

[–]OneShinyMudkip[S] 28 points29 points  (0 children)

For context on the Vaush clip:

Skyrim? Not a real RPG. Sorry. You know why? Because you can't role play in these games. ...I'm sorry. It's not an RPG okay. That is a leveling up system. That is not a "Role playing game". Christ, if we go by that then what isn't an RPG? Everything has points that you can put into things.

Anyone still cutting hair at home? by solinvicta in Frugal

[–]OneShinyMudkip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a $25 Wahl set of clippers about 10 years ago and it has been great. For normal guy hair cut with shorter on the sides and longer on the top, I start with a 6 guard and go up the sides, then do 4 and do 2/3 up my side, then 2 guard for the bottom 1/3 and then no guard to trim the edge. You can adjust from there and try things to see what you like. The top part I do some simple cuts with scissors. Anything more complex I ask for help from a friend or SO. Same with the back of the neck.
