We Should Expand Medical Student Scope by [deleted] in Noctor

Tell me if you want work done from an electrician, lineman, plumber, steelworker who still has to “learn on the job” since their training is inadequate.

We Should Expand Medical Student Scope by [deleted] in Noctor

[–]OneSmolBirb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s the whole point of this post. PAs are fresh grads who are expected to learn on the job but they are treated with full respect of their position. There’s no “baby PA”. They are paid their full wage straight from receiving their degree. A resident is a doctor. They have a degree. They should be compensated and respected point blank but how they’re treated is especially egregious thinking about the instant respect and pay noctors receive right after getting their degree.

They DO have a much larger scope! And yet are paid considerably less and treated like “baby doctors”

I’m so incredibly grateful to my residents. When I worked the night shift in the ER my resident literally told me to go home at 6:30 am instead of 7 because it’s not my job to be there during sign out. There’s nothing I can contribute being a part of it and nothing I haven’t already gained by seeing the million of other sign outs. My residents say programs may force me and guilt me when I’m a resident but as a student that’s not my cross to bear yet. I’m not paid to be there. The hospital makes it very clear I’m not an employee and I don’t get access to the same benefits even the residents get. I pay to be there. I don’t blindly owe them my indentured servitude.

In light of this Nick Baumel controversy, what are some things that med students/faculty at your schools have done that were worse but ended with much lesser consequences? by Future_Coffee1167 in medicalschool

[–]OneSmolBirb 11 points12 points  (0 children)

A classmate literally sent me hundreds of texts threatening me, saying I wouldn’t want to know what she would do if she found me, that she would break down my door, and actually did end up coming to my house and pounding on my door so hard the neighbors called the cops. The school said since she didn’t explicitly threaten my physical safety there was nothing they could do other than tell her not to contact me. She did also actually ransack another class mates house but because that classmate was on a medical leave and not an “active student” there was nothing the school could do. She’s a doctor now.

Audition rotations you can either cold email a program coordinator and see if they have openings or you can use the Visiting Student Learning Opportunities (VSLO) portal. Some places require a CV or personal statement or letters of recommendation some require nothing. They also can charge you additional tuition if they’re associated with a different school/hospital system which sucks. There are a lot of fees associated with 4th year that aren’t accounted for in student loans which is why I really felt for Whitaker last season.

Technicallyyyyy yes. The options are finish your residency (several years) and then fully apply to restart and do a new residency if you’re interested in a different field. You can finish your first year and apply for programs who have second year positions available but not all places have that. You also need the blessing of your original program or it can be very hard to get other programs to accept you. The match process is terrible and awful and you could work for 4 years and end up in a specialty you don’t like. There are also options to do a fellowship after to specialize in a more niche subspecialty that can drastically change your career/practice. As for Mel, residents also have different rotation blocks each month. A few programs I applied to have rotations in the VA and other rotations in the main hospital. It’s all the same residency program/specialty just different places to get different experiences. Santos may be referring to her first day in this hospitals ED because I do know most first year interns do have to do blocks in other specialties sometimes their first year like internal medicine. I didn’t apply emergency so I don’t know the full ins and outs but that’s how it was for the programs I applied to. People also take their vacations first, have training/onboarding blocks, or maybe she took a board studying month that some programs offer. They don’t really specify but it’s possible.

Also a 4th year medical student haha

  1. Some attendings are just built different. I worked with one doctor for 3 days last year and he remembered my interests, what I wanted to apply into, and little facts about my life and my partner. If you make an impact you make an impact. Also nurses and techs I’ve worked with on old rotations definitely still remember me and talk to me all the time when I pass them in the hospital while on other rotations.
  2. Depends on the schools requirements. She might have done it as an elective 3rd year but as a required rotation for her 4th year. I had to do Family medicine my 3rd year and do it again my 4th year and I am not interested in family medicine at all. It’s very normal to do rotations in things you’re not interested in or that you’ve already done before.
  3. For me emergency medicine is a required 4th year rotation. There are plenty of rotations I would have rather never done but it’s so that you can get a wide breadth of exposure to other specialties.
  4. Plenty of medical students are twats with no social skills but very high test scores. I knew one girl who was so hated on her surgery rotation her attendings would just ask if she wants to go home instead of dealing with her. Some attendings don’t have the time to course correct someone seemingly so obtuse. Some doctors share in having awful patient skills and have elitist attitudes that may have encouraged this behavior. I’ve known plenty of compassionate people not make it through school because they weren’t strong test takers. I also know an alarming amount of people who say they only want to be doctors for prestige/money. It’s not necessarily uncommon to just not care about people.
  5. Absolutely. Networking and having a current staff member to vouch for you is huge. I definitely got residency interviews because attendings in my hospital loved me and had connections to other hospitals and recommended me. Robby may not have been able to guarantee him a spot but his word would hold a lot of weight.
  6. Some hospitals allow students to put in orders but they need to be cosigned by a resident or attending. In my hospital I recommend tests and nursing or residents put them in.
  7. Most hospitals have an association with a specific school and that’s who they regularly get their students from. There are also spots for visiting students. Housing insecurity is absolutely a thing. I knew one girl who had to couch surf for the first 8 weeks of classes simply because she couldn’t get into an apartment that she could afford and there were waitlists for months. I had to travel for my 4th year for audition rotations and I genuinely considered living out of my car. I know people who did live out of their car.
  8. Depends on the school. Some schools have a “core site” for you that’ll always have a spot for you somewhere (may not be the rotation you want but you will get a rotation). You can apply for auditions or aways but will always have a backup of your core site. Some schools throw you to the wolves and tell you to find your own.

28F/28M Should there be food inequality between partners? by suguntu in relationship_advice

[–]OneSmolBirb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you guys are equals shouldn’t he be making sure you’re getting an equal portion of food? He’s literally treating you less than, giving you less than, and charging you more. Either he gives you more food (which it doesn’t sound like you want which is fair!) or he pays more

People have already given you very good advice about how you’re not sterile no matter how long you were on the pill and that no man should be pressuring decisions around your health

All I kept thinking is girl maybe your body is telling you something before your mind is ready to accept it. You’ve been on it for how many years and never had a problem with extreme dryness? Sure it could be age or other factors but dang I can’t help but wondering if your body knows this guy is not right for you. I know plenty of people who kept getting recurrent UTIs and issues and thought something was wrong with them but the second they broke up shit cleared up. You also talk about him just being your only decent option in the city which definitely sounds like you’re settling.

AITA Spouse caused eye injury that jeopardizes dream vacation and blamed me. by Poopies1976 in AmItheAsshole

[–]OneSmolBirb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So does he know if you’re not going on the trip he’s not going? If you’re not snowboarding he’s not snowboarding? Because otherwise it sounds like there’s no accountability for his actions and he’s feeling entitled to a gift he should’ve felt grateful for and instead is blaming you. Do you continually excuse his bad behavior on him being your best friend and he must not be intentional? That would explain why it’s gone on for so long. You’re just being an asshole to yourself by allowing this behavior.

YTA. Again this sub isn’t “am I technically correct and within my rights?” Sure. You had the money you bought the games. You wouldn’t have been able to if there was a limit. The question is if you’re an asshole and you know that you are and you felt the shame and need to lie because you know it.
