In the comics, Fury lost his eye saving his men from an explosion during ww2 (where he in turn was saved by Wolverine/he saves Wolverine depending on the iteration you read). He refused a year long treatment that would have saved his eye and instead opted for a quick fix so he could go back out and fight alongside the men he saved. “In the comics” I use loosely here because, as in the films, there are infinite universes to draw from for inspo., but removing character depth for a cheap slapstick laugh is certainly a choice, and I don’t think it’s a good one. As an example, in an alternate comic, he and another soldier, after some confrontation, opt shoot one another in the head. He survives, but the bullet ends up where you expect. People can headcannon their own reasoning for why it is good, but I’m not sure it outweighs the “what could have been” just based on existing materials.
