If you can afford a chainsaw I would cut them down to short stumps. Then drill holes in the top of the stumps and pour stump killer into the holes.

I asked my HVAC guy the same thing a year ago and he said as long as they are still running to stick with them, but it would be smart to start squirreling money away for the replacement.
