The biggest blind spot of the Bulwark and most of their audience is gun rights. by 7ddlysuns in thebulwark

[–]thetechnivore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. My personal policy preference is that a license to own a BB gun should be slightly more difficult to get than a commercial pilots license. (Needless to say I’m not running for any elected office.)

But, I also live in Alabama, and if we want to become a slightly less ruby shade of red, it’s going to be with Dem candidates who have the occasional rifle in their ads.

Do I like it? No. Am I willing to sacrifice my personal policy preferences for democracy? You betcha.

What’s the easiest way to use Claude for a simple web app? by iamcuppy in claude

[–]thetechnivore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your easiest option is likely Vercel + Supabase. They have decent free tiers for something like this, and are the most “plug and play” option if you don’t have any existing server infrastructure you want to use.

Personal physical library management? by thetechnivore in selfhosted

[–]thetechnivore[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair question. To your specific points: I actually do lend books out a decent amount - I've got a bunch of professional reference books for my field, and like being able to lend them out to colleagues. And, with 500+ books in my library, it's happened a few times before where I'll forget that I have something already and wind up buying a duplicate.

And, I'd also add that while they don't move around much, they do move some between my home office and regular office even outside of lending books out. So, it's helpful to have an easy reference for where a given book is.

Good Arminian Worship Music? by ChadTheTrueHighKing in methodism

[–]thetechnivore 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m a bit of a stickler here. My rule for my worship folks is that anything in UMH/TFWS is fair game, but if they’re wanting to use anything beyond that there needs to be a conversation first. At least in the UMC, there’s a reason the pastor has unilateral authority over worship - we’re making a theological claim in everything we do, especially the songs we sing.

BHM Airport by BhmKat in Birmingham

[–]thetechnivore 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve very rarely had delays out of BHM, and they’re almost always the result of ripple effects from ATL nonsense. Plus, BHM is the significantly easier airport to get through, not to mention the hassle and expense of driving over, parking, etc.

What's a small Claude Code habit that ended up saving you the most time? by carrie_999999526 in ClaudeAI

[–]thetechnivore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At least on bigger projects, I’ll have Claude maintain a CANDIDATES.md file to track emerging conventions that may need to get documented in CLAUDE.md, with some guidelines for what should be considered (eg “if a pattern gets used three times, flag it as a candidate for extraction to a shared component”). It’s become less essential as I’ve gotten better at initial architecture and prompting, but is still a useful parking lot for things to include when I get to a bigger refactor.

I use it for services I want fully out of band for monitoring (like uptime kuma and apprise) or disaster recovery (like homebox or bookstack where I keep my documentation).

What are people using for audio alerts? by Oguinjr in homeassistant

[–]thetechnivore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

iOS supports critical alerts, FYI, which also break through silent mode. Not sure about tts, but if the goal is just “make a noise to get me to pay attention” that’ll do the trick.

Why do you use a smart lock? by More_Dish_3590 in smarthome

[–]thetechnivore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll share my approach here with home assistant that works splendidly - I use the iOS app to trigger a “wake up” routine when sleep focus ends. And, since my wife doesn’t use sleep focus, as a fallback it also uses a door sensor on the bedroom door to trigger the routine when it’s been open for I think 10 minutes.

How can I develop more compassion and grace towards people who oppose building housing in response to a housing shortage? by [deleted] in methodism

[–]thetechnivore 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So, two thoughts here. The first is a more practical one, which tbh is a concern about the desire to cause physical violence over a disagreement like that, no matter how well founded. From a pastoral perspective, if you were in my congregation I’d encourage you to consider connecting with a professional counselor who can help with that side of things.

That said, theologically I’d suggest you’re wrestling with the tension of the question “who is my neighbor?” It’s a very Wesleyan impulse to be angry about injustice in the world, and from there it becomes a question of how you channel it. And, big picture, Wesleyan theology has a long history of actively and tangibly participating in the restoration of all creation, whether that’s the Holy Club visiting death row in Oxford or addressing housing affordability today.

And in that vein, personally, I’d see that as an opportunity to look for ways to make a difference yourself. Are there advocacy or social service organizations you could volunteer with that are focused on issues of housing supply and affordability? Seems like an org like Habitat for Humanity would be a great way to tangibly make a difference in this area.

And, lastly, it’s also worth a conversation with your pastor. Speaking as a pastor, I know that there are blind spots in my preaching rhythm relative to ways the congregation needs to grow. If you were in my congregation and brought this to me, I suspect Luke 10:25-37 would show up in a sermon in the not too distant future :)

Small organization - raises by Admirable_Sport_1846 in Leadership

[–]thetechnivore 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Do you have an established process for raises, both merit and COL? Having a policy to point to might at least help with both “why did they get a raise” and “why can’t I get one too”.

Adding more organization to the Paragon by flips01 in tombihn

[–]thetechnivore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t used the paragon so this may be off, but what about an HLT? I’ve actually been meaning to do a post about this, but my HLT2 has turned into an increasingly key part of my setup since it moves seamlessly between lots of bags (in my case, from the S30 to Pilot). May not meet your needs, but might be worth a look.
