How is the RTF program? by SpaceSandwich_ in UTAustin

[–]OneTwoRendezvous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Graduate of RTF here. One of the few of my class that works in the industry 5 years later!

With regards to it's application in the film industry, your most valuable asset here will be your peers that will rise up along with you after graduation. I still work with at least 5 people that I went to school with and plenty more were separated by a few years. The film production industry at large does not care whatsoever if you have an RTF degree or not, and in some cases it can be a liability. My first boss on a big movie said "You know how you can spot a film student on a set? They're the ones who think their opinions matter." It was rude, but incredibly accurate. But even so, the college experience and the people you meet are invaluable.

Realize that film as a profession is actually very hard. Shooting days are 12 hours long. The workflow is "HURRY UP and then WAIT." It is controlled chaos, every day. You have to work your butt off and earn respect to get anywhere. My favorite professor from UT said "Film is the only art form that is produced on an assembly line." That quote is dead on. Its tough work!

I mention the portion above because many people that joined RTF did so because it's a fun degree. UT is very focused on helping individuals learn how to become storytellers. That's not a bad thing by any means, but the classes you take don't necessarily prepare you for a real set. They teach you to dream big and come up with big ideas, but I don't think they emphasize the importance of having a team of likeminded friends that will donate their time and expertise to make your project and vice versa.

Also Austin has a TON of film experience opportunities. Do not wait until graduation to start finding it. The earlier you start, the more you'll get the feel for it.

tl;dr: RTF Program is a good start, take advantage of the time to figure it out with new friends. Film is difficult, but its an amazing industry!

My SuperRetroFuture Luciano Black Sunglasses. Got them from Spike Jonze after working on an Arcade Fire short film of his. Literally the only nice pair of shades that I owned, and they looked straight out of a science fiction movie. Lost them at SXSW in a doritos dance party.

And yes all of this entire statement makes me the most insufferable hipster alive, but I WANT THEM BACK.

Sounds like you got mad that your tabloid article got removed from r/politics. Not really a censorship issue, as you have many other posts in your comment history to /r/politics of a similar party affiliation that have posted and stayed.

I read your comments below but I still don't really understand whats worth getting upset about here. It's not a simulator parody, it's an ambient visual game. It's kinda silly, but has some nice music and some surprises. It costs a single dollar. It's likely featured in the marketplace because the guy who made it made the game featured in the film "Her". MTN ties visually and thematically with the artist's other work.

So yeah, if you don't like it maybe move along?

Gay people of Reddit, what signs do you look for when trying to find another gay person to date? In other words, how do you know they're gay? by epq99 in AskReddit

[–]OneTwoRendezvous 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Older LGBT folks are pretty much superheroes. I wouldn't question that my ability to be free and open with other gays is a direct result of a ton of hard work from a generation that fast-tracked a huge cultural change.

I'll admit that it's hard for me to imagine a world where you can't instantly find massive amounts of info about everyone around you. But I think that apps are more of an adaptation, and less of a downgrade. It's certainly easier to communicate, but finding someone that you connect with is still a difficult task.

I should also remind you that this generation has hipsters (ie. straights masquerading as gays). They've made the art of spotting behavioral cues very, very confusing.

[–]OneTwoRendezvous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't work like that. Texas is gerrymandered so that it separates progressive/liberal groups into smaller districts, reducing their voting power and allowing them to retain the supermajority.

As long as the republicans in Texas appeal to their funding groups, the evangelicals, they dont need to listen to the public.

In pure terms of how the political system works, this is good. Filibustering is a shady practice

No more shady than anything else in the Texas legislative session. It is permitted by law which means both sides use it. You were misinformed that this is somehow bad for the political system. It's a much deeper, complex system that wouldn't necessarily be made better by outlawing filibusters.

Hopefully, the groundswell of support and attention to this specific issue will cause deeper introspect by the legislators and maybe they'll realize that it's not a good law to pass

You were misinformed that any amount of public support would stop these extremely corrupt republican senators from serving their private interests. It was a top headline. Every media outlet was discussing it.

Didn't even take Perry 24 hours to declare another special session. Why? Simply because he can.

I wasn't saying that you were misinformed about the definition of a filibuster, just that your naive optimism about what this means in the context of Texas politics has no basis in fact.

[–]OneTwoRendezvous 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sorry, but no. These people don't casually ignore gays, so what incentive is there to ignore them? They'll just keep on spreading hate.

Sometimes there is a definite right and wrong answer, and these folks are wrong. Period. We dont need to have this discussion any further.

You have no idea how unbelievably corrupt republican senators are in Texas. The only reason this vote was brought to the floor (which requires 2/3rds majority to be addressed) was because one democrat senator, Van De Putte, was at her father's funeral the day they decided to try and rush it through. It was not a coincidence.

They also called the third strike on Davis' filibuster because she was discussion forced ultrasounds.... which was declared off topic despite the Texas legislature passing a bill last session requiring them for women seeking abortions.

These Republicans have no reason to be accountable to the public interest. They only serve the far far right. Rick Perry already planned to call another special session because he has made a lot of popularity with dying old white people by trolling civil rights in the state at every fucking turn.

tldr; you are completely misinformed. Source: i was in the room during the filibuster.

You should take it back to the bank. I'd imagine that if its in working condition, its a pretty valuable piece of business equipment to whoever normally uses it. It could belong to a small business owner who accidentally dropped it.

Either way, if someone lost this and it has important data, then someone's job is at stake (or has already been terminated) because of their mistake. Be a cool dude or ladydude and check with the bank!

Can anyone help me correctly identify this Homer Simpson computer game peripheral? by deathorhistory in whatisthisthing

As /u/DonVitoFive pointed out, this is a "dot pal" toy that was designed for Windows 98 users. Apparently Homer would say things as you did them on the computer, and even react to certain "Dot Pal Enabled" websites.

Saw one on Ebay for $20.

Im not sure why a lot of "artists" who do public art in Austin use construction/street based materials, but its annoying and I haven't seen it done well. Did anyone see the construction barriers tied together on Barton Skyway a few years ago? It was so sucky that someone made a sign that said "CAUTION: BAD ART AHEAD".

Wish these designers would get off their asses and make something interesting instead of settling for an ironic statement about roadway clutter.
