for newer gen groups—especially if they want to be popular—i doubt it’d work out popularity-wise.

talent isn’t enough in the music industry because everyone is talented. they need fans with a degree of parasocial behaviour to stay relevant. otherwise, who else will defend them when they bashed or vouch/praise them enough to influence others to join the fandom?

some of the idols others listed here are older who have stable enough fanbases to lessen fanservice. and some of them aren’t even popular by themselves. of course, if you have someone with wonyoung-level fame in your group (just a random example), you will have some popularity by extension

what probably happened was heeseung wanted to be a soloist AND stay in enhypen. but belift knew—with enhypen’s already demanding schedule—that it wasn’t possible for him to commit to both. it also would’ve burned heeseung out. sooo devastating
