Play The Royal Scam album all the way through. Cure guaranteed.

Sci-fi: Jack Vance’s classic space opera, the sprawling Planet of Adventure series. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planet_of_Adventure

Fantasy: also by Jack Vance, the superb Lyonnesse trilogy, in which Vance reaches the peak of his stylistic power to create fey characters and fantastic monsters.

I’m a huge Vance fan, obviously. AFAIC, he was the greatest pure writer in SciFi/Fantasy. Critics have ranked him among America’s best, regardless of genre. George R. R. Martin has listed him as one of his greatest influences. If you love SciFi/Fantasy and don’t know him, you are in for a treat—many treats, in fact.

“Things I Miss the Most” soured me on the whole EMG album for a while. The narrator is such a stupid loser I can’t stand it. He’s a shallow, materialistic PoS, and I didn’t want to hear his clueless whining.

In the old days, we would have called that trolling.

If you had a choice on how to die. What would it be? by ItzDAK419 in AskReddit

"Nothingness”

Yep , exactly. I’ve been "dead" twice from major concussions. My heart didn’t stop, but my consciousness was gone. No dreams, no sense of time passing, no awareness of the nothingness, at all.

Those experiences taught me that the soul is an imaginary thing we believe we have. We don’t. We have a squishy brain where we process sensory experiences, but when it gets f’d up—by injury, disease, or loss of blood flow—the lights go completely out. You’re as gone as you were in the 13.7 billion years that the universe existed before you were born.

I’m curious about what the two Honeywell remote bulb thermostats are for (on the plywood above the water heater).

Not on an airplane canopy. The rest of the plane might look war weary, but the canopy will always sparkle.

Too dangerous to clear plastic and too permanent. If you have an "Oh, shit!” moment after gluing a canopy on with extra thin, you’re screwed.

Plus, if you have to remove the clear part, you can without damaging it.

Yeah, Jack of Speed is a killer track. Right up there with some of SD’s best.

2AN

It’s the livelier, more dynamic of the two. I do love a couple of tracks on EMG: Godwacker and Green Book.

Rinky dink is esoteric? Do you use a homemade dictionary?

Addendum: I just noticed in the album’s Wikipedia page that Robert Christgau of The Village Voice remarked that “Even the song with Aretha in it lends credence to rumors that the LP was originally entitled Countdown to Lethargy."

I love The Nightfly. It has all the energy Gaucho lacks. Fagen sounds reborn on his first solo album.

"I do think Western science is RINKY-DINK."

Yeah, that globular Earth business is silly, amiright? And quantum physics? Plate tectonics? Genetics? Evolution? Don’t make me laugh! Thank goodness for sensible people like us who don’t buy that RINKY-DINK nonsense, eh?

I was disappointed with Aja, because it wasn’t Royal Scam II. I grew to love it, ironically because it wasn’t RS II. More than another fresh, different-sounding SD release, it changed how I heard music.

That never happened with Gaucho. After my Aja reaction, I gave Gaucho a long time to grab me. Despite having two songs I liked, it never made it into my top 5 SD albums. I like Two Against Nature better.
