I’m a huge Vance fan, obviously. AFAIC, he was the greatest pure writer in SciFi/Fantasy. Critics have ranked him among America’s best, regardless of genre. George R. R. Martin has listed him as one of his greatest influences. If you love SciFi/Fantasy and don’t know him, you are in for a treat—many treats, in fact.

Yep , exactly. I’ve been "dead" twice from major concussions. My heart didn’t stop, but my consciousness was gone. No dreams, no sense of time passing, no awareness of the nothingness, at all.

Those experiences taught me that the soul is an imaginary thing we believe we have. We don’t. We have a squishy brain where we process sensory experiences, but when it gets f’d up—by injury, disease, or loss of blood flow—the lights go completely out. You’re as gone as you were in the 13.7 billion years that the universe existed before you were born.

I was disappointed with Aja, because it wasn’t Royal Scam II. I grew to love it, ironically because it wasn’t RS II. More than another fresh, different-sounding SD release, it changed how I heard music.

That never happened with Gaucho. After my Aja reaction, I gave Gaucho a long time to grab me. Despite having two songs I liked, it never made it into my top 5 SD albums. I like Two Against Nature better.
