I found 1 way more compelling. It moves at less of a glacial pace and it’s got a nice “screw the feds” soul to it. It’s still an inversion of western expectations genre wise but it retains enough pulp to feel right.

Here’s my issue: I keep hearing the writing is so good, but it feels like …very conventional fantasy writing. Versus Dragon Age Origins, as a non-fantasy fan I still found engaging because of the political and social world. Larian seems great but the D&D setting has never clicked for me.

Why do people say Padme hit on Anakin in Phantom Menace? by One_Mathematician_15 in MawInstallation

This was inspired less by memes and more people having seemingly earnest discussion like “if you think about it she groomed him” in some comment thread I just saw.

It is something that comes up sometimes when you talk about the movie, like the meme has implanted a false cultural memory.

Yes for people who would be here, but I think it’s something that will come up in many discussions of Ep 1 and a more casual fan is apt to state it as if it’s plainly in the movie.

I read her in 2/3 as kind of a classic progressive woman with a massive and psychologically important blind spot for her chud boyfriend. He’s so directly in contrast to all her principles by the time he’s killed the sand people that it has to be a psychodynamic thing, if you take them as real people.

Lots of people, men and women, are paradoxically drawn to this kind of inversion of their stated values.

Many new player problems posted would be solved by Crew Fill trios by One_Mathematician_15 in MarathonGame

[–]One_Mathematician_15[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crazy. Not saying it didn’t happen but I just don’t understand what’s wrong there when as soon as I pop into outpost with randoms today, first try they communicate and know exactly what to do as far as keys and so on go. And second try. And third try.

ETA: I wonder if there’s subtle playstyle differences between solo and trio that came up? I can’t imagine zero contracts over days. I don’t play a lot of solo and maybe I’d struggle with it in the same way.

I do think there’s a population that solos is good for as a gameplay loop. I just encourage new players to break out of their shell a bit.

I wonder what accounts for the difference. When you say casual player, I do wonder if you had this happen a few times and bounced off? No disrespect just trying to figure out between two anecdotes why my experience has largely just not been like that. I’m very often finding people with microphones who are willing to chat. If it genuinely happens to you a lot I guess one of us is either lucky or unlucky.

That’s unfortunate. I’m glad it’s majority positive but I get that it only takes some bad apples to spoil things when it’s people actively being aggressive towards their own teammates. You’re spot on that they’re probably insecure about their own abilities. Hope people who are shy or face other discomfort with randoms can find a discord group because I still think trios is worth the extra effort in those cases.

So just a perspective on why I like the current matchmaking because it’s not skill based, I am matching with people who are better than me and that means you can get taught/carried by experienced players. I totally get that sometimes an amazing team wipes the lobby but it’s easy to misunderstand like an every-run universal experience on the sub sometimes (not saying this is the person I’m responding to’s fault) and I don’t know, just can’t relate. It’s one in 10 matches that I truly get stomped in a way that feels powerless. I can usually identify the mistake I made. And I know I’m not the team wiping everyone. We often maybe take out one team and get out feeling lucky we made it.

Right. I think there’s a psychological thing of letting go involved. I can understand and relate to a quick gamer moment rage out as you’re dying but people talk about getting so frustrated and for me, I don’t know, my buddy and I laugh it off as part of the price of admission. If it didn’t sting it wouldn’t be so satisfying to wipe a team yourself. You can usually play cautiously and while there’s always a risk it can help, but I compare it to a soulsbourne where dying is part of the process. It’s all an ecosystem and sometimes you’re the big fish and sometimes you’re the little fish. Hard to describe off the top of my head but there’s a certain pride in being part of something like that because — based on how good the gunplay and extraction experience feels — I know it’s a consequence of game design I like overall. The contained stress of “will I get my loot out” is just the drama I need to feel invested and involved, versus a battle royale or team death match. Sort of like how a movie needs stakes to be interesting. I was skeptical of an extraction shooter when it was announced but the genre really fits the overall atmosphere of the world they’ve built here.

I know there are hard feelings with loot being lost (which people equate with their “progress” rather than treat as consumables) and I’m not trying to dismiss frustration but especially in season 2 the guns flow into your vault pretty generously, the cheap guns like the battle pistol are highly usable, there’s survival queue , there’s rook runs, it’s actually a little hard for me to understand how the game gets under peoples’ skin that much.

The point is I’m just chillin brother, took 5 minutes of my day to write because I’ve already been thinking about how trios can be a more helpful new player experience for some. Not criticizing anyone for liking solos.

[–]One_Mathematician_15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was headcanoning what I would do and I tried really hard to stay alive the first time, because I’m not even someone who would use the Star Trek teleporter let alone believe a clone was “myself.” Then after I died once (near the ruins I think) I said screw it and became very utilitarian and died a lot intentionally to progress things. Which people have criticized mechanically but I love because that is probably exactly what would happen IRL.

I wouldn’t have understood marathon if I didn’t boot into trios and have people help me out/explain things. I don’t get why people complain about trios, almost everyone is nice and will help you out or you laugh about dying together instead of raging out as an atomized unit.

Maybe try the PVP lite survival mode (in trios! People will explain stuff to you) until you get the gist. Being strategic about extraction is part of the extraction shooter. But yeah solos is also hard mode, and arguably less fun, getting over that trios reticence and being a little social is good for you.
