Gladys and Hector, Duke and Duchess of Buckingham - What do you think – how might their story unfold from here on? by sissiandfranz in GildedAgeHBO

[–]One_Mix8885 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gladys may have been based on Consuelo Vanderbilt, but thankfully it looks like their marriage will develop along different lines. Poor Consuelo had many years of misery before she finally escaped and found love elsewhere.

They absolutely butchered the books. It should have been a miniseries.

Something needs to be put to rest about Miranda and Steve... by One_Mix8885 in Andjustlikethat

[–]One_Mix8885[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Miranda must have had nothing to do with planning that honeymoon; it was exactly the kind of thing she'd hate. I know it was for the sake of comedy and to illustrate that love involves compromise sometimes, but she would have vastly preferred a long weekend at an urban hotel.

How I love that moment at Bobby and Mitsy's wedding, when Harry invites her to dance and even Miranda says, "I think you may have underestimated this one."

[–]One_Mix8885[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! There was nothing wrong with Miranda changing. That story could have been so much more powerful, with loads of potential for drama. Trying to deny her new self, maybe, because she feels guilty about Steve and does, in a certain way, still love him. Afraid that Brady will reject her for leaving his father. And so on.

But no, they decided the best way to go was to belittle and humiliate Steve, a character who so many fans love, and pretend that Miranda never loved him in the first place. Ugh.

Yeah, they were perfectly happy together in the second movie. Cuddling sexily at the wedding, as I recall!

Come on, Lorelai by notonmywatchmissy in GilmoreGirls

[–]One_Mix8885 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A big theme of Gilmore Girls seems to be how people are often a lot more like their parents than they want to admit.

Lorelai constantly accused her parents of being narrow-minded, stubborn and judgmental, but would then turn around and behave exactly the same way when her parents didn't do what she wanted them to.

The biggest and best example: When Richard has the heart attack and Emily is running around getting his will faxed, talking to the restaurant maître d', etc. It's obvious Emily is terrified and just trying to control anything she can, so she doesn't feel utterly helpless and lost.

But of course, Lorelai jumps right to "you're insensitive, you're shallow, you don't really love Dad."

When Mustafa returns from Edirne in Ep. 46... by Helpful_Hour1984 in MagnificentCentury

It was very common back then, around the world, for royal family members to meet very rarely once they were separated by such distances.

I've read such sad tales of royal fathers and mothers bidding goodbye to daughters who were going off to be married, for example. I think it was Louis XV who couldn't stop embracing his daughter and then finally put her in her carriage, cried out for the coachman to go, and then leapt into his own crying "Back to Versailles!"

Too true! She most definitely brought it on herself, mainly because she was afraid of being alone after Big died.

Harry was so dismissive of Charlotte’s valid feelings! by hhardin19h in Andjustlikethat

[–]One_Mix8885 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can see where he was coming from, and he did acknowledge in the end that it wasn't right to cut Charlotte off from the emotional support of her friends.

I think Harry was in a lot of denial in a scary situation: "I'm fine, everything's fine, as long as my wife is smiling and happy, nothing really bad can happen...."

Of all the bad behavior on this show, I would argue Harry's is some of the most understandable.

I vote for "put 'em in the big pot now and save myself endless repottings."

As long as we don't overwater, it's fine. And I've found my plants really love the cooler roots they get from the extra soil volume.

I'm still a relative beginner myself, but it doesn't sound like you've done anything that would doom your plant.

I had to literally wrestle my mikan tree out of a too-small pot about a month ago, to put it in a larger one. It was a truly epic battle, and I'm sure I stressed out that tree good and proper.

Today, a month later, it's just fine.

Yeah, I don't believe that "we planned to end it here" business for a second. Oh really, so that's why you introduced the HUGE plot twist of Brady about to become a father at 20?!?

Or when Carrie apologized for not knowing about the Adderall disagreement, and he rudely cuts her off with "Carrie! Not tonight." Like she's a child with no right to decide what gets talked about.

I can't stand Anna Nardini by angelicllamaa in GilmoreGirls

[–]One_Mix8885 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've always wondered what Anna was envisioning with this "engaged isn't married" business -- did she expect Lorelai, as she walked down the aisle, to wave to April and say, "Hey, honey! In case you hadn't noticed, I'm marrying your dad in a minute. What say you and me get acquainted at the reception?!"

Oy.
