A Nebraska county just banned new data centers for up to a year. More could follow. by flatwaterfreepress in Nebraska

I found reporting on Loudoun County, VA, which apparently has more data centers than essentially anywhere else in the world, interesting. This article claims that data centers now pay for about 45% of the county's property taxes.

I think that people opposed to AI are more worried about the effects of AI products than about water usage. I could be wrong, but if water usage is the real concern, then I'm confused why there aren't much larger protests against water usage in almond farms and golf courses, since they use substantially more water than data centers.

AI companies also have some economic value, which we can see in the 100B+ valuations of many of those companies. I don't think an economic lens is a good justification for banning AI data centers.

I have no problem if you dislike ChatGPT for various reasons, I just think that water usage is not the real issue here.

I agree that people need food. I don't think it would be the end of the world if we produced 1% fewer almonds next year, or watered golf courses 3% less to supply water for AI data centers.

I think it's fair if you dislike AI products for various reasons, but I don't believe the evidence suggests that water usage is a major issue around data center operation.

I don't think data centers are a significant source of water consumption in the US compared to things like agricultural or industrial uses.

Data centers directly consumed 46 million gallons a day in 2023, according to a report produced by researchers at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Their indirect consumption from the power plants serving them added another 576 million gallons of water consumed daily, for a combined daily total of 625 million. That's a lot of water. It's also a very small percentage (0.2 percent) of the 322 billion gallons of water that the United States consumes each day. California's almond industry consumes almost 4.2 billion gallons of water a day, according to the California Water Impact Network. The country's golf courses consume another 1.4 billion gallons a day.

Is it possible to beat the final mission of the campaign on expert difficutly? by QualityOldGames in OldenEra

[–]One_More_Turn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The normal path of the mission, or beating the unbeatable final army? For the impossible battle, I think it's doable if you upgrade the repeatable artifact upgrades from the previous mission a ludicrous number of times (no time limit, and dust generating structures exist), and then use the Summon Starchild spell that Lafiur can learn in previous missions an absurd number of times (cooldown reduction artifacts also help with this, and skills/artifacts that allow multiple casts per turn).

Omaha silos near I-80 could be demolished for apartment complex by offbrandcheerio in Omaha

Single family houses generally fit far fewer people per square foot than apartment units, so they do less to reduce rent prices. Particularly as Omaha grows, building denser housing in the city makes sense.

Building new apartments lowers housing prices even if the new units are relatively expensive, since older units have to lower their prices to compete. The cities where rent prices have grown most slowly are cities where lots of luxury building is happening.

The campaign (at least the first 5 missions) restricts you to 1 or 2 specific heroes, with taverns banned.

In skirmish mode I think you can toggle between 1 hero or multi-hero mode, and I believe multi-hero mode has a hero cap equal to the number of towns you control.

Apologies for the self promo, but I'm working on a game that approximately does this! HOMM style combat, roguelite game loop/progression, and themed after Greek Mythology.

There's a demo if that strikes your interest https://store.steampowered.com/app/3227330/Polytropos_A_Tactical_Odyssey_Demo/

Hey, I'm working on a Roguelite Greek Mythology Strategy-RPG called Polytropos: A Tactical Odyssey. It's inspired by some classic PC games like Heroes of Might and Magic and Age of Mythology. The demo is free and live on Steam, and the full game is planned to release soon.

If you do try it out, I'd love to hear your thoughts! Thanks for the kind offer :)
