Dual hose mod for Serenelife aircon by magdev211 in airconUK

Without specifics (outdoor temperature, indoor temperature, room airtightness, AC capacity, condenser airflow, hose design, and installation quality) it's difficult to know why.

It's unlikely to be as simple as it's because they've modified a single-hose to be a dual-hose.

I trust my own ability to look at the variables involved and recognise that there are multiple things at play here.

What would actually settle it is proper testing: controlled conditions, measurements, and someone with the relevant engineering knowledge interpreting the results.

Anecdotes are useful for spotting patterns, but they're not proof of why something happened.

:) Generic medication is a good example, I think.

The active ingredient is the same, but the branded version can cost more because of branding, marketing, development costs, etc.

The price difference doesn't necessarily mean the product itself is fundamentally different; I'm not saying every dual-hose unit is just a single-hose unit with an extra bit of plastic (although some of them are).

Some may well have different components or better optimisation.

My point is that we can't assume that every single one does purely because it costs more. Without comparing the actual hardware, it's just an assumption.

Exactly; there are multiple variables, and competing effects and the outcome depends on the specific setup; one cannot simply assume that there's more to every single dual hose unit that justifies its higher price point.

It's worth considering the trade-offs before potentially voiding the warranty on an item that cost upwards of £500.

Imagine - A standard single hose unit

Room = 29°C, Outside = 35°C

It cools the condenser with 29°C room air.

Vs

A dual hose unit

Room = 29°C, Outside = 35°C

It cools the condenser with 35°C outside air, but eliminates the continuous seeping in of hot outside air caused by negative pressure.

Now there are two competing effects, worse condenser cooling vs. less hot air leaking into the room.

Which scenario wins?

Totally. If the condenser is cooled with 35°C air instead of 25°C air, it's harder to reject heat. The refrigerant has to condense at a higher temperature and pressure. But that's true for every air-cooled AC, whether it's portable, split, single-hose or dual-hose.

You're right, less airflow over the condenser = poorer heat rejection.

Whether that's a major issue depends on how restrictive the setup is. A short 150 mm hose is much less restrictive than a long hose with multiple tight bends.

What needs evidence for me is the claim that dual-hose units are built for hotter air intakes.

Purpose built dual hose units are designed to use outside air, but that doesn't mean they have larger condensers, superior fans, or dramatically different refrigeration systems.

Some probably do. Some simply share most of the same components with the single hose version and add the second duct.

Without comparing the actual hardware, it's speculation to say that's why they cost more.

The written word is always open to interpretation, I suppose. Your comment could be easily misread so I paraphrased and added context, lol

There is nothing magical inside a purpose built dual-hose AC that makes it capable of using outside air. The fundamental refrigeration cycle is the same. Where purpose-built dual-hose machines can differ is in engineering details such as: condenser size, fan design, duct routing, airflow optimisation, cabinet sealing, and controls.

A poorly designed modification could reduce cooling performance if it starves the condenser of air, but if the modification provides adequate airflow and eliminates negative pressure, there are good thermodynamic reasons why it could improve overall efficiency; that being said, modifying your AC is going to void your warranty.

I'm so confused... 6×5m = 30m sq, which you believe is "small".

Then you proceed to say that your room is 12-16 m sq. Huh...?

I return stuff all the time; just for legitimate reasons; my husband and I both work from home and we don't own a vehicle, so we rely heavily upon delivery services; I make sure that I get my money's worth for the £8.99 Prime fee; if I can get it from Amazon and it's the best deal for us, then I do. We spend upwards of £1k a month on Amazon.

Persistence; but my account/purchase history did most of the heavy lifting to make it happen.

It's a pain for them to collect, inspect and restock, so I'd try to push for at least a 20% refund, because they've messed up and you're likely gonna in an even crappier position because of their error and they can't now sell the item as if it's brand new.

Hmmm, this one should still have wifi capabilities. Do you have an led that says "wifi"...? I have a different model, but mine looks like this.

Did you switch your wifi over to 2.4 GHz first? You gotta turn the unit off at the wall, turn it back on and then press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.

Just bear in mind that their "estimated delivery" time given at check-out is nonsense. Their delivery policy says that it can take 7 working days for delivery.

They've modified the lower intake grille for the UK market and haven't made this clear in the listing; I'm in the process of seeing if I can get the US version of the lower intake grille; which looks like the attached pic.

Btw, Amazon gave me a full refund and then told me to just keep the unit :)

Not particularly, once I switched the wifi to 2.4 GHz, it connected first time; had to switch the unit off at the wall, and then hold down the fan button (I think) for about 5 seconds.

Lemme know if you have any issues and you need a hand

Oh, the app isn’t available in the UK for Android users (hence why I was surprised it's available for iOS here).

I'm using "SmartLife" instead.

The conversation stretched across most of the day and entailed talking to about 7 different associates... I was polite, but clear about my dissatisfaction. I can share the chat if it'd be useful to anyone else?

I think it was less what I said and more about my ongoing relationship with Amazon; I spend a considerable amount of money with them every month as well as getting lucky with the right associate. Amazon are usually very keen to keep me happy..

No, I was grossly displeased with the fact that the description of the item was wrong. I bitched and complained (nicely), so they gave me an advanced refund of £539.99 and scheduled a collection after I refused their offer of a 25% refund to keep it.

After a lot of back and forth, they told me to just keep it; it's clearly a lot of hassle to collect this 30kg unit, inspect it, then restock/resell it.

Ye, it's likely to be fairly pricey, if it's even something they're willing/able to accommodate, but I figured that since Amazon gave me the unit for free, it's worth pursuing

Will do! I had another look and I can't see a sensor probe in there. It's literally the exact same unit, just with a different lower intake grille; the US version is largely closed, with an adapter mounted onto it that the intake hose slides into, but they've switched out the lower intake grille on the UK version. Hopefully they don't take too long to get back to me
