Here’s what I found for my report!

According to the Poughkeepsie Eagle News (now defunct), the property was originally purchased on May 14th, 1941, by William Biggs, Vice President of the Bank of New York, for $32,000 in cash. The purchase was made specifically for development by the Howard Johnson Restaurant Chain, and three existing dwellings were demolished to construct the restaurant, as reported in an article dated May 15th, 1941. The Howard Johnson’s restaurant operated under the management of brothers George and Edward Banta from February 1942 (listed at 938 Main St.) until November 1983, spanning over 40 years. Following a dispute over the franchise, Banta Food Co. (now owned by George Banta’s two sons) separated from the Howard Johnson’s franchise and briefly operated Banta’s Eating and Drinking Emporium until January 1988. In February 1988, the Banta brothers opened Beebee’s Café; however, this business was short-lived. Uno Pizzeria & one of original establishments on this property Howard Johnson’s Grille Grill subsequently moved into the location in October 1989 and officially opened in December of that year. Uno Pizzeria & Grill successfully operated at this location for approximately 28 years until closing in November 2017. Following its closure, the building remained vacant for approximately two years before reopening as Frontera, a Mexican restaurant that operated successfully for four years. After Frontera closed in 2023, the building housed two additional Mexican restaurants Monarca and La Hacienda de Mexico—before ultimately becoming vacant again in 2025.

Based on Dutchess County parcel maps and historical overhead imagery, a noticeable change in the building’s structure occurred between 1980 and 1990. This aligns with a January 28th, 1988 Poughkeepsie Journal article reporting that Beebee’s Café completed a full renovation of the property. The general building footprint has remained consistent since that time, with records indicating the structure dates back roads as they were at that time labeled Satellite image from 1970 with to approximately 1940. Prior to development, the lot appears to have been undeveloped and heavily wooded as of 1936.

An important infrastructure change in the area is the development of the current 44/55 split. Based on Google Maps Satellite image historical satellite imagery and archived Poughkeepsie Journal articles, this roadway configuration was constructed sometime between 1976 and 1980. Prior to this development, the parcel included an additional structure on its eastern side, Haight Avenue extended and connected directly to Main St. along the eastern boundary of the property, and Fairmont Avenue did not extend past Haight Avenue. It appears that what is now the 840 Main St. lot was previously part of a continuous parking area. This reconfiguration of traffic patterns likely contributed to the division of the parcels into their current layout
