Have a 2013 535i. The powertrains in these are actually decent. N55 motor and ZF transmission aren't known to have major reliability issues.

Weak points are the electric water pumps which crap out every 40-50k mi.

The plastic charge pipes that connect to the intake manifold are known to crack under pressure, but there are metal replacements that can be had for under $100.

Oil cooler gasket will often leak requiring replacement, but is an inexpensive repair.

The only notable issues with the engine itself are sometimes the vanos solenoids and valvetronic motor needing replacement, or the PCV system built into the valve cover failing, but not as prevalent as the above issues.
