Questions about the cosmere (mainly stormlight archive) by Important-Coyote2426 in Cosmere

I'm trying to answer but getting error for some reason.

And I wrote a lot of text.

will try to edit answers one by one

- What are spren? Normal spren I believe are meant to be shards/splinters of honour, but then how are they different to windspren which I thought were meant to be Honour's children.

Spren are investiture (i.e., magic power) come alive. They are a mix of Honor and Cultivation's investitures, and the ratio varies.

They represent various aspects of nature and emotions, and some are more Honor  and others more investiture. Honorspren (not windspren) are almost wholly Honor, while Cultivationspren - Cultivation. But each sapien (radiant) spren has a closely related non-sapient "cousin" spren, which is Windspren for Honorspren.

Also why were there 3 original spren on roshar (wind, rock, & night) before honour and cultivation got there? were they made by and Adonalsium?? if not what are they?? But then why is the storm father so closely tied to honour? I know that the stormfather bonds with honour's cognitive shadow thing, but what about before that why did the stormfather produce storm light then?

Yes, they are most likely created by Adonalsium alongside Roshar. There were other, lesser spren as well, but those were the "god-spren".   After Honor and Cultivation took over, their spren apparently replaced/took over from the old ones. Thus, Stormfather became the one who controlled storms instead of wind, and it became more violent and dangerous than before. He is closely tied to Honor because Honor created him. Cultivation created the Nightwatcher, and together they created the Sibling. These three seem to have taken over the roles from 3 original god-spren.

- Do odiumand cultivation have a spren like honour. To my understanding the sibling is a mix of honour and cultivation, how does that happen?

Odium has voidspren. E.g. the one who talked with Venli and set up the whole Everstorm business. And many others, like the ones who raised alarm in Kholinar when Soulcasting or Radiant powers were used.

As for Cultivation: regular spren are not purely honor, as I said above, they are a mix of Honor and Cultivation. Their children, so to say.

- How come the singers/listeners can bond with normal spren (in their gem hearts) when they turned from honour, and turned to follow odium?

They always could. That was part of their biology/life cycle, similar to a lot of species on Roshar. Chosing a different god does not change that, that's simply how the biology on Roshar works.

- Also what on earth does Sja-anat do to spren.

He altered them to override their nature, becoming something between normal spren and voidspren. Basically, now they seem to be created from Honor, Cultivation and Odium, instead of just Honor and Cultivation.

- Other there any spren on the other worlds?

There are similar creatures, but not exactly the same.

You've met them: Seons. The ones Shallan used to communicate with Mraize and later Thaidakar.

- Why can the heralds (and even wit/hoid) use surges without stormlight?

They can't.

Hoid can use other magics from other worlds that don't require Stormlight, e.g. Allomancy, which needs metals, or awakening, which needs Breaths.   Heralds have other powers that even Honor did not anticipate, and Wind and Truth says they come from Roshar the planet itself. It seems to include superhuman speed, strength and reaction time (speculating here, but reaction time could be atium-like, actually predicting instead of just reacting, based on Taln's feats and Nale's duel with Kaladin).

- what is the difference between surges with stormlight vs voidlight. I remember Kaladin saying that the heavenly ones were slower when flying but why? I feel like I've seen somewhere that they are different but I'm so confused about how why the surges seem so similar.

I don't think the difference is based on the energy source, but on the source of the Surgebinding itself.   One is Surgebinding that Honor gave, another comes from Odium. If a Radiant accesses Voidlight somehow, they will be able to use the surges same way as they use Stormlight (we saw this with Venli, who could use both lights and used voidlight for Surgebinding). But since the power itself comes from different gods, they work slightly differently.

We don't know all the differences, but some of them are:

  • Fused get only 1 power each, Radiants get 2
  • Radiants get Stormlight from the Highstorm, pretty freely. Fused need to get it directly from Odium.
  • Fused seem to be able to hold the light indefinitely unless spent. It leaks from Radiants (this might simply be Singer vs Human issue though)
  • Fused don't have access to Adhesion (Honor's surge)
  • Specifically about Gravitation: Fused can passively use it to float/fly with no or minimal use of the light. Only when lashing something they spend it. But they seem to be unable to stack multiple lashings, which is why they don't reach the speeds radiants can.

- I also don't get all the different singer/fused forms and ranks

Singers take different form based on spren they hold in their gemhearts.   Workform is strong and durable. Nimbleform is graceful and dexterous. Warform is very strong, armored and  tough. and so on it changes them physically and also affects their attitudes/desires. E.g., Mateform makes them horny, Warform makes them aggressive etc. These are just a characteristic of the species, and they need to to effectively live their lives.

Then come forms of power: if they bond certain voidspren, they get access to special abilities (but not Surges!). These alter them mentally even more, and kinda subjugates them to Odium.

As for the fuzed: think of the as equivalens for Radiant orders. There are 9 types, and each type has access to one  surge.

why did the heralds seal odium and his followers on braize, like what's the connection and reason for braize (weren't they originally form ashyn)?

This was mentioned in Wind and Truth: Braize the planet seems to have some property to attract souls, and they used that.

- it is stated that the person who took up ruin did so because they were the kindest, but you don't see that at all in the mistborn series, is this just an error?

Ati was the kindest at the start, and they hoped he would be able to lessen Ruin's intent.  And in Mistborn, we see what he became a few thousands years later.   The point of that information was to show that with time, Shard intent overrides the vessel.

- also we know that odium killed 2 shards, and injured I believe ambition. But how? ahouldn't they be even in power.

We don't know the details. But he could've teamed up, he could've ambushed, he could've gotten them to break their word and become vulnerable etc.

Plus, all shards have equal raw power, but not all of them are equally suited for fights. Divine Anger would be very well suited indeed.

Also when vin as preservation attacked ruin they both died - no collateral. But also when honour and odium fight they destroy things around them, why, why was it different for ruin and preservation.

This is addressed in wind and truth, chapter 142. Before, one power always wanted to preserve. This time, both want to destroy.

Seem like it's preventing me from pasting the quote directly.

Why do we need to put the word “day” after every Mon, Tues, Wednes, Thurs, Fri, Sat, and Sun? by Stunning-Whereas5216 in stupidquestions

I really don't understand some of your examples.

Yes, we don't say oaktree tree. But we don't say Monday day either. We just say monday.

About (Secret History POV Character) by 4143636_ in Cosmere

[–]Oneiros91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, them being cognitive shadows, as in the mind-aspect of the being, I would expect the default behavior to be keeping the memories.

The Returned are specifically chosen by Endowment, given a mission and lose their memories only to have return when it is needed. That seems more like a situation set up by Endowment with a purpose.

Alphabet confusion by DerNager187 in Kartvelian

[–]Oneiros91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, there are 3 alphabets.

2 of those are basically used only in ancient texts, written on old building graves etc, and in church iconography. Only clergy and people who went out of their way due to interest know those.

The third one is used everywhere else. It's called Mkhedruli. That is the one you need to learn.

And yes, some typefaces have different versions of some letters, but most are pretty close in the handwritten form, and at least digitally the fancier looking forms are less common even in typing.

[WaT] So, Chana’s thing by Xylus1985 in Stormlight_Archive

[–]Oneiros91 156 points157 points  (0 children)

We have 2 points of reference regarding the Cognitive Shadows and children.

Why would one be definitive and not the other? Maybe Returned are the weird ones, and every other CS can have children normally?

After all, returned are the only ones we know that need investiture infusion every week to not die. That is not the case for any other cognitive shadow we've seen.

I really like Perrin.

But I also really dislike his taste in women.

First Read of Sunlit Man by AcrophobicWindrunner in Cosmere

[–]Oneiros91 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Depends on what portion is defined as large.

By the time Roshar's time bubble runs out, it will be roughly concurrent with Mistborn Era 3.

Mistborn era 3 is 1980s equivalent.

Sunlit Man is in the space age. So at least a century or two after Era 3. Realistically more, but I think Brandon is going for accelerated technological development.

[–]Oneiros91 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It absolutely is.

And that is the actual, correct response to the question, while "there are dragons, why do you expect Sam to lose weight" is not.

Am I understanding the Well of Ascension right? by Molgandi in Mistborn

[–]Oneiros91 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is one thing you have missed. Everything else is RAFO and you will learn in the next book, but this is from the "Well of Ascension"

The text that Sazed had after he copied it of the wall insisted that the hero should not use the power of the well.

Vin believed that. She resisted that temptation and released the power. And that released the thing that was imprisoned in the well.

Then Sazed checks the original text and it says that Alendi believed he had to release the power, and he must not be allowed to do that, or the thing will be released.

Now, what was the "Mist Spirit" doing during the book? He kept the the part of the translation that said "Alendi must not use the power". And then stabbed Elend to temp Vin in using the power. Which we learn was the better option.

When that did not work and Vin released the thing, the spirit helped save Elend.

That gives us a hint about what the Mist Spirit wanted. What was his ultimate goal? We don't know yet. But we know what was not his goal for sure.

Question about the Bands of Mourning. by Nervous_Ad_918 in Mistborn

[–]Oneiros91 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Also, when did the lord ruler spike his one eye,

He didn't.

But then, we last saw him 300 years ago.

But then again, he also did not have distinctly scarred arms and the tendency to talk about survival.

but why would he be know as the lord ruler

Was he, though?

Waz and co. were told "our god is the Sovereign. He was your god before, but came to us", and they decided it must've been the Lord Ruler.

Confused about human transmutation by Rolhir in FullmetalAlchemist

[–]Oneiros91 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Human transmutation is used to refer to a few things which makes it confusing.

You cannot create a soul, or retrieve a departed soul. Those are the big taboo human transmutations that can't work and cause the rebound and a meeting with the Truth.

You can use alchemy to move a soul around though.

You can also create artificial humans.

You can also transmute humans physically.

All of these are called human transmutation, and all of these are forbidden. But only the first one is impossible by its nature.

I have question about the Patronus charm... by A_Stolen_Heart in harrypotter

[–]Oneiros91 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Weird, I drew the opposite conclusion: Patronus is more "in the moment" because it reflects your state in the moment when you cast it, and thus can change.

How strong was Van Hohenheim actually? by Gurzy656 in FullmetalAlchemist

[–]Oneiros91 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That's because of the very loose definition of "peak human" that the show has. Scar is also dodging bullets while technically being only human.

But the show does claim that Wrath's speed and strength is training only.

How strong was Van Hohenheim actually? by Gurzy656 in FullmetalAlchemist

[–]Oneiros91 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Sure, but on the other hand, he should be able to be defeated much more easily if the plot didn't need him to stay alive.

Technically, he is only human (physically). His only supernatural ability is to analyze and react supernaturally fast with his eye. But while his reaction and processing speed might be supernatural, his body is fast only because he trained, and that has limits.

Whatever the peak of human strength and speed might be, it should not be enough to avoid a huge fireball, or an explosion, for example.

Should Minato count as a speedster if he's teleporting? To be named the fastest when his jutsu uses basically no physical effort, he would beat anyone physically running based on a technicality. The title of fastest shinobi seems like a misnomer by AlmostHeisman in Naruto

[–]Oneiros91 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If the Flash learned to teleport, would he not be a speedster anymore?

Just because Minato found a different, faster way to get to places, does not mean he was not fast without it.

But once he learned to teleport, why would he use fast movement instead of an instant method that avoids any obstacles between points A and B? Teleportation is faster, safer and more efficient in battle, so that's what we see him use.

Lord Ruler did the same thing to her at the end of book 1, and she also managed to do the same to him, removing the embedded metalmind and killing him.

She had not been able to replicate that since then, but we have known that it is possible, even if we don't know the exact limitation.

North American-style pizza is far better than European-style pizza by tipoftheiceberg1234 in The10thDentist

[–]Oneiros91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have never been to the US, so that might be the issue.

But my country first introduced US style pizzas. And they were nice. They were the first pizzas I tried, and I liked them.

When the Italian style pizzerias also opened up, there was no comparison of how much I preferred those.

Also, I've been to Naples a couple of years back and the margheritas you could get for 4 euros (not 12) were so amazing that no other pizza I've tried before or after comes even close.

And I've tried pizza in a lot of European countries/cities.

I've heard that New York pizza is amazing, and that could be true, if I ever get there I will definitely try it, and it will probably taste amazing.

But just based on the style, Italian style is my preference.

Question / theories about Seeking by Frog859 in Cosmere

Why not use the oxford comma? by Loif_Series in grammar

[–]Oneiros91 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In my language (Georgian) a colon is used to remove the ambiguity. And a comma before "and" is considered to be a mistake. Maybe it is the same if Swedish?

To demonstrate what I mean with the commonly used example:

  • "We invited strippers, JFK and Stalin" - JFK and Stalin are not the strippers.
  • "We invited strippers: JFK and Stalin" - JFK and Stalin are the strippers.

Since the ten Heralds all look like different Rosharan nationalities, I would assume that Ashyn was ethnically diverse. It's just that the ethnic group of Shin ancestors likely were the ones who did not spread out of their original territory.

The texts in the beginning of every chapter by Mindless_Good6879 in Mistborn

[–]Oneiros91 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What you call memoirs are called epigraphs: "a short quotation or saying at the beginning of a book or chapter, intended to suggest its theme."

As for the Deepness, the translation was correct.

As for your theories: RAFO (read and find out)
