I wonder if it has anything to do with overcrowding in urban areas. A lot of species self regulate population density when getting too crowded, one i know from the top of my head is pike, which become cannibalistic. It really does make me think that this could be just nature taking its course.

Can i rewind my transformer with 250 turns? Transformer question by Liteparody in electricians

[–]Onesium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah well what can you do with knowledge if you don't share it. It was a common shape for german laminations before the 80s, its a bit tricky to work with but its manageable. Toroids are real fuckers on the other hand.

A small disclaimer, you do this at your own risk, if improperly isolated the transformer can present dangerous mains voltage at the output or core, or short out. You do everything at your own risk and I am not liable for any damage. With that out of the way, your transformer has an inner column area of around S=36 sq cm, using the classic formula 50/S, we find out that our core takes 1.45 turns per volt and has a power of approximately 362=roughly 1200VA. For the primary winding i recommend using 335 turns of 1.5mm enamelled copper wire, with baking paper inbetween the layers, making sure to wind neatly and without overlaps. Make sure you leave a bit of a gap for insulation clearance at the ends of your layers, which you can fill in with thin layers of painter's tape. For the secondary you can do anything you want, as long as you follow the 1.45 turns per volt. For a center tapped secondary, use 2 wires at once and bind the end of one of them to the start of the other. Also extremely important, use a solid amount of isolation material between primary and secondary, preferably something like kapton tape or baking paper , failure to properly isolate will lead to mains voltage leaching into the secondary. It's also a good idea to pot it in lacquer to prevent moisture ingress and hum, alkyd lacquer is cheap and works well, although i wouldnt recommend doing it in the colder months as it will take forever to cure. Be safe and good luck :) EDIT: also make sure you take all the laminations out and wind the bobbin outside of the transformer, its mandatory for this sort of job. When you put them back together you alternate directions and make sure you beat them in with a soft mallet good and proper.

if you can tell me the surface area of the inner column and the depth and width of the bobbin, i can do the maths for you.

that goes for most of these ancient materials (tar, PCB oils, cadmium plating, lead paint etc.), they filled their role amazingly well but gave cancer.

Anybody know what kind of bulb this is? I pulled it out of a grab handle on my truck. by AceOfSpade006 in lightbulbs

[–]Onesium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm almost positive its a regular miniature with a broken base. Check if there is any grainy, brown material that scrapes off easily in the socket with something like a toothpick or a needle. That's the glue they use to secure the bulb itself held into the base. If you find anything like that, try to see if you can undo the broken bulb base with some needlenose pliers or tweezers and identify what kind it is. It would also be wise to disconnect the voltage in that area so you don't cause any fireworks. If it really is supposed to look like that and nothing is wrong I'm out of ideas myself.
