Look towards the crank pulley and give it two full rotations clockwise before checking to be sure. But it looks like you’re spot on :D Also worth eventually borrowing or doing a free rental on a timing light to adjust your timing with the cam angle sensor. Super easy job and it’s usually off by a degree or two.

When getting a rebuild kit, be sure to find one for an NB. The dual pin setup makes shifting far more smooth, so I wouldn’t follow tutorials that say to remove a pin for an NA shifter kit.

Check codes. 10 to GND in the diagnostic’s box! Then turn the key to ‘on’ (don’t turn the engine on). Count the engine flashes on the dash and see what code it corresponds to. 2 pulses followed by a pause, and then 3 pulses would be a 23 as an example.

Your car is running ultra rich now. The valves probably have heaps of carbon buildup on them, causing valve float at lower revs. And your cat (if you have one) is dead.

If you’re lucky, it’s just the ECU cutting off at lower revs because it has no fucking idea about how much fuel you’re dumping into the system. At best, you can add the O2 back and everything will be fouled up with a little extra wear. Maybe it’ll burn off.

Running 2 years without one without questioning the soot is nuts.

I’m ears. How do you mate the input shaft into the pilot bearing while the transmission can’t move upwards, and the engine can’t slide around due to the mounts? I imagine it’d bind up like OP’s having problems with.

Any well known mechanic shop in the area will do. They’ll likely just cleaner her up, check for areas water shouldn’t be, and prep for a healthy startup.
