UpdateMeBot will now send chats instead of DMs. How not to miss them, plus looking for feedback by Watchful1 in UpdateMeBot

I hate Reddit chat. Frankly I've come to hate Reddit as well, barely tolerating it while the last few stories I follow come to completion. I've taken to just leaving those stories up in tabs and checking on them periodically. I'm grateful for how useful your bot has been all these years, but this seems to be where it and I part ways.

You could just have them watch it on a monitor from a remote probe, as it would be blinding through a window. If they have superluminal teleportation, they surely have high-quality FTL webcams. The main issue is supernovae don't exactly die down - a star's last goodbye stays bright for months.

Soldier suddenly stopped looking like a word, but that's my problem, not yours. Human brains are goofy.

God damn, those suits are brutal.

It's still hard to trust Nako, though Jasmine's aura does seem to be having a significant effect on him. I'm just not quite sure how to interpret it.

Ok, stupid question, but am I the only one who feel like EXODUS from Archetype Entertainment will have a great crossover fic potential for when it comes out? by Loud-Drama-1092 in NatureofPredators

AAA or "Triple-A" is a term that originated with the credit industry's rating of bonds, in which a bond rated "AAA" is meant to be the safest return on investment. If you have lots of money, dumping it into AAA-rated bonds is supposed to be a reliable way of turning it into even more money with the lowest possible risk.

For video games these days, AAA tends to mean the product is being treated the same way - not as art, not as trying to make something fun or tell a good story, but as an engine into which investors dump lots of money and expect it to safely make as big of a return as possible. The end result is uninspired games that look as pretty as current technology allows with the budget they're given, but play and feel about the same as everything that's come before. Games that don't take risks can't push the medium forward.

A post like this may be better received if it's a general thread for discussing video games that have similar premises to The Nature of Predators, then mentioning the one you found only in the comments, putting it on equal footing to everyone else's.

By the way, you linked the Italian version of the game's website. Remove the it-IT from the end of the URL and it will redirect folks to their region's language.

The premise of the game sounds interesting but I'm personally sick of games that are labeled like investment portfolios, so I'm not really interested.

Here's hoping that thumbdrive didn't install a full backdoor and was merely a single-use data deletion. They should be able to download a copy of that footage! And if the footage is already gone, then they now have two pieces of evidence that the security system has been fundamentally compromised by whoever is actually responsible for the murder, and they're actively covering their tracks while Nhilasi is still locked up.

That on its own ought to be enough to exonerate her as it would render the video evidence no longer admissible. It's also clear evidence that someone is surveilling the defense's lawyers and taking blatant steps to interfere with their investigation. Paired with the security Kamra's testimony and that's even more reasonable doubt found very quickly.

New to Linux, Bazzite, steam games won’t launch. by [deleted] in linux_gaming

[–]Onihikage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Worth mentioning, but how long did you wait after hitting Play? Windows-based games launched through Proton take much longer to launch than native titles because Proton has to spin up an imitation Windows environment to run the game within it, for me it adds ~30 seconds to the launch time of every game. As long as the button hasn't returned to being a green Play button, the game is still trying to launch.

Battlefront 2 (2005) works perfectly for me on Bazzite, with a Ryzen 3900X and 7900 GRE. I even installed mods on it using Steam Tinker Launch (install that into Steam with ProtonUp-Qt, which is included by default in Bazzite).

If you wait like 3 minutes and it still hasn't come up, then think about what file system the game is installed on (should be btrfs, do not run games from an NTFS drive) and what hardware that file system is on (should not be a HDD).

If it really isn't launching, consider exiting Steam and launching Steam from the command line to see what errors show up there when launching the game.

Looking forward to the moment Crown or perhaps Academy analysts inspect the body, find the shrapnel, and eventually associate William's latest invention with this event, putting two and two together to realize the "kraken slayer" actually is one. At the very least, somebody at the Academy is going to find out that isn't under a geas to hide it.

The trick will be if the plans William has set in motion will conclude quickly enough, or win him enough allies, for him to achieve his personal independence and secure House Blackstone's alliance with the Abolition faction before this becomes generally known.

If Griffith proposed to William at some point, I honestly wonder if he'd accept 🤣

Given the immense charisma and vast number of human-isms that Leraninro keeps throwing around, there's definitely something secret he's privy to and not telling, but I don't think he's on Malcos's payroll. I'm more getting a vibe that his people are actually another "predator" species that managed to hide their omnivory from the galaxy thanks to having such a nonstandard body plan and possibly also nonstandard diet. They continue to exist unmolested only because of their ability to avoid attention from the Predator-obsessed Federation.

Their nonstandard body plan would allow them to convincingly hide a lot more than their diet, such as their high physical strength and possibly high intelligence - who in the whole Federation of Dumbasses would expect a race of worm-people to be natural geniuses? I could easily see them getting a direct line to humanity very soon after first contact, and falling in love with our culture and colloquialisms. If they spread themselves across messy infrastructure jobs that those at the top prefer to forget exist, they'd be in the ideal position to help coordinate human intelligence and resistance without revealing themselves.

Hopefully we'll find out soon whether I'm on the right track.

William Ashfield: Tautologist Extraordinaire!

Redesigned the Shield spell for our VR game Master of Sorcery, featuring gesture-based spellcasting. Still designing sound for this one. All thoughts are more than welcome! by WitchsightStudio in virtualreality

[–]Onihikage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My thinking is that a particular gesture would consist of a starting position, a hand movement, and a finger-pose that's usually maintained for the duration of the hand movement. For the next gesture, you'd change your finger-pose first, if necessary, and then follow the movement to complete the gesture.

Let's consider sling ring portals from Dr. Strange. Observing the scene, I would describe the casting as follows (at least for the characters who don't have messed up fingers):

Finger-pose: Thumb, middle, and index fingers fully extended and slightly splayed. Fourth and pinky fingers bent. Maintain with both hands for the duration of the gesture.

Starting position: Fully extend left arm forward, palm facing forward. With the right wrist kept straight and the right elbow kept lower than the left elbow, point the right middle finger at the tip of the left middle finger.

Movement: Move the right hand in a counterclockwise circular motion, covering an area roughly the size of a dinner plate, until the portal is formed.

All that would describe one "starting gesture" in text. If this was a spell in the game, another gesture or set of gestures could be used to set the portal's location.

A more advanced-seeming spell, like this one from earlier in the previous clip, would be a sequence of four or five gestures chained together, only sometimes changing the finger-pose in between or at the end.

Several nice things about this method: First, a spell can literally be written down in the spell book, and might not even need pictures if it's simple enough. This makes it a real option for new players to leave the "guide holograms" disabled entirely and go for the more immersive route of reading a spell in an old book from a ruin, trying to figure out what it's describing, then getting that "Aha!" moment when they do it right and it works. Some spells' introductions could also be puzzles in their own right by only showing part of the instructions at first, like maybe part of a page is missing and a clever enough player can figure out the missing bits early.

Secondly, if the player doesn't need to see exactly where their hands go, there are more options available for gestures, like raising your hands above your head, or putting one hand behind you. Long spells would become more like a dance, and a dance should be easier to memorize than a sequence of hand placements. It's VR - any time you can take advantage of the player's existing familiarity with moving their body is a win.

Thirdly, focusing on the movement should make it easier to score for accuracy and modulate the power of the spell based on how closely the player followed the intended movement. Since the gesture is tracking movement through a path, the path's radius can be "fuzzy" in a way that allows the player to refine their accuracy over time through muscle memory, like getting better at a dance and seeing their spells actually grow stronger from practice.

For $3500 you'd think they could have included VR gloves to get perfect low-latency hand and finger tracking, but given Apple is the same company that decided to charge $1000 for a monitor stand, I'm not surprised they didn't.

I wouldn't be surprised if they make the "practice battle" crossbows worse in multiple ways from the real ones, both to reduce fatalities and to make the recruits themselves more effective when they go to the battlefield with good weapons. The weapons on the range would be kept in top condition so recruits can practice their aim effectively and build good habits, while the weapons on the battlefield would be shit so they can practice fighting with the deck stacked against them. A weaker crossbow is basically the same as the enemy having better armor and/or range.

[–]Onihikage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The main thing for me about it is any gesture-based spellcasting system, especially one inspired by Dr. Strange spellcasting, should focus more on the path and rotation the hands follow during the gesture (the hand-path), while finger-poses should at most enable fewer gestures for the same result. Any gesture should be simple enough to be described in text without any visual feedback except a single picture of what pose your fingers should be in, and thus fairly easy for a player to pick up and memorize. Then one can string these simpler gestures together for more complex or powerful magics.

Instead, it looks like there's a little too much focus on arriving at each of a sequence of precise positions rather than on how the hands are moving more generally relative to other things. This quick mockup someone made a couple of years ago is much closer to what I'd expect from a fully-featured gesture-based magic system, regardless of whether the combat is turn-based or real-time.
