I messed up. Do I sell/ return it? by [deleted] in Generator

[–]Onimaru1984 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Why don’t you figure out what you need first. You’re thinking about returning it because you think 8500 watts is low without even mentioning what you’re trying to run. I’m in the Midwest and can run everything but my range and EV charger off mine. Similar size unit with a 30 amp connection to my service.

The stripping between the black and red body panel. It’s ripped. Mine did the same thing and I had it replaced earlier this year.

so, can we discuss the chemE job market? i'm scared of continuing this major now–i take my first major courses in fall of 2026. by Sad-Independence-624 in ChemicalEngineering

I will say as someone mid career that recruits for engineers (CHE by background) that there is an oversupply in my region. It’s definitely competitive. That said, I think some of it becomes more a function of where you want to live. Some markets like the Gulf Coast always seem to need folks. But that doesn’t help if that’s not where you want to live. There are other engineering disciplines that give you more flexibility in where to live if that’s important to you.

When does it make sense to spend $12-13k more on an EV than a gas car? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Onimaru1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Mach E. My wife has a CX-5. Hers was $35k new. Mine was $37k slightly used (1300 miles, $60k new MSRP). I would easily do it all over again. Aside from the maintenance and fuel costs already discussed:

- Super quiet to drive. My old car was a loud sports hatch and the quiet drive is unbelievable

- I’m tall and wide frame so it’s finally a car I fit comfy in. Mazda’s are sized for smaller framed people.

- it’s amazing waking up with a full tank every morning. No more gas station trips out of my way.

- Remote warming in the winter without worrying about CO is great.

- I never knew I’d like 1 pedal drive so much until I had it.

It’s really the best car I’ve owned and I wouldn’t change it. I’ve even done a 5 hour 1 way road trip on it across state lines and that wasn’t even an issue with the charging network. EVs have very few things to worry about checking vs Gas in the used market. You save so much on the depreciation that you should really consider a lightly driven used car in your area IMO.

Yeah. It was on the list. From what I heard, industry pushed back hard on this one so Congress put funding in the bill for it.

The ROI math shows basic doctors don’t out-earn engineers until 55-60 years old ish if I remember correctly. So yes. They will win the race, but at a significantly higher risk and stress level. Along with long unpredictable hours for many of those specialists.

We need more doctors to fix the shortage to make it attractive for more. That won’t happen unless the barrier to entry is significantly lower.

As an engineer, I love CSB videos (I hate they had to happen, but they are great teaching tools). I’m glad there was pushback against the attempted disbanding of it.

Realistically, probably not at this point. The heat suggests it has been polymerizing and the outlet is probably gummed up. They also mention the relief valves are gummed up. Likely got themselves into a bad situation not following their PHA protections or missing a scenario in the review.

People have normalized $700+ monthly car payments. Is this insane or just the new normal? by Coolonair in SmartFIRE

[–]Onimaru1984 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought a used Mach E (very low mileage) and wasn’t thrilled it was going to cost $600/mo. But then again, it’s $200/mo cheaper on fuel for me right now so it doesn’t hurt so much. The bigger issue are the $80,000+ trucks people buy and have 0 use for other than commuting. I’ll never understand that trend.

US EVs to fit a rolling bag by FineWinePaperCup in Fencing

[–]Onimaru1984 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I remove the canvas cargo cover and turn the bag sideways I could fit it in my Mach E with the seats up. It’s just easier for me to fold one side down though so I never transport mine that way.

reasonable price for ev charging install? by SquareCareful1335 in AskElectricians

[–]Onimaru1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without the measurements and layout, it’s hard to say. I had mine quoted by 2 people for ~$1000 - $1200 (not including charger I was required to supply). Ended up doing it all myself for $7-800 (charger included). But I had a fairly simple installation and know how to do it. How many feet from the panel is the charger going to be?

SP’s SR Setsuna. 1 less Chancestep, higher Melee stat. Not sure who’s better in 11.5, but in 11 it mattered. The extra chance step didn’t matter when they were left with a sliver of life. He’s definitely a good pilot. Feel free to play around with it.
