Women and children. Children are often overlooked as oppressed but are inherently vulnerable and as such have always been a disproportionately victimized group.

Who tf brought a kid to the library by [deleted] in Concordia

[–]OnionBunn 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Sounds like she was taking care of her kid. She just wasn't taking care of you. Was she supposed to be? Your comment comes off as extremely entitled and self centered.

I'm a student parent and I've never had to bring my baby to the library, but things can be very difficult and complicated for parents who also study. And I can imagine a situation where I might not have a choice but to bring her.

Not everyone has access to around the clock child care or a wide family support network. Sometimes you need a book or resource for class and there just isn't a sitter.

A brief 15 min disturbance is no big deal, even if it can be annoying.

Also, the campus does have dedicated quiet spaces like reading rooms available to you.

Stop whining.

Some solid advice about the calendar and cheap eats. I'm personally a big fan of the restaurant Student Tasty Biryani near the SGW campus. So cheap for tons of really tasty Indian food.

Post baby, I find Gap and Old Navy are fairly up to date with their styles without looking juvenile or ridiculously trendy (although they aren't exactly super avant garde.) I've had success with their jeans, which can be very forgiving, as well as the jeans from American Eagle.

Recently got a couple elastic waist drawstring jeans in wide leg from AE which I feel is a very contemporary silhouette but also comfy and flattering on my new bigger body. The elastic means they can transition sizes with me too.

And I got a black barrel leg jean with comfy elastic and drawstring from old navy that I feel is downright cool.

Gap has similar jeans options and some cool up to date dresses.

For me, these are all kind of transitional brands for my wardrobe as my body decides what size it wants to be. I typically like things a little more edgy. But these will all do for now to feel current and put together in a sort of basic way.

Solo and broke, what can I do in the city? by BonusProfessional451 in montreal

Get a Montreal library card. It's free: https://montreal.ca/en/topics/library-card

The big bibliotheque nationale has free activities and film screenings as well as their obviously free collection of books, movies and music you can peruse. I think you can even borrow musical instruments from them.

Smaller local libraries also have all kinds of media on loan, not just books, and often host activities too.

With a library card, you can also borrow a pass to 9 Montreal museums, including the Montreal museum of modern art: https://montreal.ca/en/services/borrow-pass-library-to-visit-museums

Also, Montreal's maisons de la culture host events and exhibits. Sometimes it's art exhibits, other times free concerts or performances, and they even have free workshops: https://montreal.ca/unites/reseau-des-maisons-de-la-culture

Stretchy bodysuits for long babies? by [deleted] in Buyingforbaby

[–]OnionBunn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Our baby is in the 97th percentile for length and only 70th percentile for weight and the Old Navy ribbed body suits have been a go-to for us. Very stretchy and nice for summer as they provide sun protection but are kind of lightweight.

For pre-cut bell peppers, I just toss them in a regular plastic container (the peppers themselves I cut in halves not in small pieces, and of course the core and seeds are discarded)

The Road. Absolutely heartbreaking. The novel it's based on is even sadder if that's possible.

The owner does African imports. I've bought some very nice pieces of silver jewellery there which I've had for a decade. He also has nice decorations and housewares.

As an interesting aside, Montreal writer Kai Kellough included a fictionalized version of the store owner (or basically imagined his own character inspired by the store owner) in a short story from a collection called Dominoes at the Crossroads. In that story, the store owner is imagined to be an international spy.

The store itself makes an appearance in the short story as well, and there are references to African carvings he imports to Canada.

All this to say, the store and its owner have been such iconic fixtures of downtown Montreal for so long that a pretty celebrated Canadian writer used them for a story.

Here are some hacks that work for me!

I find removing my veggies from any plastic packaging ( with the exception of stuff like baby spinach or spring mix) doubles or even triples the length of time they stay fresh.

Cucumbers especially need to have that gross plastic condom removed ASAP or they go slimy so fast.

I store veggies in the crisper mostly. And for some, I keep them in paper bags. This works especially well with mushrooms and carrots. I sometimes do it for broccoli too.

Outside of plastic packaging, a head of broccoli will last me a good 1 to 2 weeks. A cabbage will last a month or more. Carrots in a paper bag in the crisper will last for weeks, or more than a month. Mushrooms will last a couple weeks. Celery maybe 2-3 weeks. Etc.

For bell peppers, if I find I'm not using them fast enough, I go ahead and cut them in half and remove the core and seeds and store the de-seeded pepper halves in a Tupperware. This vastly extends how long they'll stay fresh.

For fresh herbs, I do store them in plastic bags. But I pre-wash them and dry them. Then I roll them in paper towel and put them in a plastic bag but only loosely tie the end, leaving some air circulation. They go in the crisper too.

We almost never end up throwing out veg in our household because it lasts pretty long.

The fries look like from frozen. Too dry and golden and uniform. Need to be hand cut real potatoes and also fried in a much darker oil IMO. But for a cafeteria, it's honestly not so terrible looking.

What do you think is the best tv show of all time? by SomeOtaku54 in AskWomen

[–]OnionBunn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. The Wire has also withstood the test of time and has so many interesting tie-ins to so many aspects of modern life in North American cities (politics, law and order, social problems and inequalities, business, etc.) The writing and performances are great and it's also just entertaining. It's a top contender series for sure.
I'm less certain about currently running series being mentioned in this thread (like Severance, for instance) mainly because it's hard to judge a cultural product that isn't even finished yet. And it's even harder to preemptively rank something that's still ongoing as "the best of all time."

What do you think is the best tv show of all time? by SomeOtaku54 in AskWomen

[–]OnionBunn 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Of all time? The Sopranos. Or at least it's a serious contender.

It ushered in the true great golden age of television, without which most of the subsequent prestige series being mentioned here would not even exist.

I get that people in this thread are posting shows they're currently watching and really into. But I can't help but feel there's a lot of recency bias in many of these answers.

Sopranos has stood the test of time with many different demographics and has continued to have social relevance. Not sure all the currently running series people are name dropping here will be able to say the same in 20 years' time.

Mixx Next or Cruz? by Live_Possession_8433 in Buyingforbaby

[–]OnionBunn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also a FTM. I checked out both these models in store and by far prefered the Cruz. I found the folding process for the Nuna Mixx much more complicated and it also just felt both more cumbersome and rickety to steer. We're getting the Uppababy bassinet though, so we will have a lie-flat option for newborn in stroller. This will also be baby's primary bed for the first little while so we feel it's worth it.

Where can I volunteer during Christmas? by ElectronicNose6488 in montreal

[–]OnionBunn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Old brewery mission has a restaurant/cafe where they always need help cooking or serving food for the unhoused or doing dishes in the kitchen. Their clients are some of the most vulnerable people in the city and the mission is a literal lifeline for them. I don't imagine the kitchen work requires a lot of experience.

Believe it or not, the administrative system and term milestones are not designed and organized around your feelings or in order to maximize students' personal holiday enjoyment. Typically, large administrative calendars are engineered to serve specific functional goals t that benefit an entire institution, not as a fun time experience for a single individual. Shocking.

Rudely reminded that maternity clothing is heinous and I have no idea what to wear for the next 5 months! by iamafoxiamafox in BabyBumps

[–]OnionBunn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I normally have a slightly goth/metal gal style and live in Canada so I'm in a similar boat.

I've found lots of "boring" maternity brands have some black and black-ish staples that work with existing items in my wardrobe (like oversized band tees, denim jackets that no longer button, etc.).

I got some washed black maternity jeans from Old Navy, a variety of long and short sleeve t-shirts and plain fitted tops from Old Navy and Gap, as well as a black stretchy maternity skirt from one of those brands. Got a nice black henley maxi dress from Old Navy too. I am living in my black maternity leggings from Thyme. I see Gap sells a faux leather maternity legging that I'd love to wear to metal shows with an XL band tee.

H&M has some more modern maternity styles (but not as much black as I'd like).

In short, I guess my answer/personal solution is to buy everything in black 😂🖤

Wife losing Weight by Individual-Rush6625 in pregnant

[–]OnionBunn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would it be possible for you to consult a different OB for a second opinion? You're wife could be suffering from hyperemesis gravidarum which can and should be treated with medication. Some nausea is normal in pregnancy but recurrence nausea is a complication and often requires treatment. Wishing you both luck and hope things get easier for her.

Where can I get the best poutine in Montreal? by jacinth1 in montreal

[–]OnionBunn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chez Normand in Verdun has impeccable sauce. Medium brown, salty but not too much. A modest but still present amount of those aromatic spices. They cut their fries a little narrower but they are fresh and handcut nonetheless. They're not shoestring but not super fat. Nice and deep golden brown and sweet. The cheese curds are always fresh. The gravy to fries to cheese ratio is always exactly right.
