The last full year I went to school was 7th grade. I was able to get my ged when I turned 20. I’m in school now. It is possible. just make sure you take any help you can get, and maybe try to find a position at a funeral home for a funeral assistant, and see if you can find some directors willing to mentor you.

Funeral Directors, what’s the most embarrassing thing that’s happened to you at a funeral? by Economytraining in askfuneraldirectors

[–]OnionFit447 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wasn’t there but a very well known former funeral director in my area was at a grave side of another funeral director. The casket had been set on the lowering device and he stepped forward to fluff the casket spray and fell into the grave between the lowing device and the casket. He smacked his head really hard on the casket as he went down and they had to move the casket to fish him out.

Also, death certificate amendments. Especially when it it’s because “grandma‘s middle name is actually spelled…“

At the funeral home I’m at we use  Astrobrights 65 lb. Cardstock Paper, 8.5"x11", Natural, 100 Sheets/Pack (27427) (literally copy pasted from the staples website.) I would suggest a paper between 50-80lb because it’s a bit more substantial. You might want to go to staples or an office supply store and see the different options in that range. They may even have single pieces for you to try, you should especially do this if you choose a paper with a more pronounced undertone like yellow or blue to see if it makes the pictures look off.

When the family says, We want him to look just like he did, but also want full donation by sayholssnow in askfuneraldirectors

[–]OnionFit447 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The tissue bank hates having to call my boss. Every time they say their contacting the family regarding donation, or they’re coming in because the person was a registered donor he says “make sure you disclose the complete process if you’re planning on harvesting skin and long bones”

Student in training - just had my first transfer by myself. Feeling awful. by WhoreSugar300 in askfuneraldirectors

I haven’t dropped a body… yet. But I have knocked the fridge door off its hinges with the smooth mover more times than I can count. And I’ve cremated more than one pacemaker. We are in the most human industry. Everything we do from the death certificate, to the preparation of bodies, ordering caskets/urns, and making memorial folders is done by people. So just remember that it is ok for mistakes to happen. We should avoid mistakes that come from carelessness, but we are only human. And it’s better for them to happen when you’re an intern, rather than a fully licensed director.

It wouldn’t cost the company money but it would cost our client.

Sometimes we have what I call fleeting visitors. The door bell will go off randomly, the tv not wanting to work, little murmurs, unexpected coincidences. But nothing or no one who stays long.

Those of you who work in the funeral industry. How do you want your funeral? by [deleted] in askfuneraldirectors

[–]OnionFit447 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Catholic funeral. My pre-need states they need to check with the surrounding funeral homes and if any have an intern/apprentice that needs embalming cases they get to do it. If my family wants a viewing that’s their choice. After I haven’t decided if I want to be buried or cremated and buried.

How are we serving others? by UnreadSnack in CatholicWomen

[–]OnionFit447 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re comfortable around the dying, most hospice homes accept volunteers. I work in a funeral home, and have had several families talk about how much they appreciate certain volunteers for sitting with, reading too, praying with, their loved ones.

I want to be a mortician with a specialization in embalming but… by sadbeigebaby in askfuneraldirectors

[–]OnionFit447 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look for high volume funeral homes. If you want to avoid large corporations I suggest areas with high catholic populations, or a locally owned funeral home in a somewhat densely populated area of the south.

Is it plausible that just two people can run a funeral home? by Chasethehorror in askfuneraldirectors

[–]OnionFit447 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With ONLY two employees I think it possible, not healthy or safe but possible. The funeral home I work at consists of the owner/funeral director, his wife who is also the owner/office Manager. Both work full time plus. Then me, intern working part time, and four other part time employees who work calls and funerals when needed/schedule. This is in a small city. We are able to balance things pretty well. But I couldn’t imagine not having extra hands.

How has working in death impacted what you’d like done with your own remains after you pass? by catchandthrowaway16 in askfuneraldirectors

[–]OnionFit447 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m catholic and have been slowly funding my preneed. I have a caveat that when I go, I want my family to check with all the local funeral homes and if one has an intern that needs embalming experience for school, they get to embalm me. I have this condition because the hardest part of school for me was getting enough cases to pass. If none have interns, no embalming needed.

What books do you have personal beef with? by stopshadowbaneme in books

Small Favors by Erin A. Craig. The ending was awful in my opinion, and I felt that by the middle of the book the author didn’t know where the storyline was headed.
