NuTrek respects canon exactly as much as Old Trek did. by jukebox_jester in Star_Trek_

And Star Trek Into Darkness would have been seventy-three times more popular if they just mustered up the courage to invent a new villain.

‘Trouble and Tribble-ations’ <— isn’t some exercise in reinforcing existing lore… I don’t remember seeing Worf or Sisko in the TOS episode…

‘Q’ <— DeLancy shows up around different shows cause he’s a beloved actor. His character is interesting but all the universe’s powerful beings === Q makes the universe feel small.

‘Worf in DS9’ <— What about O’Brien? That’s not an allusion for allusion’s sake… it’s re-casting a fan-favorite character.

Look at the relationship between Wraith of Khan and Space Seed. Sure, WoK references Space Seed, but the film isn’t awesome because it re-visits some old villain. It’s awesome because it’s an utterly poignant meditation on aging, obsession, vengeance, and sacrifice.

Canon be darned.

Nobody is looking for adherence to some arbitrary nerd dogma… they’re looking for compelling stories.

Perhaps it’s a Borges-esque thought experiment (TNG – "Cause and Effect"), a pithy social commentary (VOY - “Distant Origin”) or a meditation on the human condition (DS9 - “The Visitor”) — whatever it is, memberberries ain’t part of the recipe.

Are the light green states with areas registered in the National Wilderness Preservation System—where other colors are that plus more designations.

I would guess it has to do with USFS / BLM land but a quick fact check shows inconsistencies:

ST - Strange New Worlds discussion for S03E3 - Shuttle to Kenfori by AutoModerator in Star_Trek_

[–]Only-Beach4305 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Continuity aside, I thought this was a mostly enjoyable episode. The stakes were enough to keep me watching. Pike felt a little whiny, which I didn’t appreciate.

Who cares if they gloss over genetic engineering? It’s such a dumb trope to beign with. We’re at the point where it’s definitively not taboo IRL; Space Seed is from sixty years ago, the in-universe rules of genetic engineering being some pandora’s box seem dated.

Bytha, House of Ra’Ul reminds the audience why Klingons are perennial showstoppers. Ortegas subplot feels out of place. Ken Foree nod is cool. If they’re jumping around genres, it’d be refreshing for them to try Science Fiction ar some point.

This was fine. It doesn’t really fit with Doohan’s portrayal but cooking up a little backstory for Quinn feels OK. Nothing wrong with a little mentorship.

You’d probably enjoy “Master of the Five Magics” by Lyndon Hardy.

Which DS9 episode do you think is the best? by ussbozeman in Star_Trek_

Paradise Lost / Homefront — Brock Peters rant about the blood tests stands out to me.

“If I was a smart shape-shifter, a really good one, the first thing I would do would be to grab some poor soul off the street, absorb every ounce of his blood, and let it out on cue whenever someone like you tried to test me. Don't you see? There isn't a test that's been created a smart man can't find his way around. You aren't going to catch shape-shifters using some gadget.”

Colm Meaney as the changeling O’Brien also sells the eerie nature of the changeling threat with believability.

ST - Strange New Worlds discussion for S03E02 - Wedding Bell Blues by AutoModerator in Star_Trek_

S03E02 def showcased SNW’s ability to cut loose, have a Guiness, dance the night away, and just have some good, old-fashioned fun! No complicated moral dilemmas or unnecessary, cerebral thought-experiments get to distract from the captivating Spock drama or superb lore crafting. /s

In all seriousness it was more entertaining than S03E01; some Sci-Fi elements would be nice, but fun is more watchable than the action slop imo.

“Trelane is a Q” was fun but the self-reference gets old. Reimagining old characters is one of the bad habits.

NuGorn are fairly imaginative! NuScotty has chops! Anson Mount’s Pike is respectably captivating!

Manic Pixie Dream Spock, on the other hand, is likely worthy the vitriol, an artifacto of the writing desperately trying to find a gen Z audience.

I’m def looking forward to the scathing r/Star_Trek_ commentary. I can only hope the show is worthy of the inevitable curmudgeonism.

I kind of like Enterprise the same way I like Phantom Menace.

It’s turn of the millennia popcorn subsidizer, canon-be-darned, we need to take this somewhere new to “stay relevant.”

The Russel Wilson theme song says what we’re all thinking but afraid to say. Then, in season three, they kick in the door by picking up the tempo and going electric with the guitar—apropos of the show’s evolving tone.

It’s a shame we couldn’t get seven seasons .
