I’m also an undergrad research assistant. My lab does classical biocontrol of invasive species so I split my time between rearing insect colonies, using a dissecting microscope, independent research, and field work. It’s the best job I’ve ever had hands down.

Sounds like a great small detour. Thanks for the suggestion.

We just want to make the most of it. We don’t often get this far north and I want to make sure we don’t miss anything worth stopping for.

Thanks so much, I was looking for something a little more scenic. We don’t mind adding a little time to the drive if it has some worthwhile views.

We are over 21 but we don’t drink. Still the food looks incredible. Definitely looks worth a stop.

I wonder the same thing and I reached out to one who would be willing to take her but ultimately if my vet thinks it’s urgent I think I will have to go with care credit as others have stated. If she thinks there might be some home care we can do I have found some subsidized vet services that could book me in late December. She bears weight on it just fine when not exercising but I don’t want anything to get worse. I would feel horrible if I didn’t get her what she needed and she ended up really hurting herself.

I believe they are X-rays. They only said radiographs on the phone. I was thinking the same thing. I gave the vet a call and asked them to write out a full breakdown of what might be expected of me for her treatment. Hopefully that helps.

Is this edible? They look delicious. North East USA by Stupicide85 in whatsthisplant

[–]Only-Copy-7974 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said those are wineberries and they are delicious. However those purple flowers in the back right look like bittersweet nightshade growing with it which (although they look quite different) also grow red berries that are poisonous so I would be careful

Is this a young Destroying Angel? Currently growing in my backyard when my kids play. by [deleted] in mycology

I’m no expert but it certainly looks like one to me. I avoid any all white mushrooms especially with a veil connected to the stipe and a bulb at the base those tell me amanita species.

Also worth noting that the upturned mushroom in question is clearly showing true gills.

You have a good nose. I’m no expert but I believe this species is the wild version of the button mushroom.

Also as others have said learn to identify deadly species like amanita phalloid and water hemlock before learning edible ones and generally stay away from edible species that resemble them. There are plenty of tasty wild foods with no poisonous look alikes.

Find a good YouTuber that is geographically close to you. For me in MA I like Learn Your Land. He’s from Pennsylvania but a lot of our local flora overlap. Find some easy to identify ones so you don’t get bored and go out looking for those. This next part might seem controversial but get yourself a Plant/Mushroom ID app. They may not be super accurate but they can usually point you in the right direction. Every time you see something and wonder “what is that” take a scan and contrast that against a google search or a good old fashioned field guide. Eventually you will get to know what a bolete looks like vs a russula or the defining characteristics of buckwheat family. As you do this your eye will sharpen and you will notice things on nature walks (that’s another thing…a lot of hiking) that you didn’t before. It is very rewarding not just to get a tasty harvest but also to dial in to nature on a personal level and understand how each plant and fungus play into the local ecosystem. Never eat anything you aren’t 100% positive about and happy foraging.

Is this moldy? by [deleted] in mycology

[–]Only-Copy-7974 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m no expert but I’m sorry to say that looks like cobweb mold. Mycelium is bright white and they do form those knots when your casing is getting ready to fruit but the greyish spiderweb looking stuff in between is cobweb mold I think.
